This trip, in California, I've traveled through the Mojave desert with its miles of Joshua trees and cactus, over hills that made mines, some now defunct where now lies ghost towns, the memory of booming times that suddenly dropped away. We went higher...

...we move on to cross the sierras (a feat that took months for pioneers to make their way, for us it only took a few hours) into California's gold country, as in Gold Rush. Pioneer towns that haven't lost their 19th c. character on their main streets, but have grown considerably since those days...

We traversed the long Central Valley of endless farmland; miles of almond groves, and stone fruit trees. Hours of it. We climbed out of that through Tehachipi, the living model train set, and reached the desert again, heading into San Bernardino county, heading for Riverside county, our home.

...while on our right we would pass a mountain range protecting the lowest point in the U.S., Death Valley. But higher we climbed till we met the tree line, a carpet of dense pines; ponderosa, sugar, and others. Fall had taken hold among the glittering aspens, flickering in yellows. After our stay..

...along the outskirts. The pines gave way to California oaks and the golden grasses of the hinterlands. In Merced, it was grasslands and black cattle as far as the eye could see. Until civilization trickled in. From then on it was more open country, until the freeway...

...until you could see the jagged spine of the sierras higher than ever imagined with tiny trees atop. Old barns with swayed roofs dotted the terrain of creeks and poplars meandered followed by black cows. To our left as we climbed, were the ever-growing western sierras where we were headed...

That would rise to 7500 and 8500 feet, and even higher to 10,000 feet where, in some places, had perpetual snow, though with climate change, those glaciers and patches have begun to shrink. Above us, we would pass the highest point in the contiguous United States...

Getting all packed from our last overnight campsite halfway home, ready to go home...when hubby discovered the trailer had a flat tire. I guess we were due. Good thing we're close to town.

Leaving Mammoth one day early, still a little concerned about dragging the trailer through the weather in the pass to Jackson. We'll spend the night about halfway there at a Quality Inn. A real shower, full time internet, and meals someone else cooks. And Chloe loves hotels. (She studies my notes)

That Quality Inn at Minden NV was the worst place I ever stayed DO NOT GO THERE. Half the place is shut with plywood blocking the stairs, their website offers free breakfast but that's a lie, no PHONE in the room, shampoo isn't refilled in the shower, holes and bad patches in the walls...just bad

Had a great time at my Sherlockian event at #BakerStreetWest. Sold lots of books and even a few Sherlockian lapel pins. They are slowly building back what they had to tear down, so the pub is rebuilt and Craig bought some pint glasses. Donate to help them. Google Baker Street West for info.

This Black MAGA creator says she “cannot believe the disrespect” after being removed from a San Antonio rally hosted by Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton!?!?! Why would they treat her this way???

We did our 14 days at #FrenchCamp (all we're allowed) moved across the hwy to Tuff for 4 days. This one has a lot of Aspen. And the creek runs behind them so Craig can fish some more. THEN on to Jackson for my #Sherlockianevent see jeriwesterson.com #camping #vintageTrailer #RVing #highsierra

Minding my own business sitting in front of the campfire, heard "whoo, whoo!", looked up, and saw this dark silhouette with a wide wingspan come out of the darkening forest toward me and nearly take my head off. Who to you too, Owl.

We've been keeping our eye on the weather. In about a week we have to go through some passes to journey on to Jackson in Gold Country for my event. It looks like we may have to cut out week-long stay in Mammoth...

Hotel employees have swarmed the laundramat in Mammoth and taken over ALL the equipment. Fortunately, we got ours done first and I snagged a cart when I saw what was happening. Maybe they had a problem at the hotel, but it doesn't entitle you to take over ALL the equipment.

Currently doing a lot of research on Victorian firearms, specifically those used for shooting parties, including all sorts of terms one generally takes for granted but don't REALLY know. For my 7th #IrregularDetectiveMystery, THE BANEFUL SHOOTING PARTY, to be released the Fall 🍁🍂 of 2027.

Still fishing. It's safe to say that that creek water is cold all year round. It comes from the highest elevations in the sierras. This one comes from up the hill from this campground from Rock Lake at 8500 ft. We're a thousand feet lower.

It's like each part of the creekside has its own vignette. This squirrel found a pinecone still full of nuts under a log draped over the creek. They'd get one, come out to the log in the sun, eat it, repeat, until it was time to find a new location.

It just so happened that when this tree fell it fell on that pinecone and might stay that way till the spring/summer thaw when this creek is raging. I love Nature's little tableaus.
