Is the Microsoft Office Ribbon causing people to have fewer children? A provocative new working paper explores the persistent drop in birth rates since Office 2007 was introduced nearly two decades ago.

I can only speak or myself, but I haven't had any children since the introduction of Windows 95. I realize that's anecdotal, but it strikes me as more than coincidence...

I think a better hypothesis would be that US college tuition has increased 36.8% since 2010, so adults of childbearing age are saddled with extreme student debt. They cannot afford more than a 1 BR apartment or the soccer mom van or the kids.

You think US college tuition is causing birth rates to drop in Norway, where tuition is $0? WTF are you talking about. Get out of your American bubble. This is a worldwide trend, and happens whenever a society becomes more affluent.

Fair point. Japan is having the same crisis. Fewer people entering the workforce than retiring. So maybe having kids for farm labor and post WWII boom are in the rear view mirror.

My girlfriend moved in with me in 2007, we went on to have a child in mid 2010 and late 2011. Which means I can correlate the conception of our kids with the recent release Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7...

I think it's more to do with Microsoft word's formatting issues. You spend a day creating a doc w/ a table in it and at the very end decide to move one picture around and the whole thing goes to shit. I've sworn off the entire human race more than once. I certainly wasn't going to make any new ones

Correlation causes Causation, as emphatically proven on The Simpsons. Or, as David Hume would say, and say many times in A Treatise of Human Nature, “Betwixt.”

It started earlier as people keep f**king with Microsoft® Losedows™ rather than – well – other people for decades now. But Microsoft® Office™ Ribbon only accelerated the process... ;-)

Its probably because less people use desktop computers. And most user interfaces are now trending away from ribbons to flat taskbars. Oh and don’t forget everything is expensive now.
