We've had a lot of issues and PRs around updates - events, new videos, changelog, and more. I tried to bring all that together in the newsletter. ♥️ Let me know what you think and if you have ideas for March! ✨

Has anyone noticed slow downs in Rspec test suite when upgrading from Ruby 3.4 to 4.0 ? Our test suits with 4.0 is 2x slower than 3.4 We have no changes beside the Ruby version to upgrade to 4.0

Happy New Year! 🎉 2025 was an incredible year for Ruby Events around the world and also for the @rubyevents.org platform! To celebrate, we're releasing RubyEvents Wrapped! A look back at talks, events, speakers, sponsors, and the Ruby community's year!

Dear gem maintainers 👋 Rails 8.1 just dropped, but many gems can’t be used because of overly strict gemspec constraints. Please don’t hard-restrict Rails versions, let us test early and report real issues sooner! ❤️ Thanks

I agree and even more so: what if the problem is us, the Ruby community, not contributing to our key nonprofit enough? We did not have ownership because we didn’t show up, and RC ended up being squeezed by a big donor because they did not have enough sponsors, stability and support.

I waste way too much time binging random crap on Youtube. If I need downtime, I might just as well watch something useful, right? I think I found a hack to help with that. Now I just redirect to RubyEvents and watch some talk 😅 #ruby

I just released Herb v0.4.3! 🎉 It's been another super productive week for Herb! This week I mostly focused on improving the formatter and fixing bugs in general! It's starting to take shape and feels great to use! I really love where this is going! ❤️

I would like to improve the user experience on RubyEvents for watching content. What would be the killers features for you to make it your default viewing platform. Please comment with what ever ideas you might have everything is always valuable

As announced at RubyKaigi today, I've been working on a new HTML-Aware ERB Parser that I just released today. Introducing Herb — a fast, modern, and HTML-aware ERB parser, designed from the ground up for smarter developer tooling. #rubykaigi #rubykaigi2025

It is now live in prod will get a look tomorrow at @appsignal.com to see if we had any free performance improvements 😋

RubyVideo was successfully deployed to staging with rc1 and I will promote this to prod as soon as github action setup-ruby is updated. Not issues at all from what I could see 👏

Ok this wasn't expected... I removed spring from my main app. We got to a point where our boot is much faster thanks to Rails 8 and some optimisations, so spring wasn't worth anymore. Unexpected consequence our CI on Github went from about 10min down to 7min 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯. don't ask me WHY

Ruby 3.4.0-rc1 is out! github.com/ruby/ruby/re... github.com/rbenv/ruby-b... I'm working to keep stability of new release now. Please build and run your code with 3.4.0-rc1. If you faced issues, please file it to bugs.ruby-lang.org. #ruby

Is it just me, or is something off here? By default, the Rails console uses IRB. But if I add a gem that depends on Pry, the Rails console switches to Pry, and reload! breaks. How can I ensure the Rails console always sticks to its default (IRB)? Feels like I'm missing something!

I started to build the cmd+k global search feature on RubyVideo. A mix of Sqlite FT search + Hotwire. They are a few UI/UX things to polish, but I think it starts to look nice. You can check the current prototype at staging.rubyvideo.dev Feedback welcome WIP PR : github.com/adrienpoly/r...

😍🎉 This feels like magic. Looks like I am down to 1 min on a warm cache. Will try now to update a gem

Got it, it was the two lines after setting up docker buildx. As far as I understood it, without them the GHA cache actually is not used for docker builds caching in Kamal. I originally found this trick here: jetthoughts.com/blog/automat...

rubyvideo.dev has a GitHub action to deploy with Kamal. On a warm cache it takes about 5min to build and deploy. On a cold cache it can take up to 25min. I know GitHub runners are slow, but are those numbers normal ? If you have some ideas of improvements github.com/adrienpoly/r...
