At one point Morgan yells “WHAT?” at me and you have to read to find out why 😂 #Gaskell #northandsouth

This May, we're thrilled to bring a new edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's NORTH AND SOUTH (1855) to your bookshelves featuring a (heated!) conversation between Gaskell enthusiast Adrienne Garcia-Specht and actor/activist Morgan Spector (HBO's THE GILDED AGE). unnamedpress.com

I need to turn in my ballot (both for real election and the #xpncountdown) I have not given it enough thought aaahhh

Bruce Warren@somevelvetblog.bsky.social

Once again, we're gearing up for our annual #XPNCountdown here at @WXPN - we want your votes for what you think are the greatest songs from movies & tv. Here's my list, which would likely be different if I submitted a new one tomorrow. Vote here: xpn.org/885-countdown/

wait is no one else needing more parameters besides me? lol. so it means a song written FOR the tv or movie right? not just featured/in.

Just announced! The voting has begun for the theme for 885 Countdown this year: The 885 Greatest Songs from Movies & TV. Get your lists together and vote!!! xpn.org/885-countdown/

Me sitting up when I start All Creatures for the first time and see Brian Percival directs it! The smoky introductions of the city was definitely giving North and South

Appears to be yes. I haven’t even tried to watch Hotel St Marc in ages and when I do it’s down 😭 need to get the DVDs.

is pbs passport having issues for anyone else? crashes on my roku and when i login on website, not bringing up all episodes of some of my shows??

I wonder why there’s not much online chatter about Star City. Enjoyed it, and couldn’t help think of period drama icons Bessy and Nash when these two were on the screen. Wha a crossover!

Having completed the Jane Austen reread (unless I get to the letters), here is a little gem, ‘Jane in Vain’ by Paul Jennings (1957) (Long) #c18 #c18th #18thc

Random thought but I really hope the Masterpiece podcast has an episode with Felix Scott for season 7. They’ve done nearly the whole cast for Grantchester, so seems fair.

On bsky people saying don’t let anyone make you feel bad for being glad someone evil died—but you’re a prisoner of your own mind or in the wrong circles and consuming the world medium because I don’t see anyone shaming anyone. These are trial runs btw. Free yourself now from your own guilt.

starting our criterion collection for the first time this year...cannot wait for those films to get there (and for those points to hit the account so I can use them to order more lol)

wait no, am I shipping an unpopular ship? AGAIN? This is my lot in life.

I’m pretty sure Emma Lion is not going to end up with the person I want her to end up with, but I’ll try not to be too disappointed about it.

I don’t read a lot on my Kindle but have to for the Emma Lion series which my library didn’t have as a book, only audiobook, so I had to do free trial of kindle unlimited. Anyway I realized I could download fanfics to the kindle and that they look nice and save my spot.

I am not reading a lot of fanfic right now but I’m intrigued by this option! I feel late to the party about it. I did download my own fic to it (Sweetest Con) and I was like oh it looks so nice as an e book 🥹

Fascinating

I wrote about how to tell if a romance is AI over on threads. I'm going to cross post it here. When that dumb NYT article came out about that woman who said she published 200 books a year, and she revealed one of her pen names was Coral Hart..

Someone write an expose on why Slate is making all the podcasts change their format! Stop expecting so little of your listeners and catering to the lowest denominator :(

Change is hard. Chris, I loved your usual, somewhat more academic tone but will keep listening!

Announcing the return of my @slate.com podcast #HitParadePod! We now offer single-episode topics more frequently in a conversational style. For our comeback I go deep on ’80s shapeshifter + Rock Hall inductee Billy Idol. How’d the sneer king fuse punk w/pop+dance+goth+metal to rule MTV & the charts?

#Artemis crew to Mission Control, after seeing and attempting to describe the eclipse: "And if you could give me about 20 new superlatives in the mission summary tomorrow, that'll help my vocabulary out a bit. Thank you."

This is taking us forever to listen to because we keep pausing to share our own personal chart history. Great idea for an episode Chris!

Billboard Bildungsroman: For the 100th episode of #HitParadePod on @slate.com I go deep on my chart-geek history. Part 1: my musical memoir, Solid Gold to Nirvana. Part 2: the story of Casey Kasem, original #AmericanTop40 host—how he nationalized countdowns, invented the LDD & survived the Dead Dog.

sometimes i think about the early discourse around this show (WHICH I MISSED because i didn't start watching until ~2023) and how wildly different it is now.i was shocked to discover nash wasn't an obvious counter-ship (but then it was and pretty much the only ship with true energy online even now)

I really think that's why so many people latched onto Patrick Nash. We were supposed to see him as slimy and underhanded, but like he ADORES her!
