Y’all, what’s it gonna take to get more of you on @grain.social? Even beyond the generally very high quality of the images being posted, the app is just gorgeous. Fucking nailed it, @chadtmiller.com. ❤️ #atproto

I think part of the problem may be how professional it looks, no joke lmao I've been thinking I'd like an atproto place where I could post the kind of image-based posts I made in Instagram (some not even photos) and grain doesn't feel an appropriate space for that

Yeah, I totally get that. I'm deffo feeling a bit of imposter syndrome posting my random shots on there, but I think that's all it is! There's nothing discouraging such posts. 🥰

Grain? Hmm... maybe just because it's new? I mean it's old in atproto terms, but new as far as things on the internet. Google and Twitter were pretty hard to remember at one point, too. 😉

I mean, is the goal photographers or mass appeal? Very different directions and it’s already leaning one specific direction in both users and features

definitely had been my experience too, and now seems to have been confirmed that's the intent in the thread

I mean wasn't that initial intent of instagram? I think gearing it towards photography helps keep out all the other junk like memes, photos of twitter posts, etc you find on instagram nowadays. Trying to target anyone with a camera really and that includes the one that's always in your pocket

sure! And also that other “junk” is what is interesting about Instagram to most people. Everyone’s a photographer, but not everyone cares about photography.

Honestly? No idea. @chadtmiller.com could answer. It deffo feels like it’s geared more towards photogs, but the line between photog and guy with an iPhone is so blurry these days I’m not sure it makes that much of a difference.

I just want more friends over there liking enjoying the photo stories I’m starting to post. 🥰

here's the reasons I don't think it's taken off: - the app icon is too dark, and not recognizable enough - there's no tutorial when you first log in. I would want to see something explaining how the app is intended to be used to see if this is the app for me - it's VERY geared toward photography-

not just that you CAN use it that way. if your intention is to get mass adoption, I think the app should allow for either "professional" or "casual" mode. casual is more like Insta, professional is more like photography. - the first time I tried to log in after downloading it failed, I had to-

reopen the app and click sign in again, and then it worked without having to actually go through the OAuth flow again

trying to follow bsky patterns as much as possible. there's moderation labels and you can self label a gallery. still need to add preferences so you can choose to filter out adult content or not

I don't think I know anyone who posts there, and I don't really post photos myself (never did on Instagram either) (maybe I should get into it). @grain.social an option to find my Bluesky follows who are also on Grain would be super useful. I'm sure there must be some but no idea who.
