moving over to bluesky from twitter was huge for my mental health because twitter sucked so bad but over the years bluesky has now become pretty much just as bad because well it is also literally just twitter. we did build the demon again to be fair

Well they do have a number of features here that allow you to set controls on where your posts are seen so you can choose to not show up in the discover feed if you don't want to posts "escape containment" as they say.

I feel much more free here since I can obliterate people from my plane of existence and not care. I still think many people underestimate how strong the block button is here

It’s not even just a community thing when the people that run this place seem determined to bring it about themselves and I think this place is going to either shut down or become something unrecognizable within the next year.

I very much hate that theres a whole genre of post on here of screenshotting something stupid the owner of Twitter said because I very specifically came over here to think and perceive less of him.

It kinda feels like maybe the human brain wasn't ready to be hooked up to the Maximum Exposure to Everyone Else All The Time machine

to give us credit, i think the outcome of the 2024 u.s. election made this place much much worse both directly (a million orange-man-bad people came on and started spamming “orange man bad” at everyone as if we hadn’t heard) and indirectly (resumption of the horrors making us all scared & angry)

using this site makes me very anxious. i am hyper-aware of how visible i am, how easy it is to create enemies and upset people with random posts you might not have thought through, which in turn makes you less vulnerable online, which in turn makes you come across as even more standoffish etc

this is more or less why I opted to just completely stop posting. i'm increasingly of the opinion this "type" of social media is basically just evil and there isn't really a safe level of participation? twitter is worse, obviously, but bluesky is still mind poison all the same.

like I'm a Streamer/YouTuber type guy so I already have to deal with people basically inventing fanfiction about me and appearing to be aloof and callous but Having A Timeline at all seems basically designed to give people the strangest and worst impression of who you are as a person?

it reall feels like that. countless times i’ve found someone who seems nice and normal and someone i’d probably get on with great with if i met them just like, lolcow level hate me purely because of how they’ve come across my most annoying posts in the worst context and it’s like ah, well,

yeah social media in general has been terrible for my paranoia and im invisible compared to you. but theres always a chance anything i say even things i didnt think would be an issue get blown up. and then i cant post on the site with my friends again.

and like it has made me more withdrawn. i used to say all kinda stuff and talk about anything im doing and now i triple think whether to post about that movie i saw yesterday and then i dont because i imagine the most annoying outcome and its better to not post. now i just reply to friends lol.

living in the panopticon makes you absolutely insane. my only experience with this was being a moderately successful fanfic writer and even that drove me to almost completely disconnect from the community. was overthinking every single thing I wrote or even just chatted about on public discords

so the timeline becomes a place for only your most strongly held opinions or irreverent jokes, sometimes both at the same time, and combined with the constant pressure to weigh in on daily discourse it leads to an environment that naturally cultivates a vibe of appearing callous and superior

which is all to say i don't want to be that. i don't think i am that, but i do think a feed where i post "gay gerard way be like have you fucked a dude and gave head" next to angry communist politics next to video game opinions maybe 3 people on earth agree creates a strange impression of me lmao

I feel this so much. I really, really, really don't like who I am if you look at my feed on this platform, but also it's what the platform facilitates. It's what it pushes you to be!

for what it's worth your posts showing up on my feed usually feel like a fun respite from a lot of the rest of the site. I've deffo felt the overall tone of this place leaning more twitter over time

there was a time when being quite good at this made people more connected and employable and i think we have reached a tipping point a long time ago that the exact opposite is true of both

I hate to say it, cause I wouldn't be following if I didn't overall find your posts entertaining and interesting, but yes every once in a while you come off much like you described not wanting to come off as. I don't think it's your fault, I think it's the platform environment, as you described.

Okay but I follow you specifically for the funny gay parody lyrics immediately followed by game opinions nobody with a normal life can keep up with. It’s part of the fun.

You guys really need to: 1. Take a break from the Internet. 2. Take some responsibility. No one else can make you the person you want to be. If it's so hard because you are too obsessed with likes, you really should get help.

I think for me I've accepted that twitterlikes are a place where I'm never really going to be able to express the full breadth of my emotions due to its limited nature. I have to talk conversationally as well. and a site like this just isn't going to be for that ever

This is going to sound like me being sarcastic but I mean it very sincerely - this might be less of an over here or over there issue and more just a natural side effect of being one of the best posters of all time on a platform that's populated enough for that to be a problem

You can try going back to Twitter and confirm it. I have a feeling you will come back with a different outlook about this app.

I think "not being twitter" kind of cooked a lot of people's brains into thinking their actions are morally righteous because they selected Paragon at character creation, so now they just act like screaming gibbons because well at least I'm not some filthy nazi on Twitter

Yes simply boycotting 1 social media to join another is simply (at best) akin to simply moving from 1 country to another in the hope to avoid rain.

Social media isn't stressful or boring and is not supposed to be an echo chamber. You need diversity of thought and this site lacks it. This entire experience feels like day old flat soda and I hope we get a better alternative.

yeah this place is more or less twitter minus nazis. tbh that's fine for me but that's because I am blessed with a very small amount of followers that are almost all moots, but if I had even a modest following I would dial back my social media use to almost 0

I left twitter (and all other social media) in 2020 and just reemerged to poke around on bluesky and honestly it feels the same as back then just with fewer celebs. And then I see what happened on twitter for 2 seconds and get nearly fatal psychic damage.

in the interim between twitter becoming an active detriment to my mental health and deciding to hop on bluesky, I was posting on a small youtuber's personal forum with only a couple dozen other people. they didn't know ball on my hobbies but honestly I was a fool to stop going there.

people were open to saying very very personal shit bc they weren't open to the social media panopticon where anyone can wander in and perceive you. it's not like that can't create its own drama, but it's at least very contained. ideal internet space.

My experience is nothing like that. Yes, the doom is the same, but the number of auto-reply bots trying to challenge everything from the color of the sky to whether women should game is entirely different.

Keep in mind bsky will die. Everyone will move on to the next thing, it'll be good for a while. It'll get popular. It'll turn rotten and die. We'll move again. What actual matters though? Is the good things you can get from it while you can. It's just a website. Don't let it define things...

...for your life. And use those block and mute features. There's no escaping humanity. Where ever people are you'll find darkness. But they're not all bad. And not all the time 👍
