Happy Subway Day! On this day in 1904, we took our very first ride from City Hall to 145 St. 122 years later, the subway continues to move the city that never sleeps. To celebrate, we've put together a thread of subway trivia 🤔🚇

You know, what? Yes, I have wondered that!!

From the political perspective: they would prefer to keep transit as a make-work jobs program and that's why we're the only subway system with two crew on almost every train. They're also the big reason why it took so long to end carriage horse rides.

From the former member perspective: the deals they negotiated for office workers sucked and I was told to go fuck myself when I made my feelings politely known.

For someone who lives far from the east coast, can you say more about why this union is so awful?

It’s time to shove OPTO down their throats. The TWU rank-and-file shouldn’t empower anti-labor right wing chuds.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

TWU be like “Hochul is MAGA because she doesn’t support our MAGA union” in reality, they’re just mad at Hochul because she refused to expand the union’s expensive handouts and make-work jobs funded with taxpayer $$

It says a lot that they explicitly consider bus operators showing up to work during an unrelated rail strike to be scabs.

Yeah TBH I think the left needs to crush John Samuelson's mob as a lesson for what happens to chud unions that defect.

soooooo which one of these four are the anti-semites?

about twenty five people showed up in front of Brooklyn's best public transit station, to protest better transit yesterday. big "we demand to be taken seriously" energy.

So, this is still going on. If you can evade being caught on-the-scene, it is perfectly legal in New York City to ram someone with a car. The police will treat you, the victim, like you're a pain in the ass.

look, I understand why people blindly believe "cars will make everything better", but when they show up with AI-generated signs, protesting street safety projects being enacted because PEOPLE DIED, I can't take them seriously.

Not surprising that the overlap between the group trying to pull off an illegal coup in the Brooklyn Dem Party and the group trying to stop any sensible transit projects is huge.

It’s difficult to remember that social media comments can say anything & it doesn’t get adopted by anyone typically, but some of these declarations do percolate up to electeds who take them as fact so I wouldn’t let them go fully unchallenged either

Just braindead nonsense.

Ultimately this is my problem with car people. They only see scenarios in which they suffer zero inconvenience as worthy compromises. They will never give up anything of value to anyone else. And they think this makes them the heroes.

At least they finally said what they’re protesting after prodding by @brooklynspoke.bsky.social. Never mind that DOT presented the Flatbush plans over and over again. Compromise to these people - who admit to driving everywhere - just means getting what they want. www.instagram.com/p/De2hqSSo6l...

This road project is a conspiracy funded by Uber vs. this road project is unfair to people who ride Ubers. People opposed to bus and bike lanes can’t get their story straight.

Wow a photo of the southwest corner of 91st and Broadway that predates Barzini's (RIP, you were disgusting).

#DidYouKnow there was once a 91 Street Station on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line (today's 1 line)? Taken just two years before the station was closed, this #NYTMCollection image from 1957 shows the 91 Street Station’s southbound entrance at the northwest corner of 91st Street and Broadway.

I grew up on the NE corner of 91st and Broadway so this station's always had a place in my heart. The access grates are still on the sidewalk on both sides of the street.

The folks who were going to protest the Bergen St. bike boulevard and bus redesign on Thursday are now doing it on Saturday morning. The white women organizing this have coopted BLM imagery, and they've dropped the fact that they're protesting against "fast buses" from some versions of the flyer.

This woman lives next to the 31st St. bike lane in Astoria and has a TikTok schtick where she takes videos of it without cyclists, but there are always vehicles illegally parked in it so half the video is her trying to preempt commenters pointing that out with false assertions that it’s allowed

Anyone labeling themselves as a "native New Yorker" on TikTok is definitely someone you can dismiss as a crank out of hand.

One of the reasons Transportation Alternatives conspiracy theories spread is because there are diminishingly few local news sources in NYC and people have rotted their brains on TikTok and Reels bsky.app/profile/gwyn...

The old version literally said stop fast buses. Anyway, very disappointing to see El Gran Castillo De Jagua add their name to this effort too.

Meantime, the Transport Workers Union says it will sue the city to block the horse carriage ban if the bill passes tomorrow (as is expected). The union says the bill would violate state and federal laws, including the Fifth Amendment's takings clause.
