Dogs aren't allowed to just run around by themselves, even ones wearing collars. If they are by themselves they are by definition stray. So animal control picks them up and detains them until they can get in touch with the owner.

$$$ Pet strays are easier to catch & shelter is assured $$ from owners when they come to bail them out. If you're in an urban area different shelters can have pick up areas crossing what we think of boundaries do check every one in dog running areas

We have a neighborhood escape artist. Her humans brought her to a block party to say "here she is when she's behaving, her name is Aspen but she won't respond bc she's deaf, she lives in that house", all that, before returning her home. Aspen reappeared at the party 10 minutes later.

I had to put new door handle and lock on my front door because my Plott hound figured out how to unlock the deadbolt, push down the lever, and pull open the front door. And he could do it in about 10 seconds. I still catch him occasionally staring at the round knob handle that’s now on the door.

Had a husky who could open doors ended up in doggy jail 4 times one year the last time I went to pick him up a staff member said he's really smart huh? Really bad huh? I agreed. Anyway he escaped the cage ran into the main lobby someone was bringing in a rabbit and he killed it!

Probably why he was out running around in the first place! And it’s probably not his first breakout!😂🤣

in his native language the name Rufus means: ‘ha ha ha *snort* ha ha ha…’ “This is Rufus. He cleverly escaped the shelter to run home after being picked up by animal control as a presumed stray. 14/10 a hound Houdini”

I grew up with Dogs, now I have a cat from last 5 years... Animals have realised it's a humans world, so they co-operate... but if they want to escape their Brain will make them smart... Love the Animal Kingdom... Humans will not survive without animals

Oh my god, this is where I used to live! Please consider supporting the Huntington Cabell-Wayne Animal Shelter - they're fighting to stay no-kill after the city slashed their budget practically in half. (They call him Dawson on their website because that was his shelter name.) hcwanimalshelter.com

My dog Abby did something like this when she had to stay overnight at the vet. Got out of the cage and tore the door off between the cage room and the waiting room. She was sitting at the front door when the staff showed up. I was mortified but they thought it was funny. She wasn’t big either lol.

We had a dog like this but he started as a junk yard dog and would evade capture. Sometimes he would go visit the garbage cans along the beach. Sometimes if he thought we might leave, he would jump into our car, and hide in the back seat. We gave in and simply took him everywhere. He was the best.
