The effort isn’t some unfortunate tax we pay before producing knowledge. A lot of the knowledge is acquired through the effort itself. If we automate away every difficult part of intellectual work, we may eventually discover that we’ve also automated away the process that makes us experts.

“AI use proliferates in higher education because decades of neoliberal reforms have baked into universities a certain way of thinking, entirely compatible with algorithmic models.”
The commercialisation of universities continues to erode thinking and learning. We should resist corporate automation.
🚨🚨 Schocking betrayal but there it is.

“[…] when I think of new fields in science that have been opened, I don't think of interdisciplinary teams combining existing skills to solve a defined problem—I think of single interdisciplinary people inventing new ways to look at the world.”
I just gave a talk on interdisciplinary yesterday that features a call for interdisciplinary people and not just diverse teams of disciplinary types. Today I read this essay with delight. Viva antedisciplinarity. journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...

The old line that analytic philosophy is answering questions that come naturally to toddlers via methods that come naturally to lawyers remains undefeated.
It is sorta a funny thing about philosophy that the questions are inherently fascinating and exciting—there’s a reason people wind up talking about this stuff in dorm rooms—and the best methods we have for investigating them involve being as tedious and pedantic and boring as possible

I wrote this before the AfD’s victory. It is even more relevant now – especially since early reactions indicate that Germany’s democratic politicians are hellbent on doubling down on these mistakes.

Lots of writing advice is about procrastination or writer’s block.
We worry & develop routines to tackle it.
But what if our problem is the opposite?
What if we write too much? Too many emails, posts, essays, papers.
We have become very good at making ourselves write, perhaps too good.

It is official now: the new UN report finds we'll cross the 1.5 degree warming limit very soon. Now what?
Two months ago we described the range of plausible climate trajectories ahead in this article (open access).
In short: it's like we're stuck in quicksand, where only an active pull can free us.
We are in the Age of Humans - the Anthropocene.
Our new article (open access) shows how even with a moderate future emissions scenario, global temperature will still be elevated by 3-4°C in the year 3000!
Lifetime of our CO2 in the air is that long.

This incident needs to be thoroughly investigated. If true, no public office in the EU or any member state can continue to run any microsoft products.

Philosophers often bring up the "principle of charity": a willingness to assume good faith in an interlocutor and treat them accordingly. It's good to do in many circumstances. But it is worth formulating a principle of not being a fucking mark. If not during the rise of fascism, then when? 12/
