you can tell Claude writes great code because every website in 2026 has an ever-increasing frequency of timeouts, blank pages, weird errors, and downtime. imagine a carpenter telling you "use this or get left behind" and they hand you a hammer that hits your hand instead of the nail 20% of the time

One thing folks outside NY-17 should know and keep in mind is that there is a very large ultra-orthodox Jewish population who constitute a significant voting bloc, and whose blend of left/right political views seems atypical to many Americans. Both candidates will try to navigate that.

The district she is running for was basically split Trump-Harris, so this is the conventional wisdom play. It is also a misread of the 2026 electorate and exactly what her incumbent opponent is also saying.

I do not, for instance, think Conley can buddy up to Mamdani and expect to get the Satmar vote. So she either has to distance herself, or gamble that aligning with Mamdani will swing enough other votes to compensate for that loss. It's far safer to hedge her bets.

It was actually a little funny in 2024 when people around the country started pointing to one of our local towns as proof of electoral fraud because the votes went 99% for Trump and ~95% for Democrats in lower offices, but locals know that's not at all unusual for the Satmar population.

I don't want to simplify Satmar politics, because I'd risk stereotyping, but what I can tell you is that the Satmar population historically tends to vote as a unit, with VERY few dissenters. They can absolutely swing a close election, so neither candidate can afford to lose them.

That's not a unique situation--other districts around the country have communities of interest who tend to vote as a bloc--but it's not common, and so for a lot of us who are unfamiliar with the situation it will lead to very strange political stances.

My cousin’s shirt took me a second. He said “it’s great because anyone who would be offended by it couldn’t understand it anyway.”

Even from a purely national pride perspective, this requires you to think that the 100 year period from 1926 was a failure for the United States, instead of the zenith of its power, prosperity, and influence

Artists, it's increasingly important that you sign your work. Every time. It's harder and harder to tell what is AI-generated, but seeing a human signature is at least a clue. Even better, an @ or a URL so we can find you and see you're real.

Police murdered a Black man in the street in Madison WI today. Shot point blank in the head while on the ground, tased, and surrounded by four cops. It looks like an execution. Multiple videos circulating online. Things are about to get very bad here.

In a free country, failing to comply with law enforcement does not give the state license to murder you

Homan on people getting killed by ICE: "It comes down to one simple fact -- these people failed to comply with law enforcement ... all they had to do is comply. If they did, they'd be alive today."

I have a theory about the general impatience and lack of tolerance people have not only for children, but for any and all habits of others they find annoying. I think it stems from the cultural shift away from public spaces to being home all the time.

Kat Abughazaleh@katmabu.bsky.social

I cannot overstate how much I hate when people are dicks about babies crying in public (especially airplanes). Do you think the parent is having a good time right now?? Do you think they are not aware of the situation??? Are you going to negotiate with a literal infant????

We've grown accustomed to having control over our environments, so when we're forced to share space with other people who bother us (like on a plane, say) we lack the emotional capacity to just tune it out. Instead of a mild annoyance, it becomes a disruption we cannot ignore.

I think the test of my theory is: How tolerant were the Boomers and early generations, really? My impression, from the people I know, is that Boomers and earlier generations were still annoyed, but responded by keeping it to themselves and trying to tune out the annoyance. But I can't be sure!

i said last year that these people were segregationists and that “merit” just meant “white and male” to these people

If you fill a room with 1,000 people who each earn one dollar a year and one person who earns a million dollars, the median income of that room is $500,000 and everyone in the third and fourth quintile is earning one dollar a year. Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

Personally, I think people who are between the third and fourth quintile of income-earners in California should probably pay some income tax.

The median income of California's top quintile is $1.3 million and this guy is worrying about people earning less than 10% of that. Concentration of wealth in California is significantly worse than the rest of the nation. www.ppic.org/publication/...

a 2028 campaign ad where the average american voter is represented as the guy from memento but all the tattoos are like “every republican president destroys the economy and starts a war in the middle east“ or “trump was president during covid”

People aren't wrong to compare the Trump era to the Nazis, but what worries me is how much it's like the Soviets: Pretending everything is working right and going great when it's all really falling apart, and marginalizing anyone who dares speaks the truth. When is our Chernobyl coming?

I have to admit that I was not feeling much hope for Sonny Burton, so this is an amazing relief. We at @uscedp.bsky.social are still new as a public-facing organization, and seeing thousands and thousands of people join this effort was more than we hoped for. Thank you. www.waff.com/2026/03/10/g...

It is so damning of US news media that so many outlets refuse to just straight up say that Senator Tim Sheehy assaulted an activist. He did not "help" Capitol police. They did not need his help. He wanted to assault the guy and did. He should resign.

As much as I honor the memory of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, it's a HUGE problem that we don't see the same rage and awareness when Border Patrol murders a non-white, non-citizen. Whatever you think of undocumented immigration, it is not punishable by death. This is murder, plain and simple.

Julian Sanchez@normative.bsky.social

They beat a blind refugee who speaks no English for failing to obey police commands he could not understand. Then instead of apologizing, they charged him with possession of a “weapon”—HIS WALKING STICK. Then they dumped him miles from home without notifying anyone, after which he was found dead.
