a lot of the cool decomp / port stuff that's been done would not be possible without people like encounter, and others in our once niche community that dedicated hundreds of hours to this hobby. to have that work and it's creators abused like this is insulting to say the least.

our decomp community will probably be moving in a more private and closed direction to keep these kind of people out now. it's unfortunate, but in the current climate it's all that can be done to maintain any sanity. we're in a new much shittier era now, and we just have to adapt as best we can

Hate that it has to come to that, but these AI parasites have made it so explicitly clear that their intent is to steal work an deteriorate the scenes they infest that I don't know what else is really practical. Closing it off is probably the best call to protect the work being done.

I don't blame any of you for moving underground and just occasionally popping up to dump whatever cool stuff has been made. Sorry things have gotten so shitty for all of you, and I hope you all know that so many people appreciate all the time and care you put into these works.

Also just to be explicit- I have no expectation of any further work from any of you and am eternally grateful for all the cool shit that has been made already and if you all never release another thing again I completely understand

Remind me to find another job once I finish my programming school because it's clear I won't continue to "programming" because of these "slop eaters" (that's what I call vibecoders) Game decompilation started in 2018... when slop exist in 2022, doesn't take long to ruin decomp with them.

I was genuinely interested in doing a recomp of fzero snes, somebody already did it with ai. What the fuck is the point anymore. Even if i did make a better one (it cant run a snes game on a laptop from fucking 2021), it feels pointless because these "projects" just make the novelty disappear

I'm not in the scene so forgive the unwarranted jumping in here (blame reposts) but...Disregard them. Treat having made "a non-AI version" as your badge of honor (which it would be). (1/2)

The people who will be satisfied with some vomited out trash instead of wanting something crafted with love and care are not your target audience. They should be treated as nonexistent, less than human. Build for those who care. Build for you.

I get where youre coming from but i meant it moreso in the sense that, at least as far as im concerned, now people see a decomp and immediately think "damn its probably ai" and pass it up because 90% of the time for the last month and a half it has been

Sorry you're probably gonna get a handful or more replies that berate this decision and don't respect the work y'all put in. It's a shame it came to this at all, more proof that some folks aren't worth the dirt they're putting us and themselves into with this AI shit

I expect this era of vibe coding to fizzle out. The cost of the tokens are getting non trivial and will only go up so usage will slow. Defensive rules to block giant PRs without prior discussion and requiring specific consent to use agents on a codebase can help.

Additionally, we know that token costs are heavily subsidized, see: all of that debt. They will need to stop being subsidized at some point. So token costs have definite economic reasons to rise as well as plausible technological reasons for them to fall. (And this is neglecting externalities.)

The ability of a.i. will diminish as it encounters more and more of it own untrustable output as input. It's certanty is built on blind trust so its hallucinations will become exponential and it will not be able to detect them.

This is a complete misunderstanding of how models work - it doesn't "poison" itself with feedback like people intuitively think, and the top models for a few years now have actually been trained on more carefully curated corpuses that largely consist of AI generations because they're more useful

The desire to keep going is the only thing that keeps me from throwing in the towel on this. Decomps and Recomps is what gave me the ability to make my adventures in video games personal and magical. The fact that AI wants to take that away, just makes me wanna fight even harder. Fuck AI.

I've worked with asmdiffer before and ObjDiff + dtk just make decompilation so much EASIER. encounter has done nothing but good to the scene, I can't believe people are saying he's replaceable just because of sunsetting the tracker.

Tbf he said it was "cloutchasers" not vibecoders or folks using AI. The post was the amount of projects getting added to the trackers by people who are not properly maintaining their projects.

gods, this is disappointing. loved what decomp.dev did for the community as someone fascinated by it(only as an observer myself, not a low-level/reveng person who has the time for decomping). sad to see a genuinely good project go like this. fuck slop and AI
