The doctor who claimed that vaccines cause autism lost his medical license for faking for the study. But his lies and the damage he did to public health persist long after his paper was pulled. This is why science communication is so difficult; all it takes is one grifter.

What's most infuriating to me: he faked it because he wanted to keep selling his own, inferior vaccine. The anti-vaxers have embraced someone who is a caricature of the cartoonishly evil version of Big Pharma they all complain about.

I keep saying this is the only answer to combatting disinformation. There will always be grifters. Instead of trying to play whack a mole with them, educate the populace to recognize them.

Do you have a link to it ? .. the notion "giving 3 vaccines at once is bad " sounds plausible, & big pharm & governments would have leveraged against Wakefield even if he had been right, with the same outcome. So I would like to learn about the flaws.

It's worth remembering that he only ran, manipulated, and published the study because he was trying to sell an alternative vaccine combination, and not doing well. We remember to follow the money, right?

RFK Jr stepped up to be that grifter. No knowledge of science, many questionable life choices, serial cheater, liar, substance use disorder, dumb as dirt, and just playing off his famous name. He’s done so much harm to US public health. It will take many years, if not decades, to fix all of this.

Interesting! The perpetrator of misinformation, from which he benefited financially, Andrew "Wakefield left the UK and moved to Texas, where, in 2005, he co-founded Thoughtful House Centre for Children, a quack clinic in which he served as Medical Director. sciencebasedmedicine.org/andrew-wakef...

sciencebasedmedicine.orgAndrew Wakefield after 25 years: Paving the way for COVID-19 quacks and antivaxxersIt was 25 years ago yesterday that Andrew Wakefield launched the modern iteration of the antivaccine movement. In doing so, he laid down a template that antivax quacks today still follow.

The story gets weirder the more you look at it. The original study had virtually more authors than cases. How is that publishable in a top medical journal? Statistical significance isn't just a matter of opinion. The fact that the inadequate data was faked is just the icing on the cake really.

We have a powerful fascist machine working to make us sick, weak and broke. We’re being poisoned by food-borne illnesses, losing our means to afford healthcare, and being fed insane medical advice. The institutions that protected us are gone, destroyed. There’s nothing normal here.

My sons had only the first MMR, I don't think the second was offered. It was about that time when Wakefield's study was being accepted. The elder then developed mumps, not nice for a teenage boy. Out doctor told me to quickly get the younger his second shot & he escaped infection.

It really is surprising that misinformation from so long ago can continue to circulate, especially after the study was discredited. It’s a good reminder of how important it is to look at the evidence and reliable medical sources rather than letting old claims keep getting repeated.

Sadly, that’s so true. Misinformation can spread in seconds, while correcting it takes time, evidence, and patience. That’s why it’s so important to pause, verify the facts, and think before sharing.

Brandolini’s Law: the amount of energy needed to refute nonsense is an order of magnitude bigger than what it takes to produce it. Sadly, misinformation often gets a head start.

We lack sufficiently effective legislation to hold such malefactors accountable for harming people. The First Amendment has no place in defense of their crimes against humanity. For direction, we must explore how advanced nations protect their populations.

I agree that people who knowingly cause serious harm should be held accountable. At the same time, protecting the public and preserving free speech aren’t necessarily opposing goals.

Too many people have no idea that science is a process, not a series of proclamations of Truth. Studies get discredited all the time, or are eventually outdated. This is the strength of it, not a weakness!

Exactly. That ability to question, test, revise, and even reject previous conclusions is what makes science so powerful. Changing our understanding when better evidence comes along isn’t a failure of science, it’s one of its greatest strengths.

In this Wakefield case the data was a fabricated fiction (a fraud). Unlike homeopathic studies that assumed a lifestyle was healthy and naively added bias. Worth understanding the flaw in the method. Studies now try to change exactly one thing. Study placebos as they are a thing important to study.

Yes - one grifter, one president who doesn’t know what he’s talking about amplifying the lie, and one HHS director who is equally as unfit as the president, obsessed with the same lie due to never having had a medical education (and having a destructive streak).

Republicans lie about everything, then create bullshit to support their viewpont; GOP's conservative propaganda quickly picks up the lie and spreads it as "truth". Thank God most of us aren't as stupid as Republicans want us to be.

The ultimate bug in the human OS: we’re designed to prioritize a scary story over a boring truth, even when the story is a 404. Deleting the source code doesn't clear the cache.

It wouldn't be so bad if not for RFK Jr. and Trump doing what they're doing. bsky.app/profile/did:...

This is the gov we get when most media/SMedia are Right Wing propaganda outlets that lie to get GOP votes for dumb authoritarian con artists--because those con artists cater to the desires of the wealthy GOP media owners. As long at T/GOP cater to their desires, they don't care what else they do.

Obviously vaccines do not cause autism, but some people making uninformed claims is NOT justification for doing so ourselves. If you think the Wakefield paper stated vaccines cause autism, or that one paper is the basis for parental concern about vaccines, you are mis- or uninformed yourself.

I shared this on my FB and the grammar police arrested it, completely missing the message.'.. Well the level of grammar shows up the level of education. Dr Wakefield did not fake the evidence. The paper was retracted due to the pressure from the Pharmaceutical Company.' (Rod hinds, with thai bride)

Why would anyone throw away their career for this. He's faking shit, so he knows it's bs. Why not just keep your practice and license and do you job and have a pretty decent life.

I’m not defending his actions. But, you asked the question so…doctors are getting screwed. The money is shit compared to what we’re expected to do. And, we don’t actually start making shit money until we’re 35. So, fuck retirement. I’ll work until I’m dead or until the work kills me. Great.

Without science, based on truth via evidence and verification, you have ,,, uh, what we're living in now! I remember Carl Sagan warning that we might be entering a new Dark Age. Where belief supersedes truth. Well?

Though they should have stripped his medical licence off him that's not how Wakefield lost it. He had his medical licence stripped for performing dangerous surgical procedures he wasn't qualified to do on autistic children without notifying the hospital he was performing them in.

He nearly killed two of the kids and the anesthetist - who had been told permission had been obtained - reported him to the head of surgery. He should have been jailed for doing this but wasn't. Instead he bolted to America and became a lobbyist. The man is scum. He has indirectly killed hundreds...

Plus a willing white wing media to spread the lies and when proven false dont retract just move to the next lie Fyi 40 years ago Iran a county 90 million started stock piling missiles for this day. They are not second rate. Everybody knows it. Thats why Israel pushed Trump because hes stupid!

The UK doesn't have a ban on cruel and unusual punishment, so they really missed a great opportunity there. Maybe go old school and give him the Guy Fawkes treatment. On second thought, it's never too late to make a point...

He was one of ours but the UK stripped him of his medical licence. He had developed a useless version of the vaccine that he was trying to sell to the National Health Service and decided that scaring parents off the existing vaccine was the way to go. We thought that was the end of him, but no.

Perpetrators include architects of a half-century of violation of trust in professional journalism. Growing up in a time when some papers were liberal, some were conservative, some were financial & some were supermarket rags gave a foundation that intentionally deceptive Fox et al destroyed.

I didn’t know the doctor who claimed that vaccines caused autism lost his medical license because of his faked study. We should all know that and it should be the first thing we quickly say to anyone who tries to bring it up to us as a thing.

that would apply to most of congress and senate as well who pass laws while knowing absolutely NOTHING about a subject 🤷‍♀️ They bring in "experts", generally fringe or shunned individuals in a particular field, fabricate statistics with any bias they want, some posterboards, and boom: unjust laws. 🤦‍♀️

Andrew Wakefield is currently an anti-vaccine activist/filmmaker, living a wealthy lifestyle in Austin, Texas. Discredited, disgraced with ethical breaches & data falsification, his medical license was revoked 2010. He continues, prominent & highly influential within global anti-vaccination movement

Right! Ironically, I was just having a long conversation in real life here about 41-yr-old Jason Arday found dead shortly after resigning as the youngest black Professor at Cambridge University in England, accused of plagiarism by right-wing trolls. It's a sad & painful loss - seems so unnecessary.

And he's ONLY anti-vaccine now b/c the anti-vac conspiracy nuts are the only people supporting him now. For a long time he was SPECIFICALLY only anti the MMR vaccine so he could sell the alternative measles vaccine he had CONVENIENTLY patented just before publishing "the study"

Absolutely science communication is fragile and difficult to do well. Always up for betterment in that area. Still, I have grown tired of just excusing stupidity; defined as willful ignorance. For all we have done to raise the ceiling, the floor allowance is too low.

Also doesn't help when the government, the people who should be protecting the citizens and pushing for fact and not fiction, pushes these lies because we have incompetent people in charge of things they know nothing about.

There are so many examples of this. A spurious study done with poor methodology gets roundly dismissed for its shittyness but then gets latched onto and held up as THE study to rule all studies as if somehow every other study is wrong. It's all so obviously a (almost always right wing) grift.

Unless you count autism as a bad reaction. I'm of the conviction that the whole anti-vax movement was because of resentment toward the kids who didn't turn out 100% the way Mom or Dad wanted...

It's the same with most anything. Multitudes of archaeologists doing solid, empirical work, writing peer reviewed papers, get shuffed aside because of the fucking Graham Hancocks making up shit, and bloody ancient aliens. Now there's actually people thinking archies are 'hiding the truth.' Why???

If The Lancet had been running a satisfactory review process there would not have been a paper in the first place. They failed to provide proper academic oversight.

And it’s been what, 20yrs since he himself admitted lying?? But some minor celebrity with an autistic child picks it up and won’t let go- aided by celebrity pals and, of course, RFK Jr.

Now it’s old shoe leather gravel voice pretending to be a scientist. Belief in eugenics nonsense is driving some of this evil - take away prevention, treatment and healthcare access = the “weak” will die off. Repugnant.

>Blame all those stupid people who defied their own common sense to believe such rubbish. >Anybody with any brains would know it would have been impossible to reach such a definitive conclusion on autism without a longitudinal study extending over many years.

It takes more than one grifter -- it takes an ecosystem of politicians, influencers and aligned media to cherry pick and amplify false but lucrative disinformation. Had that doctor not been available they would have found another source.

the problem isn't science communication. the problem is a widespread lack of education and critical thinking in the US, which is part of an intentional 40+ year campaign. grifters can only grift when others aren't wise enough to see through it. science comms aren't difficult in other countries.

Society embraces what they feel in their hearts, be it truth or lies. Why do you think the terra cotta tyrant got elected twice!? They would really rather believe the gov is trying to turn them all into 5g lizard people, then prevent them from dying of a plague.

We need to find a legal mean to sued these liars who cause real harm and deaths and get them condemned to jail sentence. Actively lying in those case is premeditation.

The doctor who claimed that vaccines cause autism lost his medical license for faking for the study. But his lies and the damage he did to public health persist long after Like the Confederacy lies and the damage they do to America today Americans celebrate an Insurrection Build Statues To Traitors

2.2% of the U.S. population scores below an IQ of 70, which is the statistical threshold for a potential intellectual disability. Another 15% of the general population scores at or below an IQ of 85, classified as low-average or borderline cognitive function. The rest should know better!

And he didn't even say that vaccines in general cause Autism. He specifically said it was the MMR combo. And he said it because he held a patent for an alternative, but it wasn't selling well against it.

The worst bit is if you read that paper you can see it's all bullshit, not one idiot that thinks it's true has ever even read it, it's like the bible.

I am a little confused with your statement, I agree without the vacine for polio, a lot of people will be disabled, or not here, but the second part?

That doctor was hired by lawyers to write that paper, so they could sue for medical malpractice! It'd be like ambulance chasers hiring a guy to cause 3rd party car crashes by driving like a lunatic!

Critical thinking Needs to be taught as a core component from 1st grade through all school. It has become essential to people safety and happiness.
