There should be an EGOT for dubious awards. I propose the BIRD: Bulwer-Lytton (writing), Ig Nobel (science), Razzies (film), and Darwin Awards (lifetime achievement)

Does anyone know what this scam is? My wife just got an confirmation email from a Domino's Pizza in New Jersey for a carry-out order for a 2-liter of Sprite. It was sent to her personal email with her full name and cell phone number. We called the store and the CC# used isn't any of ours. WTF?

She's never had a Dominos.com account, we did a forgot password to check. Double-checked our bank/cards, no unusual transactions. We live on the other side of the country. The store didn't seem to know anything.

My best guess is that they're doing automated credit card testing with small transactions, using name/phone/email from an identity breach? But this seems like a terrible way to do it. Why use her email/phone number at all? Baffling.

Today, I wrote about the updates to Supercut.org, my 15-year-old archive of nearly 600 tightly-edited video remixes. While cleaning up dead/deleted videos, I couldn't help but notice how many Vimeo videos are now gone. Things are bad over there and only getting worse since its acquisition last year.

waxy.orgWaxy Refresh: Supercut.org - Waxy.orgContinuing my series of updating old side projects, I gave Supercut.org a big refresh, plus some notes on the sad state of Vimeo.

Last chance! We had a handful of extras from our final XOXO merch run if you missed the original preorders. A few stickers, hats, and pins are all that's left.

Alright, LAST CALL on the FINAL RUN of XOXO merch! Just 5 baseball caps and 1-2 of the year felt pins left then that's it we're done! Nab ‘em before they’re gone for good! xoxofest.com/merch

Watching The Odyssey as Nolan intended: as an AI-upscaled camcorder recording with line-in audio from the theater seat, burned-in Spanish subtitles, and moving blurred patches to hide the forensic digital watermarks.

I'm kidding, of course. I would never watch a movie this epic as a pirated cam on my computer! I'll wait to watch it on my phone during my next long-haul flight.

I wrote about how I discovered that a new site for The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, John Koenig's long-running Tumblr project-turned-book, was a bootleg made by a marketing agency. They published the complete book verbatim, then added AI-generated art and new AI words, entirely without permission.

Waxy.org@waxy.org

Without permission, a marketing agency republished the entirety of John Koenig's Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows book, replacing its art with AI slop and adding new AI words. Their unauthorized site now ranks higher than the real one everywhere.

I confirmed from Koenig himself that he wasn't involved, and found Simon & Schuster issued DMCA takedowns to Google with little effect. The AEO/SEO-optimized site dominates every search related to the book, including the book title and author's name. ChatGPT and Gemini say it's the official site.

There's so much to dislike here, it's hard to know where to start. The "Submit Your Sorrows" feature is particularly galling, in which you describe an emotion or feeling and an AI generates a word, definition, and slop art for it.

I also wrote in this post about something I noticed in my inbox lately: a bunch of polished single-serving sites with italic serif fonts with red accents and tiny all-caps monospaced fonts on a cream background, all from different people who I'm not entirely sure know who I am.

For the fourth time, nominations for this year's Tiny Awards celebrating the "best of the small, poetic, creative, handmade web" are open. https://waxy.org/2026/06/tiny-awards-2026-nominees-are-open

I love this so much. See my reply to Cabel's post if you want to try it yourself!

Here's an easter egg in the new Lego Batman that I think all of you will REALLY appreciate. It's so good, I had to make a video.

Last chance to get the XOXO merch before we shut it down forever!

XOXO@xoxofest.com

Heads up! Today is your last chance to order our limited edition merch, including tees, embroidered sweatshirts, caps, felt and enamel pins, XOXO Lego sets, and our Lower Your Expectations light sign. Don’t miss out! xoxofest.com/merch

This is incredibly charming. I highly recommend using it on desktop, where you have a real cursor.

All these years later, it still feels good to hear people I respect say nice things about the work we did. We tried really, really hard to do things differently and make each festival better than the last.

Rami Ismail (رامي)@ramiismail.com

I will never forget @xoxofest.com, despite only attending once. The vibes were unlike anything, and if anything, it's exactly what US games events miss in 2026. XOXO was focused, it had soul, it was challenging and playful - it was the polar opposite of the giant smooth mega-events games has now.

As someone who only knows how to work really very hard on things, let me tell you, no joke, I worked harder on this than anything I've ever worked on before, including any previous year of the festival. Letting myself feel relieved and proud today 💛

One last thing before we go. Today, after 2+ (or 10+??) years of work, we’re launching XOXO Explore, a complete archive of all eight years of the festival. xoxofest.com

This was a lot of work and we're really proud of it. So proud that we made a bunch of limited-run merch to celebrate. Go check it out!

Ze Frank's The Show was self-hosted QuickTime videos on a blog with comments and an RSS feed. A community forum, wiki, and series of interactive web pages tied it all together. Social media was a bunch of blogs linking to each other.

Facebook opened to everyone in September of that year, Google bought YouTube in November, Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone in January 2007. Twitter blew up at SXSW in March and iPhone came out in June, the beginning of the end for the dominant open social web.

The surprise at the end of Cabel's talk was a personal highlight of 12 years of running XOXO, a secret quietly hiding on stage for the entire festival. Nobody knew what was coming but @cabel.panic.com, @andymcmillan.com, me, and venue/event staff. It was a surprise even to all the other speakers.

over a year ago, i gave a talk at the xoxo conference about a mural, a mcdonald’s, and a man. (but it was also secretly about life, and legacy, and meaning.) finally, i’m blogging the full story, with behind-the-scenes details, and a video of the talk. enjoy. cabel.com/wes-cook-and...

speaking of bad opsec, here's Epstein in 2007 reporting to Yahoo support that his accounts were hacked, revealing his super-strong passwords in the process

Josh Gondelman@joshgondelman.bsky.social

Everyone in these Epstein emails has worse opsec habits while committing heinous sex crimes than my friends do when buying weed, and weed is legal now.
