this is purely my own gut feeling and i’d love actual devs input, but i get the sense that on top of everything else collapsing, one of the big struggles in games is that the Normal Iterative Sequel, reasonably scoped and made on a quick schedule, seems to sell like six copies now

this type of game has traditionally been the bread and butter. this is what keeps lights on. but i saw that boltgun 2, by all accounts a fine sequel to a popular game from a massive brand sold like a fifth of the original numbers and was like. well what the fuck are you meant to do if not that

I feel like I first caught this when I realized River City Girls 2 had been out for months and nobody I followed who was crazy about the first one even made a peep about it.

I mean its probably an effect of 40k mania cooling down and boltgun itself not being above average. Why take a chance on a sequel when there are a billion games like it that are better and original. Sad that theres less space to learn and grow though.

similarly i saw deadzone rogue get reviewbombed because they decided to make an iterative sequel a year after leaving early access rather than continuing to patch the original forever and i understand all the steps to why this happened but you have to see that infinite updates is not sustainable

I kinda wonder if this also dovetails with how much people are used to getting entertainment for 'free' now, like there's so much art out there of any medium that you can just tap into that the thought that someone has to get paid a living wage for this is like, a violation somehow

I also wanna offer a generational perspective if youre a young adult who started gaming in the 2010s, whose first halo game was halo 3, your second halo game was most likely 4. Fallout new Vegas? Here's fallout 4. Dead Rising 2 or 3? Oops 4 killed the franchise.

Game sequels being iteratively better stopped being the norm back in the 7th gen. And at best the exceptional polished 2nd entry would be followed by a third that puts the series in gaming jail for a while

RE4, if we treat it 5 and 6 as its own functional trilogy was basically making a 10 out of 10 game and losing all confidence in its qualities for the sequels because call of duty was making too much money

Genuinely the one thing I fucking hate about the modern landscape is normal games getting roadmaps for patches that change a lot of fundamental things about the core gameplay and it being expected to happen for years basically turning single player stuff into quasi live service

I'm still trying to figure out whether Look Outside is the game I saw people talking about a while ago that's changed so much that it's fundamentally different now than it was at launch or if that's something else

i hate it!! i like when games are complete statements and you respond to feedback by making a new complete statement the next time

It becomes clear that I should not buy your game at launch because it isn't done or that these studios are so insecure about their vision willing to change everything on a whim to satisfy the philistine user base which just puts me off of someone's game entirely

It’s wild to me that the GOTY winner from 2016 is impossible to play anymore because it was fucking Overwatch and the game has gone through a billion updates (and a sequel I guess???)

basically makes me not want to ever buy a game at launch. I'm not gonna be playing your shit in six months I got other stuff to play!!

Honestly it could be a matter of timing - boltgun 2 released near next fest clogging up everybodys algorithms with like, 5000 AI demos, and its likely thats turned a lot more people into skeptics about smaller releases without actually bothering to filter through...

Likewise, it *is* iterative, and although Boltgun 2 is definitely a great game, I'm sure lots of people bought the first one *because* they saw it as a fresh warhammer experience

I doubt that's much of a metric, I haven't even heard about that game until now (not in the Warhammer community but still) I think it's more just that the existence of DLC has kinda cannibalized games that would otherwise just become sequels in the 6th gen.

Gotta trick people into thinking its an expansion when its actually a sequel. Thats the only way to get around this problem now
