U.S. journalism and punditry completely ignores the fact that the U.S. electorate belief system --including their belief of what Democrats stand for -- is shaped predominately by a massive right wing propaganda network across AM radio, broadcast TV, cable news, and the internet.

There is no "radical left." The positions that get demonized as "socialist" and "radical" are THE MAINSTREAM. The policies proposed by AOC, Bernie, Mamdani etc. are those of broad MAJORITIES of Americans across all demographics and indeed across party lines. Thread. bsky.app/profile/idio...

What Americans actually want, aka #mainstream policies: The right to #abortion [85%, Gallup 2024] Equal pay for #women. [77%, Pew Research, 2023] Stronger protection of the #environment [74%, Gallup, 2018] Legalized #cannabis [88%, Pew, 2023]

you can't talk about US politics and polling honestly without having a conversation about how the American news and information diet is comprised of infotainment sewage and agitprop. Yet you could pluck literally any news story from the feed and find ZERO mention of Republican propaganda successes.

not only do you have a vast right wing propaganda network that's growing all the time (NY Post, Fox News, Sinclair, AM Radio, now CBS, probably soon TikTok), you have a corporate press that's been fecklessly bullied for a generation to be soft on Republicans lest they be accused of "liberal bias"

techdirt.comBari Weiss Gets To Work ‘Fixing’ CBS ‘Bias’ — By Making It More BiasedFor more than fifty years the U.S. right wing has embraced a neat trick: by claiming that literally anything in factual opposition to their beliefs is “biased” and therefore must be dis…

on one end you have this massive right wing propaganda bullhorn lying about what Democrats stand for bolstered by a corporate press that's routinely gamed by Republicans to validate and amplify these lies then you have pundits wondering why the electorate so often votes against its best interests

just play along with me at home: any time you read journalism on U.S. politics, polling, or electorate's beliefs, see if it makes ANY mention of the U.S. public's news and information diet, or that ANYTHING AT ALL might be a bit rotten in the way the U.S. public gets informed on the issues

The confusingly popular Candace Owens has said free school lunches are racist because black families are being taught to be freeloaders. We live in a country that hears such idiotic commentary (do any white kids get free school lunch, Candace?) and doesn't flee from the source. This is the problem.

I feel like every time in the last 25yrs I’ve seen a discussion of how Fox News plays in nearly every retirement home and military base, not to mention more than half the Dr offices in the USA, the right always comes back with “but Dems dominate the late night comedy shows” like the two cancel out

the myth that the entire media (journalism or otherwise) has a "liberal bias" is foundational to their 50 year quest to discredit fact based opposition to their unpopular ideas even though it's never been true, and most media is center-right and owned by some right wing billionaire

And yet the pundit-class still think they can policy their way out of this mess when policy isn’t what got us into it in the first place… by adapting right wing camouflage?

They needed that many years ago when it was obviously a necessity and Republicans were taking over media outlets right in front of their faces. Not sure this is a problem Dems can overcome at this point.

Yep. That should certainly be part of an improved media ecosystem if they're going to compete with the right wing bullshit machine.

Honestly, if we’re talking about the concept we need to eradicate citizens talking about left wing ideas because they might be attributed to the party by Fox News or another propaganda outlet, there’s no hope

yep. You've got just out and out rank right wing propaganda. Then you have all these corporatist media nobs to amplify and validate it.

1,000 true. And when you try to explain this, even to smart voters who loathe MAGA, they say you’re dismissing Dem’s piss poor messaging. Especially younger voters who can’t see the problem because it’s the only media environment they’ve known. Like fish in water, they don’t know what water is.

Agreed. And Semafor has the same delusion so many other Capitol hill stenographers masquerading as journalists have. Namely centrist/moderate means neutral. No centrist means right wing beliefs covered in intellectualism. The scary "left-wing" ideas are always ones other countries have and love.

This is so easy to fix. When Republicans say "Democrats want open borders!!" Journalists just have to ask "Which Democrats have advocated for open borders and when did they do it?" Demand a quote supporting open borders from an elected Democrat or Democratic party thought leader. There are none.

Left wing ideas like affordable health care, making the wealthy pay their fair share, a livable minimum wage, a continuation of our Republic, rebuilding failing infrastructure, preventing more monster storms like Melissa, and lifting poor children out of poverty are unpopular? Karl's point is right!

yep. Fox is just purer propaganda, while Semafor puts a tiny bit more effort into pretending to be a serious org, and not just a center-right, pro-capitalist class bullhorn

“according to a new center-left group’s report “ so what you’re saying is, this report is propaganda written by Centrists…. No wonder they don’t like it if the Democrat party is moving left .

Since going back to antenna tv, I’ve been amazed at the number of religious, heavily Christian, channels and programs. And that some openly condone the behavior of the current administration has me shaking my head.

I find it's always a mix I find of deliberate, and AT BEST hiring the kind of people who are too dim and/or feckless to identify the problem

Crime is trending down everywhere there is competent government in the US. We went through this “tough on crime” biz with Reagan-Bush-Clinton already. And a lot of people said it just fed the police state. I don’t trust this “group’s” “new report”. Who the eff are YOU anyway??
