After locking their products up in cases and eliminating DEI programs to appease the Trump administration, Target has been steadily losing customers and sales. The CEO says he’s going to stop the decline by using “technology and AI” to become “more agile.” Target is in big trouble.

The CEO then went to say "We believe by becoming more agile through cutting edge technology we can circle back to blast processing our way through these troubled times with innovative and breathtaking new customer-driven experiences" before bending 180 degrees to start sucking himself off.

I'm convinced that business school makes their graduates stupider. Like Starving Martian Brainsucker stupid. But then again, destroying successful companies and having them become hollowed out brands that consumers hate is apparently profitable to private equity so...whatever.

If you’re going to lock everything up, you need to hire a ton more employees to open the cabinets. (Also, if they hired more employees they’d have less of a shoplifting problem in the first place.)

I MEAN. And the one thing I needed (cheap advil) was locked in a cabinet with a sign that said to use the call button to open it… and there was NO BUTTON. Had visions of wild bands of customers hunting for employees to capture…

I'm just going to insert that one of the most shoplifted items in the U.S. is baby formula. Another category of high theft items are women's sanitary products. Menstrual products, baby food, and pain relievers, three products that any just society would provide at no cost to anyone who needs them.

I am literally an expert in Agile software development and I can tell you 100% of the time, when leaders say “we’re going to be more agile” they are cooked beyond cooked. 💀

It's because being agile is good and sounds good. However CEO's are generally MBA holders. That means they have no idea how to do anything but "value extraction" and "asset protection." Both things lead to eventual bankruptcy, but I admit Target's CEO is innovating new ways to hit the bottom fast.

I live in the Twin Cities, the birthplace of Target. For literally decades, I shopped there regularly. That all ended when they caved to Trump on DEI. They are now second behind Tesla on my list of businesses I would like to see disappear. (Or maybe third behind Amazon)

A decade or so, Target was genuinely beloved. People referred to it as TarZHAY (fake French) because the fashions were good. Going to Target was fun because the products were well-chosen and pretty. Not a problem AI can fix. "Racism is cool now" also not a great selling point.

If you’ve been in a Target in the last year or so it’s like they’re openly hostile to the few customers they still have Many products locked behind glass, then checkout lines stretching halfway down the store because there are no cashiers and only 4 self checkouts open Miserable experience

Let me fix that quote a bit : The CEO says he's going to accelerate the decline by being a dumbass and making things worse for customers and employees.

You know, like for data and stuff! Probably trying to better (umm) target shoppers with ads, coupons, etc. for things they’re more likely to buy, I guess. Really nothing new about that. Honestly be probably doesn’t know either.

Unless AI is going to start purchasing seasonal throw pillows for their non-existent apartments, athleisure wear for their non-existent bodies, and curling irons for their non-existent hair, I don't see how tech is going to dig them out of their nobody-wants-to-shop-here hole.

Funny part is Target already had very powerful data collection and analysis. The reason why target is failing is because they are not playing to their customers. White women in their 30s don't like what they're doing because it's making the experience worse.

CEOs just seem to think you can just become the brand that everyone shops at and ignore that unless you provide a good reason to do that nobody is gonna change their current shopping habits

They fired all QA years ago and now they're telling the engineers that they need to use AI to be 2-3x productive and that there are hiring freezes...meanwhile the engineers are all overworked and spiraling, creating a culture of rubber stamp push to prod slop. Adding AI is pouring gasoline on top.

i mean. they could lower prices, take shit out of display cases, and bring back dei.. “nahh, ai will solve this” -every out of touch business person. i walk through target to the cvs pharmacy. i haven’t given them money since early last year.

Former Target employee here. They could not give LESS of a damn about their workers. They are no different from any other corporation, willing to exploit, break down, and even put us in direct danger just to make a quick profit, even if it means breaking the law. May they go bankrupt ❤️

A good start would be actually staffing their stores so they don’t feel like dirty and poorly stocked ghost towns, raising wages so staff is happy and supported, and firing all the overpaid toolboxes at Target HQ who screwed up such a beloved company over the last decade.

I stopped shopping at Target because their shelves were always only half stocked and they only had one cashier while expecting everyone to self-checkout. If I'm spending my money, you must have products and cashiers. Don't expect me to do the work of your employees.

Or, or, hear me out, you could reinstate the programs, publicly apologize, and make a *substantial* organizational and financial commitment to the people you marginalized and hurt like many beloved brands do. But this is why I'm not a C-level. Non velocimetric six sigma day 1 agile alpha thinking.
