Beatrice “Trixie” Worsley: Canada’s 1st female computer scientist & 1st woman in the world to earn a PhD in #ComputerScience, Cambridge 1952.
Wrote the 1st program on EDSAC & co-developed Transcode (early compiler) opening computer access to scientists across Canada. Born #OTD in 1921. #WomenInSTEM
Really happy with this talk giving a comprehensive update on #CarbonLang - youtu.be/WJl4ftb5Fxg
- Updated syntax we've landed on
- The _amazing_ C++ interop that is working and implemented now
- A nice, brief sneak-peak at the memory safety model (instead of the 2-hour deep dive)

The Argentinian player that scored the 1st goal against England, is the same one that uploaded a social media video of himself singing racist and transphobic songs about Black French players.
The transphobia was included to insult Kylian Mbappé, and to isolate trans people from public life.
My LinkedIn is full of posts by former Microsoft colleagues who accepted the voluntary retirement offer. I counted at least 9 posts from people I worked with in the past.
For some reason, it felt even sadder than layoff posts. It was hard to put into words until this post from a now ex-Microsoftie.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has delivered on his signature campaign promise after New York City's Rent Guidelines Board voted 7-1 to approve the first-ever two-year rent freeze in the board's history for roughly 1 million rent-stabilized apartments across the city.
as promised, here is my post on AI and ethics.
I think unilateral disarmament in the face of powerful new tools is neither wise nor effective.
I think those of us in tech have a particular responsibility to engage, participate and build better solutions.

A must read IMO.
I'm not saying I agree with literally every point, but this is IMO the closest stance on AI to my own, and a really well written one so it's a pleasure to read. =]

“I will be one of the Jewish members of Congress most willing to stand up for Palestinian human rights. And I will stand firmly against bigotry aimed at Jews. Those are not two different jobs. They are the same job,” Brad Lander said.
I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you dislike the Democratic party and think that you can do better, then please run for our nomination!♥️🗳️
If you win, they become your resources. If they help you win, they're your volunteers. Ask Dems to invest time, money, and energy. Many will say yes.
I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you hate the Democratic Party, then please don’t run for our nomination.
Don’t use our resources. Don’t rely on our volunteers. Don’t use our infrastructure. Don’t ask Democrats to invest their time, money, and energy in your campaign.
Happy Juneteenth! When we celebrate the time that racist Texans tried to keep slavery going for another 2 years after abolition. But "the news🤡" of abolition reached their slaves!
By "the news" I of course mean Black soldiers from the United States Colored Troops that liberated the Black Texans.
writing my second response on AI, this one on ethics. here's my list, what am I missing?
come on bsky, you were built for this day 😉
* datacenters that are too loud and use fresh water
* data labeling work that is extractive & exploitative, chasing low pay
* models trained on data without consent
Amazing compressed summation of the horrible nature of the "anti-DEI" movement:
"[excluding] diverse people to accommodate diverse views about those people's inferiority"
(it's a dense, carefully worded statement ... take the time to parse it all out.)
The only "diverse" views incompatible with DEI efforts are those fundamentally centered on the inferiority of specific groups, and consequentially on the _superiority_ of the other group.
This is how to recognize white supremacy. It's right there.
1. Your coworkers shouldn’t be the first humans to have read what you produce. Vetting the content is on you.
2. If you’re using AI, you have no excuse for the content being lengthy and verbose. Conciseness is a prompt away.

There. Are. No. Women. Aged. 15.
Girls. You mean girls.
Racists keep trying to spin declining child abuse and the resultant teen pregnancy as a bad thing. It's not.

Not sure I'm fully bought into the conclusions, but I find the core idea of quality being better achieved through a differnet process quite compelling. At least as an idea.

Reducing review stages, even to an uncomfortable degree, is going to be needed. But you can’t just reduce review stages without something to replace them. That way lies the Ford Pinto or any recent Boeing aircraft.

Every team has some monoliths that are a little too big, and too many layers of reviews. Maybe we won't get all the way to Singularity. But, we can engineer a much better world. Our problems are solvable.
It just takes trust.

Choice pull-quotes:
"""
Every time something goes wrong, you have to ask, “How did this happen?” and then do a whole post-mortem [...] and fix the underlying Root Causes so that it doesn’t happen again. [...] Why was it possible for the coder to get it wrong?

My new favorite rebuttal to tired citations that women are "in general" and "consistently" less competitive and less willing to take risks. Also some seriously fabulous research work.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
It's hilarious to me how much white Dems are like "Yes ICE is terrible. Yes cops do exactly the same things as ICE, at 10x to 100x the scale, but they target Black people, so that's OK! We have to be careful what arguments we make about ICE, or we will immediately have to reckon with the police."
I think there is a pretty clear-cut argument that DHS as named has to go
But people are gonna need to quickly do some reckoning with the realities of what that will actually look like and what entities from DHS will still be around if you don't want "abolish ICE" to be the next "defund the police"
This fundraiser was so successful that I’m doing another one! The extra funds that were set for the first family went towards the second family’s total rent need. Let’s keep it going!
I am now raising rent funds for another Minneapolis family who has been impacted by ICE. For this family, the remaining need is $775.
Can we make this happen for them today? I believe in us & will post receipts!

(repeating a question asked repeatedly over the years)
Partner: Why did we ever abandon Disco?
(context: Disco is the most hilariously upbeat and happy music genre)
(for the first time offering a real answer)
Me: Because we realized, eventually, that the timeline we were on didn't _deserve_ Disco.
I know lots of folks are sending free whistles where they are needed. But if I am happy to buy some and help fund those and related efforts, any recommendations for where to buy them?
I get tired of saying it, but I’ll say it again: the nature of oppression in America is that they workshop it first on Black, Latino, Asian & Native people.
But it is always, in the end, coming for everyone.
The arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are a test for every MSM member with a platform. If you are not voicing your outrage at this blatant violation of the First Amendment, you are utterly discredited as a journalist.
On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the six million Jewish people murdered by the Nazis, as well as countless other victims.
We honor their lives by rejecting the evils of antisemitism, dehumanization, and authoritarian violence wherever they appear.
Never again means never again for anyone.
DAILY MEMO: ICE Continues to Use CHP and Local Police Resources Despite California's Sanctuary State Policy
Around 40 people were kidnapped from Santa Paula to Riverside, with more than half from the City of L.A. in the last three days.

If you want to know where Silicon Valley is at these days, this story doesn't mention that one reason the pro-murder VC in this story works at this fund because he was fired for sexual harassment from his prior job at Square.
At times like this I’m glad I deleted my X account so I don’t encounter such ghoulish takes by tech bros and VCs.
Truly just the worst of humanity to celebrate a senseless death just to show your allegiance to their orange king.
Current status of the fundraisers for those killed by ICE:
Renee Good: $1,499,580
Alex Pretti: $1,289,249
Keith Porter, Jr. $302,423
Parady La: $45,848
Heber Sanchez Dominguez: $47,991
Luis Beltrán Yanez Cruz: $18,640
Victor Manuel Diaz: $2,538
Geraldo Lunas: $2,260
Luis Gustavo Núñez: $1,935
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”
That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
Almost every reason people have for defunding or abolishing ICE is also a reason to defund or abolish the police, yet many people who are rightly calling for action against ICE would never come close to doing to the same for police. But this fight goes beyond just ICE. ICE represents a larger issue.
When you help make it so the only names people know are Pretti and Good, you reinforce the culture that says these things aren't "bad enough" until white people get involved. This has been going on for a whole year. Many non-white people have died in this same way trying to protect their neighbors.
Somewhere in the US != MN, relatively safe, financially stable, especially if you're white, and wondering what you can actually do to help?
Can seem daunting (did to me)...

Scroll down, randomly pick 5 things and donate what you can. Now you've done something.
I mean, read all the posts pointing out the women's work that has _always_ kept things going for these dudes (and myself and other dudes!)...
But also, bankrolling you say? Why yes, we (those of us not in MN and currently safe) _can_ bankroll this thing!!!!

I mostly just stay off Twitter altogether but after double checking that the Walter Hudson post was still up I ran across this and just had to share so the Romancelandians who bought hand warmers could hear about the PROFESSIONAL GRADE LOGISTICS.
