was hacking the elin save format for a few hours (3-4?) last night. its a massive json, and i had some reason* to believe cards.globalChara.1.D.A was the player's stats... which is just a bare array of 450+ numbers *entirely based on intuition and vibes (not those kinds)

with some pattern recognition i figured out that this bare list is actually a flattened 2D array of five values each (id, a, b, c, d), where id is a unique identifier for what skill / attribute / whatever is referred to and a, b, c, d are unknown fields for that skill

so i wrote a tool to print them all out, pretty-printed, and then got to work figuring out what each of them were and start annotating them. a lot of them dont use all 4 fields, which makes it a little trickier to figure out some of them (unused and unknown fields look the same) Fun time though!

It’s the first time seeing 馨子’s Halloween theme, She has her own unique and elegant vibe I’ve barely managed to finish the earlier illustration, the haunted house and Halloween might share a similar vibe..Maybe this counts as Halloween fanart too

i love things like this where you cut a textbox off to make it read something else. its so funny to me every time

if you wanna know what software dev is like sometimes, dusklight is currently crashing for people in Alberta, Canada because Microsoft didn't update their timezone database when they added a new timezone to windows

i've recently heard that some ai bros want to make an smw central alternative because we don't allow gen ai content on the site. here's my direct response to those people. "who owns rom hacking?" and other questions ai poisons us with shoujo.gay/who-owns-rom...

absolutely fucked developments in the mario galaxy decomp community. what the fuck. i knew shibbo. i was chatting a little with him only a few days ago.

casting approach and only *then* realizing i had an option to draw 7 on board sure was a "oh yeah huh. i could do that"

ive drawn one land this entire game. i just resolved 18 creatures entering the battlefield at the same time. hows your night going

it also seems remarkably useless? i like when little side objectives like this are hidden tutorials teaching you new ways to use abilities but like, this is the damage this enemy takes from being petrified + dropped... versus just hitting him in the face once

new castlevania has maybe the funniest credits roll ive ever seen in a game. its fine to put this under a separate menu guys. you dont need it in the actual credits--

i realize im mostly complaining about things in this thread so far but thats because those are the things that stand out and are easy to put your finger on. overall its still a fun game #belmontscurse

this is a weird complaint but the relic system... is bad. this sort of "equip a number of passive upgrades that you can replace as you want" straight up does not work if you dont limit *when* you can replace them. i see this mistake all the time and its annoying every time #belmontscurse

"accessories" like these are just... if you can equip them at any point, even mid-combat, theres no point to not pause, equip one, drink your healing potion, then pause again to equip your normal accessories. theres a reason e.g. hollow knight only lets you replace them at savepoints! #belmontscurse

this game takes place in 1499 but there are pictures of Brauner (born ~1870) and Shanoa (born ~1810 most likely) #belmontscurse

probably the weakest castlevania score to date? most of the songs are very overproduced and just start sounding like EDM. but no joke i think i have to turn off the music in the library area of the game its genuinely making me seasick. #belmontscurse

other than that: its a little bothersome that switching spells / weapons is at minimum six menu presses. i hope for something like glyph sleeve to show up, but im pretty sure it wont. also where are the warp rooms!! it takes so long to get around #belmontscurse

if my controller ever disconnects (i get a phone call, go to the bathroom, reply to some discord messages for five minutes...) then rose is stuck crouching and i cant move until i restart the game. bizarre bug #belmontscurse

as of writing (six hours in), its as i said yesterday: pretty good. i guess it feels the most like ecclesia out of all the previous ones with a heavy combat focus and a TON of platforming challenges over spike pits. feels more like hollow knight than castlevania at times #belmontscurse

end of the night and new castlevania is pretty fun, but its sorta not castlevania. which makes sense when you put the prince of persia guys on making another 2d platformer. 70% of the game is doing walljumping + grapple-swinging segments over spikes and buzzsaws.

very few rooms that stand out in my mind the way almost every room in something like Symphony of the Night does. it feels good to run around and doing platforming dont get me wrong but i feel castlevania has always been more of a moodpiece than an action platformer. again! still fun

honestly re: reverse engineering it just kinda blows to see your fun hobby get completely blown up by AI shit and people who love the slop machine because it's faster. AI art and shit at least *most* people correctly loathe + shun it, but too many people think that code isn't similarly creative.

the "parry 15 attacks" work goes super fast if you parry clusters of enemies because it seems to count every enemy *hit* by the parry, not how many times you successfully parry. go farm it out in the cemetary #belmontscurse

i really dont think i had anything to do with this but: the repository i took this example from has been deleted lmao

not this decomp but wrote up a few notes on another one i saw earlier today, to hopefully inform people on just how bad AI decomp code really is. sure, maybe you get the outline of the code (but ghidra can do that too, without costing $56k) and even though this matches its completely unusable
