A 28-year old dude, one who was utterly clueless about global health and development, took evil, callous actions that contributed to the deaths of 500,000 kids within one year of gutting USAID

Katie Drummond@katie-drummond.bsky.social

NEW: The DOGE operative who gutted USAID -- firing thousands of employees and canceling lifesaving programs -- never actually signed the paperwork that's legally required for him to be employed by the agency.

Excited to share my graduate research! Schwann cells are primarily known for their role as myelinating glia, but we examined the development and function of their other form: Remak bundles! Thank you to Jonah, all our collaborators, and all the Chan lab members for their support.

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

Excess heat deaths are growing. Imagine 50,000 deaths across Europe caused by a state's actions, like a war? Well, State-owned and para-statal (government-controlled) oil and gas firms are among the biggest emitters.

Our newest preprint is out! 🥳 Neuroscientists and rheumatologists - this one is for you! I'm also delighted that we seem to have finally found a single molecule apparently capable of inducing peripheral sensitization in cultured neurons - in the absence of any other supporting cells.

Check out Ali’s new work on changes in the human DRG associated with opioid use disorder. Some really remarkable findings with important implications for thinking about OUD treatment (if you ask me).

Also, unlike mice, human SGCs express OPRK1. This has been reported before by the Iadarola Lab, which we were able to validate across a few different methods. It probably matters.

This work would not have been possible without our NIH funding or the STA & our incredible team of surgeons. From our organ donors & families to everyone who contributed stories of dependency and withdrawal through published research interviews and written personal accounts - thank you.

Opioid withdrawal is known to be painful, and documented reports of "joint pain" and "rheumatism" during withdrawal date back ~500 years. We speculate that a peripheral inflammatory state contributes to this.

Previous work has also show changes in neuroimmune signalling in the CNS of mice and humans with chronic opioid use... we are extending this to the human PNS

Sensory ganglia recovered from organ donors with OUD showed disrupted glial & immune signalling across omics, with electrophysiology suggesting the nociceptors from these donors are functionally sensitized 🧬🔬

Very happy to have played a tiny role in the project. What started as a snATAC-seq pilot of injured sensory neurons during my PhD has turned into so much more.

There’s also a simple question that I think is a very important one GDP/capita, 2025: Denmark—$76,970 Guinea-Bissau—$1,124 Why are white Danish researchers flying into one of the most resource-poor nations on earth to do a study that withholds a life-saving intervention from half of babies?
