A number of manuscripts in the renowned Cotton collection were damaged or destroyed in the fire at Ashburnham House, London, #OTD in 1731. The Lindisfarne Gospels, pictured, and the Durham Liber Vitae were among those to survive.

Read a book. Leave a review. Make an author happy. Raise a book's visibility. Help a potential reader find a new book. It's a win-win.

Old English people, help: what is the earliest manuscript that uses the letter K in an OE text? Afaict K is not in the earliest little poems; the Ruthwell Cross DotR is in runes, so it gets transcribed as if it contains K but Roman alphabet K isn't there. No K words in the earliest glosses–?

Glasgow Scribes@glasgowscribes.bsky.social

Huh -- so when did K start getting used in Old English?

Reading book proofs and enjoying this grumpy queen from the Lewis Chessmen. She’s just spent a day at war surrounded by less competent courtiers, no other woman to bitch to & a husband with no sense of urgency to move anywhere fast. Strong drink in hand, she’s so done with this week #medievalsky

For some weird reason spotting spoons stuck in people's hats has made me happy ever since I was a little girl. Just seemed like a smart way to carry a spoon in case of emergency eating. Was it only a thing in the low countries? Anyway, some examples:

#booksky #skystorians advice please? Currently going through proofs & publication is on the horizon what are the best ways to promote your work? Personally I don't like being a centre of attention or lecturing to a crowd of strangers (unless they are students, that's different) what worked for you?

111 years ago, on the 21st of September 1915, Cecil Chubb bought Stonehenge for 6600 pounds. He donated it to the state three years later on a few conditions, including a maximal entrance fee of one shilling.
