guys i promised some news and here it is... I'm writing another book. Look for VIOLENCE: A CHRISTIAN HISTORY in bookstores in late 2027/ early 2028

related, i've been really leaning into asking my students how they're doing. noting if they've been out for a bit, checking in on them. they're universally grateful someone care. 10/10 no notes. recommend.

The kids are alright, man

oh, as a teacher, I can tell you that's a "i didn't read it" sentence

Dave Levitan@davelevitan.bsky.social

It is short and so I assume they are looking into things but it is... interesting... that the NYT piece on the new House Dems report on Trump ties to Epstein simply does not mention the brand new rape allegation and says whatever this is instead www.nytimes.com/2026/10/26/u...

question for historians: we hear a lot of "you gotta judge them by the standards of their times" nonsense to justify horrors from the past, but do you know any examples of people using that same ARGUMENT in the past? like I cannot IMAGINE medievals saying "well, Athens was another time you see"

guys i know it's a bad argument. this isn't my first day. please don't respond unless you have a specific historical example of someone, before the 21st century, using that argument.

Cornel West sucks

Sludge@sludge.bsky.social

NEW: The group behind Cornel West's 2024 ballot push was wholly funded through Elon Musk's dark money network, according to Sludge's review of tax documents. readsludge.com/2026/10/26/m...

this is only true if you woke up in 2024 and Trump 1 and the entire Republican Party across the last half century and more didn't exist but it's an excerpt from an interior designer and podcaster turned political commentator so this is the level of commentary we deserve I guess

i like arguing about dumb shit on here. make me feel like a 13th-century scholastic at one of the lesser medieval universities arguing about how many angels can fit into a loaf of rye bread

This is… correct?

Vampires are inherently Catholic. Werewolves are inherently Protestant. Zombies are inherently Atheist. Thank you for coming to my presentation.

The global far right is global. Opposition to it should be too

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

I, posting on Bluesky, the niche microblogging app, am pure. everyone else who votes against the fascists is complicit in eugenics.

Republicans have moved away from such meetings in favor of tele-town halls. Democrats say they’re hiding; Republicans say they’re reaching more people. https://mrf.lu/2HpMW

This. And if most Americans weren't aware of this in 2019, I'd guess they're even less so now. Public university students were paying for a third of the cost of their education in 2009, and it was up to half by 2019. 2009 wasn't great compared to the 60s-70s, either. www.pbs.org/newshour/edu...

i loved Deathloop. such a fun, funny game

Aysha@ayshaufarah.bsky.social

A game I think really got slept on is Deathloop. Extremely stylish, interesting conceit, fun protagonist, leans into Arkane’s main strength i.e. sending you on stealth missions to kill a bunch of weird perverts

Actually, positive change is slow, difficult and incremental by nature. Destroying is fast, building is slow. It is easy to bring misery to people - any idiot can do it, as Trump shows - but very hard to improve their conditions. Building a better society is slow, careful, patient work.
