And the lesson is that, despite his flaws, he had a committed focus on improving the lives of ordinary working people in tangible ways, he was uncompromising in opposition to fascists, and when he lost the first round he used it to motivate his supporters to throw everything at the second round.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

The MTA’s primary union is spending a ton of money to try and swing the vote against Hochul (the most pro-transit governor in generations) When Hochul wins by double digits anyway, I hope she remembers this and plays hardball with the union on efficiency improvements like OPTO and automating IBX

RW disinfo media's messages are backfiring now. And you are absolutely right, that Dems shd make them backfire as much as possible. RW media said 1000X T wd lower grocery/gas prices, deport violent criminals only & end 4ever wars. Ppl see T/GOP did the opposite. Dems DO need to focus on that.

& T wd deport violent criminals only & end 4ever wars. And MOST media/social media are RWng so more ppl heard lies than the truth. Most mystifying things about U.S. politics become crystal clear once you realize that: Disinfo sways elections. Ppl don't believe it does. bsky.app/profile/upin...

This is the gov we get when most media/SMedia are Right Wing propaganda outlets that lie to get GOP votes for dumb authoritarian con artists--because those con artists cater to the desires of the wealthy GOP media owners. As long at T/GOP cater to their desires, they don't care what else they do.

Here's how this works. Centrists pundits, like most ppl, assume that disinfo doesn't work & that T/GOP voters knew & voted for what T/GOP is doing. So they advise Dems not to make all those imaginary T lovers mad In reality voters voted for T bc RWng media said 1000X he'd lower grocery/gas prices

There is hope for some of the newer voices in the Democratic Party like AOC and AES because they realize you have to actually stand for something to build a movement and draw people toward you. The old guard must all be overthrown. Their laziness and cowardliness can never defeat fascism.

This also explains why it is that the people you keep seeing shoved in your face as "liberal thought leaders" are always pushing moderate conservatism and placating reactionaries: -Steven Pinker -Matt Yglesias -Noah Smith -Malcolm Gladwell -Jonathan Haidt -Ezra Klein ...

So why does this failed, illogical, and immoral viewpoint continue to rule the Democratic elite class? Because popularism is easy. Its main dictate is to do nothing. And because of the plurality wins format of American elections, you can win them even if you don't campaign at all.

Simple pragmatism should have dictated the abandonment of this theory of change since it never led Clinton to a majority of his own, and it was not the method that Barack Obama used in the 2008 race which he won overwhelmingly. Popularism has been a total failure during the Trump era as well.

The clip that I quoted in the OP is the essence of basically all DC Democratic thinking: Never, ever do anything unless you can cite a poll saying that it would be popular. It doesn't matter how evil or how illegal, you should say or do nothing.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

I have to note that pretty much every example I've seen of Trump being more deranged or deteriorated than he's ever been turns out to be: 1. Him lying as he always has and not giving a fuck 2. Him doing a bit 3. Him being furious about reality He's just him. Underestimating him is how we got here.

Sorry to be an ass but voters won't "at some point" come to understand corruption and corporate greed are deepening an unsustainable wealth gap. We need to keep hitting the hammer, mobilizing, and organizing. Reality is scarier than than the lies; we don't need to "rise above," we need to punch.
