On paper a trade war between the US and Canada should be much harder on the northern country. But one country’s political economy can sustain the major costs of a trade war and the other’s cannot.

Totally, and it's the smaller businesses and workers in Canada who'd take the brunt—80% of Canadian exports go to the US. Losing that market isn't just numbers, it's thousands of livelihoods.

There is a broad and durable political coalition in Canada to stand up to Trump. The political coalition for hammering Canada with tariffs in the US is basically confined to a few Twitter posters.

That coalition survived their civil war and has reconstructed after every setback since. I don't think we'll see the end of it, but it would be nice if was outnumbered again and shamed into yet another name change.

Canada needs to join the EU and take Britain's spot since the Brit's didn't want it. Yes, I know they aren't in Europe. But clever diplomats can make it happen in every meaningful way but name such that they function as part of the EU for trade and visa/travel purposes.

A consistent tendency of Trump, especially in his second term, is to have a strong hand and try to bluff everyone into thinking it’s an unbeatable hand

It's weird to put it this way but it helps that this is an existential threat from our point of view too. Yes it's about keeping good jobs and keeping prices low but it's also about Canada continuing to exist as a sovereign nation and that part of it is a lot more important to us.
