At one point in the movie, Reynolds qua Top Gun style American hotshot, 1987, says to his new Russian buddy, “right now the only way to stand up for my country is to stand up TO it” and then I had to cry

Done in the tech mines for the night. What’s good in tech land tonight ? I got to see a coworker’s cat today so that was awesome

Everyone is being extremely normal

Apparently there is T. Kingfisher discourse! This is wonderful! I haven't read any of it, so I just assume everybody is talking about how good her books are and how funny she is. Let me just take a big sip of coffee before I start scrolling and--

It is ALMOST as though WE FUCKING WARNED YOU and we were not being TOO FUCKING SENSITIVE

A weird thing about being a trans guy is that before I was a guy I was a daughter and a sister and one of the girls. I’m not sure now what to do with those identities. There are even some of like to keep. It’s an odd displacement.

Gonna read the hell out of this

🔇 🔇 🔇 My book, Deep Unlearning, is now available for preorders! I don't know how people write so many books because this one took a lot out of me. It turns out, I had a lot to say 😂, with editors cutting out 50k of my words 🫣 ✴️ You can now preorder it at www.simonandschuster.com/books/Deep-U....

I didn’t realize this needed to be said but yes I’m also not arguing chat bots ARE sentient. But if you’re constantly interacting with them the way you would with colleagues, how much does it matter? How accustomed do you wish to get to de facto having servants who can’t refuse?

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

Look if chatbots are sentient and feeling then the people using it are enslavers and the entire concept of what we are doing is horrifying, not enlightening.

Hey techies etc If you were at a conference and saw a talk something like “Networking for Nerds: it’s just having friends, with a bigger graph” would you attend? (I’ve been told I’m good at networking and I’m figuring out why that is, and if I’m not careful this exercise will turn into a Ted talk)

I do think “every rich person went insane during covid because it was the first time they’ve been inconvenienced in decades” felt a little reductive at first but damn if isn’t more and more compelling as the years drag on

My brain has woken me up at 5am just so I can be angry at shit my grandfather did 30 years ago While the emotion is fair I’d like to go back to sleep now

I have been doing Very Well and my psychiatrist says I have Stabilized Nicely, everyone clap. (I am posting this partially to fight back against my internalized ableism, which is telling me to be ashamed. Fuck that shit.)

So about the meta glasses: absolutely way too many people being creeps, but I read a post by someone who was blind and who suddenly found it amazingly easy to navigate, as the glasses would find road signs etc. and able them to navigate And I wish we'd market them that way

I made French fries from potatoes my kiddo and I grew in the garden and they were damn good. Not something I’d wanna do all the time but this might be a few-times-a-year treat now.

I think it’s been clear for some time that the American experiment is not proceeding within operational parameters. Have the relevant IRBs review the continuation of this experiment appropriately?

It occurs to me that one of AI’s core features is to restate what you said with an air of authority. If you are already doing the work and have a marketing problem, this is a GREAT feature There are def some use cases where this feature is harmful though so caveat emptor, I guess?
