Fun to see this great podcast about old gaming magazines finally cover an issue I worked on, pretty much smack dab in the middle of my OPM tenure. I can't listen to it all right now, but I'll offer some commentary along the way as I get through it. 🧵
It's FunFactor FUUUUUUUUUUESDAY! Come for the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, stay for games we missed out on and the 5 star review of Sly Cooper, then tag along for the afterparty with, uh, @scalzi.com?? It's Official PlayStation Magazine #62!
Glad they were impressed by the inclusion of the Mark Hamill interview. Aka, 20 of my favorite minutes in life. Actual audio here: youtu.be/p1gSrIZqw_A?...

A little more on our GTA3 "inside scoop." I really don't recall us getting any "GTA3 is gonna be huge" hype beyond Rockstar itself. Everyone could see it was something special. But would it sell magazines? I remember @milkman.bsky.social especially evangelizing it for EGM. Maybe pushed for a cover?

They question @jwhdavison.bsky.social's column here -- something about OPM probably knowing more than the other guys about GTA3's potential. Nah. We saw it a lot, yeah, but usually in the presence of other journalists at the time. I personally pushed hard for DMC, but that didn't happen. (Good!)

One early note to get things started: The guys recognize that Clish McLaver, our rumor columnist, wasn't a real person. They also speculate the name comes from clishmaclaver, a Scottish term for gossip. Yep! I still remember @jwhdavison.bsky.social discovering the word in a thesaurus.
They reflect on our killer list of contributers, of course especially calling out @scalzi.com. I still remember @joerybicki.com excitedly recommending him as the guy to do our CD & DVD reviews. He's done OK since then. I never knew Karen, but I still consider Zoe and @paulsemel.bsky.social friends.

It’s not the headline, it’s the content. This 2003 Onion story named its characters after PlayStation Magazine editors—and “Chrissy Baker” was the girlfriend. Her boyfriend Troy Zuniga (named for fellow editor @adriantoddzuniga.bsky.social) even calls her C-Bake.
What is your favorite meme/Onion headline about your profession?
Also included “Terry Nguyen” (editor @thierrynguyen.bsky.social ) and “Zoe Flagler” (Zoe Flower, who was most known for her work with @victorlucas.bsky.social and Electric Playground, but who also wrote regular columns for us).
I had no idea how much death-defiance was behind the "no CJ tonight" in this 9/21 @p1podcast.com post. If you know Chris Johnston/@superpac.bsky.social at all -- personally, as an EGM reader, etc.-- you HAVE to listen to the latest episode. Chris, I'm so glad you're OK. What a harrowing experience.
Change of change of plans. Stewy’s gonna do an episode after all. No CJ tonight. Enjoy!

I was lucky enough to interview someone who worked on a game set within this universe. I even got to see behind the curtains of an unmade sequel comicbookvideogames.com/2023/05/11/e...

My Archie in Hell issue 1 variant cover is now up for pre-order over at Stadium Comics. This is the third of the connecting covers I did for the three number 1’s! Should I post the complete image tomorrow to celebrate the launch of Archie issue 1?? 👀 @oni-press.bsky.social @archiecomics.bsky.social

This is doubly relevant to my interests, and I have no idea what the connection might be. Looking forward to watching tonight, @alexjkane.bsky.social!
My favorite game on my first console. Didn’t know it had a commercial! The ad doesn’t convey the actual sense of fear the game had—incredible sound design given its system restraints. You couldn’t see what was ahead of you till you got there. Limited ammo. Survival horror, really.

Just listened. You did great, @tlfoster.bsky.social ! 😀
I did a half assed verison of whatever good thing that @cbake.bsky.social would have done. But this was fun
I played Castlevania on the Sharp X68000 and “glorious” really undersells it. I didn’t know music from early ‘90s gaming could sound so good. I have no idea what its “bit” equivalent would be, but the graphics looked better than SNES to me. Wish I had had more time with it. So good.
Today is the final day of @liretro.bsky.social - stop by to try out hundreds of retro consoles, arcades, and rare computers like this glorious Sharp X68000!
