Hi, new followers! Someone else did a "happy Pride, all my books are gay!" thread and now I want to do it too. First up is IGNORE ALL PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS, just out this May. A sapphic cis woman and a trans space pirate team up to fight genAI, book bans, and censorship. Super queer and super fun!

Beauty and the Beast for my 4th birthday in *checks notes* 1991. Yes, the Disney one. I did not have a good time, unfortunately. It was too big and loud and I was too autistic.

Warren Frey🇨🇦@freyburg.bsky.social

Star Wars, 1977, the Odeon Theatre in downtown Edmonton. Six years old and forever changed.

"How did you get into TTRPGs?" Well, at one point I was a small child just hanging out on the floor in my dad's study and I found a box that said "GURPS" and I was like "That is so silly, what are GURPs?" and he explained

Ninja missed me so much. She had a good pet sitter but it's not the same. She was climbing all over me and purring for most of the night and now she's on my home office desk purring while I drink my morning coffee

Moar Can*Con. Actually it's finished now and I am waiting for my taxi. I did not in fact have spoons for the all night write in (or the dance party) but nevertheless this may in fact have been my best con ever

I am doing MORE STUFF at this con than I usually let myself do which, on the one hand, is amazing but on the other hand, wow my brain is spinning like a tilt a whirl

I ordered carpaccio from the bougie hotel bar not really knowing what it was and then rolled it up and ate it between pieces of crostini like a sandwich because it looked like fancy sandwich meat. I am a little bit surprised that they didn't kick me out of the hotel bar

When I first heard that there was rock music in The Magician's Nephew, I was like, "Ok, that's a bit weird, but Greta Gerwig's use of music in 'Barbie' was so on point - I bet she could pull it off." Now that I've seen the trailer, I absolutely get what it is doing there and think it is cool.

Like, it's anachronistic on purpose? Because it's signaling that we've gone to another world. It's music of a type that the characters have never heard before *because* they are suddenly encountering cool and awesome things that they've never heard of before. It makes total sense actually.

Sometimes a turn of phrase just comes to me partway through drafting (or, rarely, at the very beginning - like with the short story "The Mother of All Squid Builds a Library") Other times I just find some words/phrases that have to do with the theme of the story and bonk them together for a while.

How do you go about titling your works? Is it a line? A format you like? Etc #WritingPrompt

Fun fact that I was already dreaming of writing sequels to THE OUTSIDE before it sold, so I originally had FALSE GODS-style names in mind for the sequels too (FALLEN ANGELS and FINAL JUDGMENT, for that F-theme) but then had to change them so they would stylistically match THE OUTSIDE. :P

Titles can also change! THE OUTSIDE was originally called FALSE GODS but Angry Robot already had a similar GODS title so we went back and forth and brainstormed until we had one we could all agree on. Similarly, THE PRIEST OF CRAWLING THINGS used to have the working title MOTHER DRAGON.

IGNORE ALL PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS, on the other hand, was my original title idea. It had the working title SPACE CRIMES for a while but I knew that wasn't actually the title I wanted it released under. As soon as I visualized the IGNORE title on a paper book, I knew I had a winner.

Finally saw the PM announcement so I can announce this to people!!

(For the record, if I did change my pen name to sound less feminine, I would not change it to "Ad." I have, at times, seriously considered "Adam" but it turns out that there are a couple very questionable Adam Hoffmans who already exist, so)

My understanding is that Hannah is still talking to Publisher's Marketplace to try to get the spelling of my name corrected. I'm used to people forgetting the second N in "Hoffmann," but being "Ad" instead of "Ada" is a new one 😂

Not also that although it says "Canada Fiction," Wolsak & Wynn is buying first North American rights, and Recorded Books is buying audio rights which will apply worldwide.

Hey Bluesky, help me make a silly decision. I (a) really like the idea of going to the all night write-in at Can*Con but also (b) am an easily tired middle aged morning person who is often in bed by 9 (& has to be back at work at a busy job the day after the con.) Should I do the thing, or

Apparently Canva isn't useful anymore unless you want AI all over everything (why do I always wait to adopt tech until right before it does something like this?) so I have simply created this promo graphic in PowerPoint (Also, hi! See you in a few weeks at Can*Con, if you are going!)

All I'm going to say is I've been watching a lot of James Bond movies lately, so this strategy of "Give us a trillion dollars so our product doesn't destroy humanity!" feels, shall we say, familiar

The question, which was reportedly intended to be rhetorical, was answered in harrowing detail by Sabeen Bhatt, 46, who began by describing every possible calamity in her immediate surroundings, before moving on to the world at large.

Just absolutely wild to see so many people discovering the massive influence of the rationalists in real time and say things like "I wish I could unlearn what I've learned in the last 24 hours." I, and others, have been researching these people for YEARS. There is so much I wish I could unlearn.

Anyone want to rec a SFF book/story that depicts a process of restorative justice (or any of the other types of non-carceral justice) actually working? Especially if the world of the book is built such that restorative justice processes are the norm (as opposed to a new, controversial thing)

Usually people is like "don't have the characters just say how they feel! real people don't talk that way!" and I say they have never met an autistic person HOWEVER I am now discovering that if you do let them be reluctant to say how they feel then this can make a scene 10x more delightfully awkward

I think she (using the pronoun advisedly b/c I was an egg back then) would be very impressed by most of it, somewhat disappointed by other parts, but also just... baffled. Like, by 20 y/o me's standards, my 38 y/o life is just so weird and outré.
