At least Burnham got the timing right - they could be announcing this after Britain experienced an unprecedented 4 successive months of heatwaves and much of Europe is on fire. Oh!

and what's worse Andy it makes no bloody difference, the world is going fast to EV's and trying to protect Nissan mini and JLR is fake as who is buying these in 2 years time with oil not going down

I'm genuinely curious - do people really think we'll have the infrastructure in place for 70% of new cars to be EVs within four years? That would be a mammoth undertaking from where we are now. Is doubling the current percentage perhaps simply a practical approach, with increases thereafter?

It's doubling the number of sales. Let's see what the experts say. There don't seem to be any here, just anecdotal views.

I know what sales that equates to as I am the CPs and projections. But if one thing is likely to slow CP rollout its reducing the number of EVs sold (or uncertainty of the same) as the former gets built on the basis of the confidence of latter.

I agree. But I'm not sure it's feasible in the timescales. There are so few public chargers, and only those with private drives can conveniently and affordable charge at home. We need a properly resourced plan, and I'm not sure we have one in place yet to achieve this in four years.

One thing actions like this will do is put off the companies that would otherwise be investing in charging networks. It’s beyond stupid.

Around 70% of the UK population has access to private parking. Although in city centres that figure drops rapidly, but city centre dwellers are generally less dependent on cars. I think all this does is make it more likely British drivers will be buying a BYD instead of a domestic brand.

Most people only drive 10-20 miles a day. If you relax planning and standardise pavement charging systems then it is entirely possible. I leave my house with 300 miles of range every morning. And never have to visit a petrol forecourt.

And those "if"s aren't overnight fixes. We're on our second EV. But we have the luxury of our own drive. And we're able to afford the higher costs of EVs I'd love to read expert analysis on what's feasible by when.

Exactly … only a few wingnuts and profiteers. For the rest of us … we’ve seen this coming for a long time, it’s been ridiculously hot for a very long time, perhaps we should actually do something about it 🤷‍♂️

Stupid thing is car makers can't just turn the EV tap every time a government decides to move targets. It takes 3 years to develop a new car even with old tech engines so their planned EV models are already well into development. They won't mothball that investment for short sighted politicians.

It's to protect Car manufacturing jobs. Let's check in on Germany and see how they are getting on with a very similar policy pathway: bsky.app/profile/tomh...

I absolutely love that German politicians have/are fighting tooth and nail to defer or relax emission standards, right in the teeth of a diesel (and a lesser extent petrol) crunch, while consumers are clearly turning away in any eventuality. 'Fighting yesterday's war' doesn't even touch the sides.

Your fake news dictionary might say "redicalosed" isn't a word, maybe leading you to wonder how the hell a professional writer misspelled "radicalised" so…radically…but that's just Big Dictionary lying to you.

A dictionary simply records how words are used -- so use the word. Use it a lot. Make it so popular that it gets added to the dictionary. You Have The Power.

This and approving the oil licenses in the North Sea whilst the country is on fire. Burnham seems to want to follow in the footsteps of Starmer....😣

I support net zero, but just announcing targets with no proper plan for getting there is pointless. People aren’t going to rush out and buy EVs because of wildfires and heatwaves in the numbers that allow car manufacturers to profitably transition and the country has the infrastructure for.

Strong agree. For so many folk, this is the year when the penny has dropped on climate change. Govt could and should channel that widespread realisation to build momentum towards net zero.

Buying an EV and keeping it for at least a decade is not only good for the planet it’s good for me. The fuel savings alone will pay for the car. It will save tons of carbon emissions and I will be doing my bit. Those that can should. And should be encouraged.

It would. But in Belfast bikes appear to be target practice…🤣 But I do have a bike (electric assistance type) as well. But I’m embarrassed to admit to being a fair weather cyclist…
