"They downloaded adult content, they're a kids company" Why do you care man, it could be filtered, or they could be making a model independently from the game. Not everything they do has to be for kids.

NUANCE NOTE: When I mean attribution ought to be a best-effort thing, I don't mean that it ought to be ignored, or that people ought to claim credit for something other people did (plagiarism).

What I mean is that, (1) if you didn't make something, say so, (2) to the genuine best of your ability, credit where it came from, but it shouldn't be a legal requirement, and (3) it ought not to apply to learning (both biological and machine), unless it's overfit to a singular entity's work

There's another anti-AI-ish post on HN, the one where some Debian developers complaining about LLM reviews. I'm actually not that angry about that one, it mainly seems to be a failure of communication (not doing consultation regarding internal processes), not hypocrisy involving copyright.

Still though, lesson learnt (again) to hide stuff that makes me angry or is meant to make me angry.

"The scrapers saturated our bandwidth" And there's your one valid gripe. You should have just stuck with that, though.

"There's a two tier system now, Aaron Swartz and Anna's Archive got hit" It only seems two-tier if you completely ignore how legally transformative machine learning is. You mentioned those who redistributed IP, but you forgot that Anthropic did get hit for piracy. Which is distinct from training.

"For now, attribute and respect licenses" If you mean non-free licenses, no. That's incompatible with copyright abolition. Attribution ought to be a polite, best effort thing too. It makes no sense to distribute a model file that attributes literally everyone (This is why my posts are public domain)

"Some creators chose non-commercial licenses" And those are not open licenses, regardless of what Creative Commons says. It is not free culture. I find it moral to break those licenses.

"We actually dislike copyright law too, and wouldn't mourn it if it was abolished" With you asking to respect copyright licenses *with non-free restrictions*, it doesn't really seem like you dislike copyright law.

it's not enough to just have cameras and guards everywhere they have to insult u with the stupidest gaslighting imaginable. "this is for you actually, it's to improve your shopping experience, you love it, we wouldn't be surveilling you if it didn't make your experience so much better :) say thanks"

[ #Octransfur Day 26] - Written Gwen owns a cursed book that is bound to their soul, in it is an exact description of them, and anything written in it is ALWAYS true. Better not let anyone get their hands on it!~ #transformation #tfsky #tfeveryday #pokemon #transfur #mermaid #anthro

The phrase "ethically trained model" assumes a premise of copyright maximalism, that copyright owners not only have a right to control copies of their work, but also control how others can learn from their work, for a hundred years. I don't think that's ethical at all.

Models from the EU also tend to use the phrase "ethically trained". However, that usually just means they respect opt-outs, which I don't think copyright maximalists are happy with (they want opt-in). So I find that ironic.

A news article about Rockstar Game's union demands said "no AI, no layoffs, no crunch". But the "no AI" part of the headlines is over-claimed. Instead, they demanded that no employee should be replaced by AI. I think that's a lot more nuanced, and a lot more agreeable than the headline first implies

Me, to Claude Code: “I have a friend coming over. Modify Pac-Man to support a horizontal display with two player co-op, where player 2 is Ms. Pac-Man. Make one button be a speed boost. My Mistercade cabinet is at 192.168.1.102” Claude, two hours later: “The game is loaded up and ready to play”

being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

The PineTime's low price (~30USD) and phenomenal battery life (around 14 days) make it an excellent choice for users who just want a simple, hackable smartwatch with notification support. Think of it more like a smart CASIO watch than an Apple Watch. It only has 64KiB RAM!

It's not full immersion if you remember you have a body and self outside of the game. It's not full immersion if you remember the language you spoke before

I don't think it's a coincidence that the further down the privilege ladder you go from American middle class the attitude towards AI improves. A tech that lets a Zimbabwean teenager compete with a 40 something American suburbanite knowledge worker is going to test a lot of people's progressivism.

AI can produce slop (fucking stop it!). It can also be an accessibility tool for non-native speakers and neurodivergent people. If you reject everything AI touches without reckoning with that, you should know how privileged and exclusionary you come across.
