With many parts of Canada experimenting with daylight time in the winter for the first time, it's important to consider how this might affect people. Here's a new article we've just written exploring possible impacts on schools in Canada. theconversation.com/how-permanen...

Apropos of nothing, I have been reading about St Martin of Tours. This is the impressive list of things if which he is patron saint of: Against poverty; against alcoholism; Baħrija, Malta; beggars; Beli Manastir; Archdiocese of Bratislava; Buenos Aires; Burgenland; cavalry;

Church Lads' and Church Girls' Brigade; Dieburg; Edingen equestrians; Erfurt;Foiano della Chiana; France; geese; horses; hotel-keepers; innkeepers; Kortrijk; Mainz; Montemagno; Olpe; Ourense; Pietrasanta; Pontifical Swiss Guards; quartermasters; reformed alcoholics; riders; Villadoz; Torre di Mosto

Taal, Batangas; Touraine;[1] Bocaue, Bulacan; Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart; soldiers; tailors; Utrecht; vintners; Virje; wine growers; wine makers; Wissmannsdorf

I find myself thinking of Malcolm quite a bit, not just as a colleague scientist but as a re-assuring, common sense but erudite presence here; it was always nice to know he was out there in the world.

Giving a talk being critical of social media when this guy walks in after being flown over by Meta; I rapidly change my conclusions.

Well look, the minister is going to commission a report to go alongside of all of those other reports that confirm this and then do nothing until it is time to commission another report.

Universities are to tell an Oireachtas committee that they are at capacity and teetering on a cliff-edge unless the Government addresses a funding gap in higher education.

Recruitment/promotions freeze - staff leave to go elsewhere where advancement is reasonably possible - hire agency staff to plug holes - why are we spending so much on agency staff. Geniuses.

Yes, yes, but are they Executive Pro-Vice Chancellors or just regular Pro-Vice Chancellors?

Massive job cuts at the University of Nottingham in response to a financial crisis caused by Senior Management, yet there's still money for three new Pro-Vice-Chancellor positions... www.timeshighereducation.com/unijobs/list...

Apart from the specific issues involved, fuck all the Toucher O’Callaghans and other gobshites trying to import US culture-wars bullshit politics here.

Apart from the ridiculousness of this, a senior Garda calling for more gillet jaune is pretty funny.

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Assistant Garda Commissioner Denis Ferry said "all pedestrians" including in urban areas should wear high visibility clothing. "I think you should do everything you can to ensure you're visible," he said. www.thejournal.ie/driving-phon...

Trying to figure out a walking route home that minimises my chance of being hit by a car going straight through a well-turned red light (pretty much every day now). I don’t know, peoples’ brains seem to have turned to mush so they forget they are driving a ton or more of metal and glass.

As Mitt Romney is in the news, I am thinking of his father George's line that he was "brainwashed" by the generals into supporting the Vietnam war, a comment which elicited the wonderfully bitchy response from Eugene McCarthy that a "light rinse would have been sufficient".

Still there, getting ready for the winter storms, research excellence in action.

Andrew Coogan@cooganlab.bsky.social

True story; there are long standing leaks in our PhD room and research corridor where participants are brought. Instead of actually fixing the leak the solution apparently is to build little wooden trays for the buckets catching water from the leaks. Excellence in action.

This would be a real shame in psychology, our final year dissertations are the highlight of the programme for many of our students and have proven to be pretty AI free so far.

Jay Van Bavel, PhD@jayvanbavel.bsky.social

The number of people writing dissertations in the humanities and social sciences has collapsed. I'd wager that we will see a similar trend in psychology and other fields before long. Cuts in funding, the tight academic job market, and AI are cratering grad programs.

Mind you , I am preparing a manuscript now which contains the word "scaldy".

Andrew Coogan@cooganlab.bsky.social

I see that "out of whack" is now acceptable scientific terminology, and will endeavor to use in the future.

From the minister about to spaff away 150 million on “AI Upskilling”, whatever the fuck that is.

RTÉ News@news.rte.ie

Minister for Higher and Further Education James Lawless has said the demand from Irish universities for €250 million to bridge a core funding gap is "significantly in excess" of the previously agreed figure.

I guess they are a breed apart then but still will accept the hard-won pay settlements negotiated.

Andrew Coogan@cooganlab.bsky.social

Irish university colleagues, did you experience senior managers showing up to the picket line to express solidarity with what is after all a shared cause?
