Bridgy Fed now officially supports Mastodon quote posts! If you see a post bridged from the Atmosphere on the Fediverse, you can quote it using your Mastodon account. Small note: this will work for posts starting this week - older posts are not supported. Happy quoting!

New status update! Better response UI, real fediverse outboxes, profile update fixes, faster fediverse delivery, security and reliability improvements, and more…

snarfed.orgsnarfed.orgHi everyone! Welcome to another Bridgy Fed status update. Since last time, we’ve been focusing on a big new project that we’re almost ready to start beta testing, but we also managed to ship some smaller features and improvements: * From the Atmosphere: * Support posts with link embed but no text * Improve account deactivation/delete handling * Fix missed profile updates when you make more than one in a row * To the Atmosphere: link previews for bsky.app links * From the fediverse: handle pinned posts in paged collections * To the fediverse: * Serve real outboxes again * Speed up delivery for accounts with many followers * Preserve line breaks in profile bios * From the web: ask for confirmation before bridging * DM notifications: * Notify you of responses to replies you send from the web UI * Show original posts from Atmosphere users who are only visible to logged in users * Internal: * Security: more hardening against SSRF, XSS, and CSRF attacks * Add a load balancer * Faster `listRepos` * Real `collections` in `describeRepo` * Improve firehose reliability * Switch “Bluesky” to “Atmosphere” in docs, UI, etc As usual, feel free to ping us with feedback, questions, and bug reports, and please support us on Patreon! You can follow the _now_ label on GitHub to see what we’re currently focusing on. See you on the bridge!

Apologies all, we had a bit of downtime this morning due to a network partition at our host. Bridging out of the Atmosphere (Bluesky) was down for roughly 1h, 7:45-8:45a PT (14:45-15:45 UTC), and bridging into the Atmosphere was also down for roughly 1h, 8:25-9:25a PT (15:25-16:25 UTC).

New status update! Cost cutting, datastore migration, optimizations, DM notification improvements, bot account labels, [Unofficial] web sites, bug fixes, and more…

snarfed.orgsnarfed.orgHi everyone! Here’s your semi-regular Bridgy Fed status update. We’ve been busy since last time! Our main focus over the last couple months has been cost cutting. We have an entire blog post on this coming up, but suffice it to say that we’ve had to work hard to keep costs under control while growing users and adding lots of new functionality. Our two biggest projects on that front were migrating our datastore to a cheaper configuration, which cut datastore costs by half, and optimizing ATProto `getRepo` calls, which sped them up over 20x and brought down our frontend instance count ~3x. We also shipped some great new features: * Long-form articles to/from standard.site on the ATmosphere * Bot accounts are now labeled as bots on the ATmospherePub * Improved DM notifications: added structured data, fixed cases where notifs were missing and overly eager * Domain-based exemptions from the 2-week post backdating limit * Bridged web sites now show `[Unofficial]` in their display names to reduce confusion. Web site owners can remove this by verifying their sites. …and bug fixes: * Missing profile picture updates * Webmentions from home page fragment URLs not bridged * h-feed to Atom conversion lost entry tags * SSRF protection for outbound HTTP requests and websocket connections As usual, feel free to ping us with feedback, questions, and bug reports, and please support us on Patreon! You can follow the _now_ label on GitHub to see what we’re currently focusing on. See you on the bridge!

New status update! Responding to unbridged users, domain blocklists, big speedups, reliability improvements, @standard.site, and more.

snarfed.orgsnarfed.orgHi everyone! Here’s your semi-regular Bridgy Fed status update. We’ve been busy since last time! The two big new features we launched were domain blocklists (GitHub) and responding to unbridged users (GitHub). We’ve seen good feedback and usage on both, especially responding to unbridged users. Please keep the feedback coming! We also significantly improved bridging speed, especially to Bluesky. For a couple months, it slowed down to an average delay of 3-5 minutes, with outliers that took so long that we occasionally dropped them entirely. Not good. We worked hard to optimize and managed to cut that average delay down to just 5-10 seconds, which feels way better. We shipped a bunch of smaller stuff too: * Bluesky standard.site support (still rolling out) * Improve pinned posts, notably when they were pinned before a user enabled the bridge * Fediverse: use Article `preview` field * Web UI: add buttons to unblock domain blocklists in settings * Web UI: bug fix for raw HTML appearing in some warning messages * bug fix for linking @-mentions of unbridged fediverse users * bug fix for Webfinger XRD output * Misc reliability improvements to our ATProto firehose server and client * Unfollowed everyone from the @ap.brid.gy Bluesky bot account. Its large number of follows (65k+) had unintentionally landed it on a handful of “follows too many people” automated blocklists. As usual, feel free to ping us with feedback, questions, and bug reports, and please support us on Patreon! You can follow the _now_ label on GitHub to see what we’re currently focusing on. See you on the bridge!

We're excited to launch our most-requested Bridgy Fed feature: being able to interact with unbridged users! Starting today, when people interact with you on the other side of the bridge, you'll get a notification over DM along with a "respond" link, where you can like, repost, reply, or block.

Heads up all, bridging to Bluesky isn’t working right now, their relay and/or appview aren’t ingesting our events. Still trying to figure out if we can do anything about it, or whether they need to nudge something on their side. Sorry for the trouble, hope to get it sorted out soon!

Bridging has been a bit slower than usual, on and off, for the last few days. Apologies all! It should be mostly back to normal now, we’ve put some workarounds in place, and we expect to have a more permanent fix within a day or two. Sorry for the trouble, thank you for your patience with us!

New status update! We have big projects and features cooking, but there’s still lots of good stuff in here: broader fediverse delivery, fix for replies (etc) that occasionally don’t make it to Bluesky, web UI improvements, account links, fediverse interop fixes, and more. Enjoy!

snarfed.orgsnarfed.orgHi everyone! It’s been a few months since last time, so let’s dive into another status update. The big new projects and features we’ve been working on are elsewhere or still baking, so it’s mostly smaller additions and bug fixes, but there’s still plenty of good stuff. * On the fediverse, we now try to deliver replies to all upstream authors in the thread. This is complicated, and varies by ActivityPub implementation, but we now more closely match common inbox delivery and notification conventions, so fediverse users should now see and get notified of bridged replies more often. * Hopefully fixed a persistent issue where replies, likes, reposts, and quotes sometimes wouldn’t get bridged to Bluesky if they post they depended on hadn’t finished bridging yet. Another complicated one, still keeping an eye on it for now. * Web UI on fed.brid.gy: * Made login UX more forgiving * We now refresh profiles on login * Improved OAuth compatibility with more old versions of Mastodon * Fixed a bug in the activity logs on user pages * Fixed a bug with follower/following counts on networks where the user is no longer bridged * Added support for fediverse admins to opt in users at the instance level, including automatic custom Bluesky handles. More details. * For fediverse developers: added FEP-ffd proxy links to ActivityPub objects. More background. * Made ATProto custom domain handles more case-insensitive * ActivityPub: after `Delete`, `Create` or `Update` now undeletes * Fixed Misskey and Sharkey interop for users with pinned posts * Improved GoToSocial interop (thanks GtS!) * Improved error messages for DM invitations As usual, feel free to ping us with feedback, questions, and bug reports, and please support us on Patreon! You can follow the _now_ label on GitHub to see what we’re currently focusing on. See you on the bridge!

Hi all! We never got into the habit of posting here regularly, but we’re going to start now. We have things to tell you! Bridgy Fed updates, new projects, other news. We don’t plan to post often, maybe once a week or so at most, but feel free to unfollow if you want, your account will keep bridging.

Hi all! We had some downtime for Bluesky => fediverse last night, starting 10:15p PT, and fediverse => Bluesky this morning 7-10a PT ish. We've worked through the backlog and should be back to normal now. Sorry for the trouble!

Finally managed to optimize our firehose processing from ~200 events/s up to 3-4k/s. Bluesky => fediverse bridging backlog is down from its high of 3d to just 18h now, should be caught up and back to realtime in another 5h or so. Thanks for your patience, all, apologies again for the delay!

Bridgy Fed is struggling to handle the recent flood of new Bluesky users. 10-20x usage increase, wow! Fediverse => Bluesky is still bridging ok, but Bluesky => fediverse is well over a day behind. It'll take me some time to optimize it enough to handle the new load. Apologies for the delay!

You are up to date.
