I put off Mother of Learning for way too long. Just starting Arc 4 and struggling to put it down. It scratches the progression fantasy part of my brain just right. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’™

I thought I blew my weeks of effort and lost nights of studying "System Design" with a lousy final interview. But today they called and offered me the role! I am beyond ecstatic and feel reinvigorated.

Could it finally be time for chaos with Ed Milliband? Because I want chaos with Ed Milliband

I cannot express strongly enough how much it sucks having to go to London to get my marathon bib days before the actual marathon. What a waste of time and money for something they could have posted. 6 hours I'm not getting back...

And why the excel centre? I can hardly think of a place less convenient for the majority of entrants.

Whenever I finish a book I want to find podcasts that discuss it. I haven't found a solution yet, so I'm thinking of building something myself. Thoughts? #booksky

Yes, we want it!

I've been putting off setting up some home battery automation to discharge what's left at the end of each day (before recharging on the off-peak overnight rate). I procrastinated as I couldn't be bothered to work out a clever way to avoid discharging energy I'd want to use in the evening. (cont)

It's impossible to charge and discharge at the same time, or import and export at the same time from the grid. So if something in the house needs the power, no problem. It will just reduce the power being exported from the battery.

You just need to work this out: At the current state of energy (how many kWh do I have stored, or SoC % * Battery Capacity), how many hours would it take to discharge at max power? Then take your target time, 23:30 for me, and subtract your discharge time from that. 2 hours? Discharge from 21:30

I thought it would need some kind of pattern analysis to predict my expected usage of a given evening. But then I spoke with a good friend of mine, who pointed out that it's much simpler than that.

This is how you "break link between the price of gas and the price of electricity": building more wind power, solar, grid upgrades and grid batteries. In March gas set the price of electricity some 65% of the time โ€“ it used to be 98% across a year

Ed Porter@edporter.bsky.social

How often did gas set the GB power price for March? This is a tracker for when the day-ahead price exceeds the SRMC of the most efficient CCGT in the system. It's a proxy for gas setting the wholesale price. It shows that the influence of gas on wholesale prices is declining in GB.

You can now talk to Bunny Database through the terminal ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป The interactive SQL shell is here โ€” and it's the first piece of the bunny.net CLI. REPL, dot-commands, saved views, secret masking, and non-interactive mode for scripts. Details on the blog๐Ÿ‘‡

It looks like it should be harmless to move, and it would really open things up if you just moved it elsewhere. Let's just... *๐‚๐‘๐€๐’๐‡* That was load-bearing code.

Thrilled to have been followed by an "autonomous agent" for the first time. But in my fit of excitement, I accidentally hit block.

I wrote about my experience adding a live reload feature to my static site generator, Lumaca. jon.chrt.dev/2026/03/20/a... Yes, the first post on my blog is about the software I wrote to make the blog. It's a rite of passage.

I'm very open to comments and criticism. I'm not an expert in Go, SSGs or SSE. But it was an interesting feature to implement and fun to write some blogumentation.

Your mobile hero section looks perfect in dev tools. Then you test on a real phone and half of it is hidden behind the address bar. The solution? Three new CSS viewport units: svh, lvh, and dvh.

Ever noticed how your entire page shifts when you open a modal? That's not a bug, that's a missing CSS property.
