Be serious. Bert and Ernie are not “in love.” Maybe they used to be, once

Engineers treat perceived friction as a problem to be automated away, while digital accessibility is more about reframing how to think about and approach the medium. We'll be doing this dance until the heat death of the universe.

The biggest change in software development is not AI code, but a permission structure for disregarding quality in the pursuit of velocity

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday. It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.

Omg. WTF is Happening?@lalahaenzy.bsky.social

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

Also, of course, the State Department changing typefaces for reasons that boil down to "fuck accessibility" is both utterly in line with the overt bigotry of this administration and a signal indicator of how unserious these people are, it doesn't matter what typeface you use when you're a joke

My company gave me a new macbook today, with twice as much RAM, even though my last one was only a year old M4 mac with, frankly, plenty of memory. I'm taking this as a comforting sign that I am not at risk of losing my job anytime soon, if they have this kind of cash to burn...

Horrified to learn that we don't have dedicated engineers working on our design system at work anymore. Teams get to approve & merge in their own changes, updates, and additions, with, as far as I can tell, no oversight or governance. Coolcoolcool, this is fine.

"What should poor people be allowed to eat?" seems to be a burning question for those who aren't poor, have never been poor, and can afford to eat what they like, but want to keep poor people from eating anything that tastes really good. "No fresh meat," said Iowa, a few years ago.

"Again and again, accessibility as a topic in web standards is treated as simultaneously too trivial for specialists' technical opinions to be given weight, but also too difficult to get right without a specialist volunteering to tackle the tricky details." alice.boxhall.au/articles/a-t...

I returned my first car to the dealership today! It was a lease, we had four months left on it, but our insurance is sky high, my partner is going back to school, and that extra money goes a long way. I almost never drove it myself, but it's a little sad! Thanks for the adventures, Gladys.

About a year ago I bought a tiny, cheap little linux box with the intention of setting up a local web server, Just For Fun. I finally got it working! I won't share the link, the page is just a doodle, but still. It's such a small thing, but it's so cool this site lives 1' away from me in meat space.

and it's giving my soul a much needed balm. Stepping sideways into a special experience of time and space, where this body gets to exist in a way it can't/finds challenging in the mundane world.

TIL about responsive viewport units! Also this is, like, the fourth time I've seen something cool about/on the internet posted somewhere else, and saw that it was done by this delightful human. If you haven't seen lyra.horse/antonymph/ yet, do - it's my favourite piece of web-art.

i've finally got a new blogpost out!! this one talks about modern CSS, it's new features, and practical real world uses as usual, the visuals are css-only and have lots of cool interactivity and easter eggs :3 have fun! lyra.horse/blog/2025/08...

Using craigslist for the first time in a long time, and I'm just so thrilled at how *fast* everything is. Turns out not having tonnes of ads, javascript, and f e a t u r e s results in a site that just works, and works very well.

Sure I'm really proud of the a11y work I do, but this? Getting people to call buttons buttons instead of always CTAs? This is my real impact, my pride and joy.

I wrote a blog post about this: benjie.ca/blog/2025/05... Inspired by some similar thoughts by Clayton Ramsey: claytonwramsey.com/blog/prompt/

benjie.caWriting vs AI: It's Worth Doing BadlyBenjie K on the web

I was thinking about AI for, say writing, or coding. I was trying to answer, "why not use AI?" and it has to do with what learning a skill does to you. When we learn a skill, we create new pathways in our brain, reinforcing them repeatedly until, with mastery, the skill becomes effortless.
