very cool and normal that the Trump Accounts official app from the US Government is actually written by day-trading app Robinhood and collects your search history for potentially selling to third parties

I am very confused by this story. The endowment is $68B now. That means that the 27% increase was approximately 14.5B. How does a 2.2B investment in a company that has been underwater almost the entire time since its IPO "power" a 14.5B jump?

I don't know how one can consider themselves a leader, much less an "opposition" leader, and say nothing when the party in power raids the home of a sitting lawmaker who they openly hate. I'm usually frustrated by @schumer.senate.gov's empty platitudes, but he hasn't even bothered with those.

Chuck Schumer — one of the most powerful Democrats in the country — has not issued statements to the press or through his social media channels about the administration’s attack on Ilhan Omar, which critics have described as a five alarm fire for the state of democracy in the U.S.

truthout.orgChuck Schumer Hasn’t Said a Word About Trump’s Attempt to Deport Ilhan OmarEthics lawyers say the raid violated the Hatch Act. Schumer has been silent.

Why should any Democrat care what GOP strategists are calling anything? Also, "mind-numbing malpractice" is a funny way to say, "not letting the opposition dictate terms to me, and then also making them look stupid in a very funny way".

As we start to see news about the "Nobel Prize in Economics", remember that it's not an actual Nobel Prize, but a PR vehicle by banks to legitimize economics as a field in the 60s. It is officially "The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel".

It's been criticized by Alfred Nobel's descendents as a misuse of his name, and by Hayek (while accepting his award, natch) as conferring an economist too much authority in the eyes of laypeople. (He claimed the science awards were for the benefit of their peers, who'd judge the work on its merit.)

*looking at the worst post of my life* I must not post. Reactive posting is the mind-killer. Dunking is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face the Bad Take. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. When the TL refreshes there shall be nothing. Only I remain.

God, Imagine being Rahm Emanuel and believing the problem with your candidacy would be your Jewishness and not... everything else about you. Like, who is the Rahm Emanuel constituency? Just James Carville and nobody else?

Ron Filipkowski@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

What better way to spent valuable time on a Sunday show a month before enormously consequential midterms than national political media demonstrating yet again how out of touch they are by continuing their relentless promotion of Emanuel’s presidential aspirations.

BTW, for those wondering, to the extent that the Civil War was about "states rights", this is what they meant: not the South bravely standing up for their rights, but the South incensed that Northern states were allowed to make laws at odds with their immoral ones.

To recap: three GOP-led states that wanted the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade in order to "send abortion back to the states" are now asking the Court to strike down abortion protections in blue states

The majority of white people still supporting this shitshow is, as they say, shocking, but not surprising.

Glad folks are appalled by photos of the "phone booth" cage under an awning, but pls understand: This IG report is likely part of a cover-up. Amnesty Int'l interviewed detainees EIGHT MONTHS AGO who said the cage was half this size (couldn't stand up), had no awning, w feet chained to the bottom.

Since becoming president again, Trump has promised: -$5000 stimulus checks via "DOGE dividend" -$2000 stimulus checks via "tariff dividend" -$1000+ checks via "savings" from expiring ACA subsidies -$5000 "dividend" if Rs win midterms No checks have been issued www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-magi...

thebulwark.comTrump’s Magically Disappearing Stimulus ChecksI was promised cheaper groceries and tariff rebates and all I got was this lousy pogrom.

I know there's no law and there's nobody who will have the fortitude to hold him to account, but this is plainly illegal. It's buying votes and misappropriation of government funds and whatever else. Republicans don't care. They have decided to ride this meteor straight to the end of the Republic.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

It turns out that public pressure can actually do good things! Who knew?

A couple of days ago, Australia post started a promo with HBO for the Harry Potter TV series. It you noticed the app logo changed to incorporate an owl, that's why. A bunch of people sent in complaints about the association with that revolting TERF JK Rowling. Today they replied. Partnership ended!

Somebody was really pleased with themselves about this headline.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”

The sexual tension here between Ms. Moreno and Animal is hotter than anything Hollywood could manufacture. They actually got married soon after this, divorced six months later.

Found this recording of Rita Moreno performing “Fever” on The Muppet Show from 1976. 14/10

"If you’re not prepared to give up a few puzzles, ask yourself – what are you willing to give up to protect those most under fire?" I don't care how little you think your absence will hurt JK Rowling/NYT/Chick-fil-A. What I notice is how little it costs *you* and you're still not willing.

If you care about trans rights you should stop playing Wordle and cancel your NYT subscription. That has been the case for a few years now, but if you haven’t already, you should do it now.

I'm on a United flight. My kid has sensibly downloaded content to watch offline on Disney+. They open the app, and it forces them to log back in, but it can't reach log in servers. Why is it trying? Because tablet auto-connected to the inflight wifi, but doesn't have an actual internet connection.

Still can't log in. State at things for way too long before remembering I have to actually set the thing to use my exit node on the ground. Finally open Disney+ app, log in, open up downloads page and disconnect all network. Child is finally able to watch their stories.

Other child... had wifi off, no problems whatsoever. I'm trying to decide who fucked up, and I'm pretty sure it's Disney+ for assuming wifi connection means "online". Pretty much breaks the point of offline downloads if you can get locked out by a network error.

Seems that "no streaming" means "no connections to streaming sites, even login". No problem, I'll just connect them to my tailnet. Of course, need to install @tailscale.com. Go to app store… no connection (no installing/updating apps either). Shit. No prob, just Quick Share the APK from my phone…

"Can't install, app does not support this device." Hmph. Go to Tailscale download page to directly download Android client… just a link to Play Store. Fuck. Scroll downdowndown to find official Tailscale GitHub APK page below a number of sketchy apk mirrors. Download universal apk, install, connect…

So, child locked out of local content they are authorized to view. I'm fancy, so I splurged the $8 to get "full" Wi-Fi (no streaming) on my laptop. I use the captive wifi portal on their tablet to switch full internet to their device temporarily. Try to log into Disney+… "no network connection".
