I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Lars Ulrich, a far more annoying guy than James Hetfield, doesn't like his politics either.

“Who funds him?” No one funds him! There’s nothing to fund. He just gets the same bin costume out the loft for one evening every 6-12 months.

They should keep the Minions in the world of Hollywood. Imagine the Minions on the set of Apocalypse Now...they're supposed to work for Coppola but they think Brando is actually Colonel Kurtz and worship him like a god

Saw this today. Guffawed when I saw the recreation of Xanadu from'Citizen Kane' but I think everyone else in the audience thought it was just a normal mansion.

Minions & Monsters is unhinged Dada madness. I enjoyed the heck out of it. I never imagined that one of these movies would reference Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, the Day the Earth Stood Still, and HP Lovecraft all at once.

watched 'The Hit' (1984) recently. Easy to forget that Stphen Frears used to make movies that were a little more hard-edged than they are now, and he was once quite the arranger of sublime images.

In the list of 'achievements' the biggest was probably ending the two child cap which Starmer and Reeves had to be dragged kicking and screaming into finally ending which pretty much sums up his time in office. It's sad for him I'm sure but he's been a massive disappointment no getting around that.

Nick Timothy, Dominic Cummings, Morgan McSweeney - we've had a parade of overmighty subjects in Number 10 who turn out to be hopeless at governing. The reign of the "political strategist" has not been a golden age for British politics.

There's no way of building genuine progressive movements without grappling with universal human problems of shitty behaviour and taking pleasure in acting righteous while hurting others. The longer I've been doing the work, the less value I place on stated beliefs, and the more on lived behaviour.

This was quite the unforced error. There was absolutely no pressing need for Mandelson to have a role in government.

Disappointed Optimist@disappoptimism.bsky.social

For those that can’t remember tiny bits of news from September 2025: Lord Mandelson failed security services vetting & agency officials went on the record saying Mandelson was a bad idea. This was ignored by UK Gov/PM.

Of all the New Labour guys, Mandelson is the most interesting (derogatory). A career of continuously failing upwards, each scandal more catastrophic than the last…

“Yes, obviously” Two words to shut down the question and still communicate to everyone watching “what a stupid thing to ask”.

#bbclaurak tries to get a gotcha. Zack, you refuse to fly. How can you be a candidate for high office if you'd refuse to ever get on a plane? Well Laura, in that situation I'd get on a plane.

"If you watch an episode of Cheers, you might hear references to foreign filmmakers, to classical musicians, to Russian novelists. The level of assumed knowledge back then was far greater; now, TV is rarely adventurous in its allusions."

'No Other Choice' is great, of course. Even in the moments without gags, I found myself laughing because of the sheer cleverness of its camera angles and scene transitions. There are things Park is doing here as virtuoso as Spielbergo and De Palma.

In the 2010s, the Icelandic tv station Channel 2 accidentally added subtitles from a gritty crime drama to an episode of Teletubbies. I have translated some of the highlights

Spray paint a plane and they'll detain you without trial and call you a terrorist. Kidnap a foreign head of state - and Keir Starmer will make it clear we've played no part in it but will wait for the scheduled press conference in a few hours before potentially condemning it
