I don't know how to convince you to take care of your comrades. But Long COVID impacts every fight for justice, every social movement. Honor the energy and integrity of the folks in my latest @thesicktimes.org feature. Be careful with each other so we can be dangerous together.

I get (too well) the executive function challenges that keep folks out of the profession but I also can’t get over how few journalists seem to be neurodivergent when a big part of the job is asking annoying questions and refusing to let something go 😆

There are a lot of decent people doing good work right now, and hope is breaking through. As a result, our enemies are thrashing about and lashing out in extremely dangerous ways. We must be alert and aware and resist overwhelm and panic. Where can you contribute?

Keep deleting & rewriting a post about how nice it was to report on a community event this weekend and encounter other maskers in the room. Among other benefits, the group normalizing makes my job much easier. More people talk, agree to interviews, when I’m one more masked person, not the only one

It's corrosive to my mental health to monitor conditions everywhere I go. But it's important when a Flo Mask guy runs event check-in & strangers in ACI duckbills, Powecoms pass in the hall. It matters every time we take up a lot of space together.

Birding is basically asexual cruising, highly skilled loitering in odd areas. Hang around parks, beaches, water treatment areas; listening, watching. Notice other people with appropriate gear, nod silently then huddle close, unspeaking, all looking in different directions. Wait for action.

Eclectic, human-created radio programming is made possible not just because of student devotion, but also because many campus stations house irreplaceable collections of physical media. @brittashoot.com details the free speech fight playing out on campuses where student radio is disappearing.

with all respect: i'm losing touch with what AI does because i have no interest in it and it's not my business. nobody worries about me losing touch with developments in particle physics or artificial bull insemination. it's not my fault the richest guys on earth want me to make their toy my life

Will Oremus@willoremus.com

feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

This is one of those important, overlooked stories that's hard to report & even harder to place. I'm grateful @prismreports.org understood what's at stake for students fighting these fragmented free speech battles, while they also endure the chaos in higher ed & the nation in general 📻⬇️

We’ve spent many, many hours over the past few months searching the rock pools of Cornwall for a rainbow sea slug. Today, we finally found one! Absolutely worth all the time we’ve spent - it was truly breathtaking.

endless rancid discourse counteracted last night in a film screening when a well-adjusted adult stranger sat next to spouse and me, glanced at our masks, pulled out his own and put it on without a word 😷🫡

did you know early HIV activists also overlapped with CPUSA? I'd annotate about yet another early pandemic alliance parallel if my blog wasn't a disused substack I have other things to do today than migrate to ghost but the runaway toxic discourse lacking historical framing makes my fingers itch!

Read actual local journalism about the discourse & its impact! He hopes the media attention will give the community momentum to mobilize and further educate people why masking is still important. “At the end of the day, we’re still going to do the work. We’re still going to mask.” 💜✊

As a writer often covering queer and/or mask-required spaces, I'll say that it's not obligatory that I'm part of or accomplice to these communities, but other reporters' profound lack of empathy has always been much scarier & more dangerous to me than any subculture or marginalized group

Logged off after writing this and now see that I created fine examples of how you can tell when a writer is furious: notice how many times she uses the same damn words ("fight" + “stay” lol) in individual posts, because she's so blind with rage she can barely compose or edit her outbursts

I'll probably delete this but imagine fighting to stay employed as a journalist in 2026 & deciding to broadcast insular infighting to prop up how cool and removed you are, rather than explore the despair & abandonment fueling these fights for scraps of belonging and access

And no I haven’t read it & fucking won't. I’m seething how much it hurts everyone I care about & I’m busy finishing stories about Long COVID treatments, hiking trails, repair clinics, hacking powerchairs, community radio. Some of us stay writing to offer love and solidarity, to uplift not tear down.

the whole world does not need to weigh in on what one lesbian bar does in one community. but it will. the bar will become a stand in, a site where impulses to assert ableism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia will run freely. this is a betrayal of the point of journalism itself

I’ve seen a lot of older people wearing masks in my neighbourhood. I don’t know how the rest of society walks past that clear signal for help. If you see someone in a mask or respirator, you should wear one… at the very least…

it's now the phase of every COVID surge when city employees supporting marginalized folks and managing shelters text me personally, asking for masks from mutual aid groups not mad at the individuals!! absolutely fucking furious at the system though. glad to be of service but I'm just some woman!

worth adding I’ve written an excellent, incredibly long essay about this — social murder, volunteers responding to institutional abandonment, supply distro in times of wrongly criminalized mutual aid, the threat of a good idea — that some wise, radical editor will eventually snap up inshallah 🙏
