sometimes i click on youtube shorts by accident and scroll through a couple and it only takes 30 seconds for me to be like yeah these should be illegal

I dunno mines all a Contractor explaining why building techniques work and then destroying what he built at the end And a guy cooking food on a tight budget screaming about Pink Pans Seems sorta okay

Ive been thankful that my shorts feed is usually stuff I'm actually interested in. MAYBE the first swipe will lead to another good one. But by the 3rd it's definitely trash and I wipe it from my watch history.

my youtube algorithm is pretty fine tuned and even then scrolling through shorts is actively repulsive to me. sometimes i'll watch one from specific creators (dandelion crayon girl, various animators) but scrolling only shows pure poison.

I'm one of those incredibly sad, persistent people who has painfully curated my feed so it's like... 80% ok and I still agree with you because the drek that still makes it through is woefully bad. I should stop, but I'm a glutton for pain I guess :/

well i haven’t trained my algorithm so the default shit is instant ai voiceover summaries of random clickbait stories at the best of times

The only shorts i get recommended are from the guy who has two huskies and it took me until this post to remember you can "scroll" to another short while watching one & they're not just vertical video

1. On browser, use better youtube extensions to remove all shorts, love streams and stray recommendations 2. On mobile, set your shorts viewing limit to "0 minutes" in settings, which will make them disappear from menus

I used to watch Shorts before YT gutted its recommendation algo around 2024. Now I only get JapanEats, Vsauce + maybe something from channel I've subbed. Though I'm too drowned in long form (that's a different kind of brainrot IMO) to watch Shorts.

I use this thing. soitis.dev/control-pane... For shorts, my main usecase is redirecting to the normal player. I'm real annoyed how the subscription feed doesn't show you anything besides the thumbnail and title. There's a half dozen people I want to see shorts from, and can rarely tell which ones.

soitis.devControl Panel for YouTubeBrowser extension which gives you more control over YouTube by adding missing options and UI improvements - for desktop and mobile browsers

I do my best to avoid them (and TikToks, and other "short-form video") and I feel like it's led to me being out-of-touch but, like, I think that's better than the alternative.

Occasionally Youtube on my phone defaults to opening Shorts whenever I open the app, and the only reason it doesn't drive me wholly insane is that my algorithim frontloads Northernlion clips as a kind of ablative heat shield before it can get to the real mind shredding shit.

as someone who will always take captions when available I find it revolting the way they match them to the voiceover so you have to pay attention to the full video. I hate to use the term in a way that sounds like exaggeration but it's psychological manipulation

I very specifically never scroll them at all, just watching ones that actually get recommended, that I can intentionally click.

I figured out you can basically turn shorts off on the Android app by turning off your watch history. Sure it ruins YouTube in a pretty fundamental way but it's worth it, imo

Shorts are fine in my experience, as long as you never ever scroll through them and only watch ones you're specifically interested in or by channels you know. Same as Youtube in general, you have to avoid auto-play like the plague.

Yeah I see a lot of cool animation and fun clips through shorts but only through seeing a thumbnail and directly opening it. I don't use any other platform with scrolling video feeds so they're just vertical videos to me. The UI is frequently in the way though, thankfully you can clear the screen
