“Prayer matters,” Abbott said. Prayers “could have been the reason why water stopped rising”. What a shameful MAGA debacle of a press conference - a conference supposedly intended to help families desperate for information on the Texas flooding. www.theguardian.com/us-news/live...

Texas elected a monster as its Governor. Texas elected Trump and the Republicans. These elected politicians chose to make Texas the armpit of the United States. Freedom of choice. And people are suffering. NOT because of Jesus.

Fantastic logic! Following that, I´d say drought-induced prayer could have been the reason for the intense rains in the first place. (Have me excused, as I am a novice when it comes to predicting prayer-based outcomes)

So what caused the floods? Passing the horrendous funding bill? Did Abbott and his party kill Texans because he didn't pray enough? Why not? It's so easy to twist this bullshit - instead just fund NOAA, FEMA, and stop abusing your alert system.

Check out this guy: state representative for Kerrville, Texas House District 53, Wes Virdell. MAGA nut job -a proponent of making ivermectin available over-the-counter. Poor Kerrville. Get rid of Wes Virdell #wesVirdell

There's an entire handbook on it. Leviticus is very specific about how he wants his animal sacrifices performed, so these Old Testament types can just look up in their own book for how to do them properly.

it is empty platitudes, trivia the previous governor was famous for doing a prayer for the drought to end at a mega church but back to Abbot, he is a true believer lawyer who is also a person who is fine with self corruption justifying he deserves everything. He is handicapped after this

well he backed tort reform several times and several of those things became law he is also the mentor for ted cruz, him being a former Attorney General picking his lawyer to be Solictor General arguing Texas opinion when Abbot sued anyone like the federal court ironically Cruz who sucks, well Cruz

I wonder about that. Does Abbott truly believe the stuff he spews or does he just know a lot of folks in his State do? When the tree fell on him, maybe he should have taken it as a sign from God to change his ways, but he just saw it as a sign to extract tens of millions from insurance companies.

It wasn't prayers...it was the magic rock in my pocket. You're welcome, Greg. Oh, also, the magic rock says you still don't get to walk. Walking is for people with souls.

No, they don't. American Protestants, for the most part, are all in on "solo fide", redemption by faith alone. They believe that all you have to do to be saved is to believe the right thing, and works are valueless. Naturally this is incredibly convenient when you want to avoid helping people.

Tell me you live in Utah without telling me you live in Utah… I was just discussing this with extended family yesterday. “Pray for rain” is not a valid, or even useful, water policy. So frustrating.

How to evade responsibility for anything. People died not because we cut funding for the weather service but because we didn't pray hard enough.🙄

😢Are officials praising Trump for cutting funding to the National Weather Service and preventing them from doing their jobs? How’s that work exactly?? If Gov Abbott doesn’t lose his job next election, then we might just have to let TX go to God. They’re a failed state.

No, he's just hoping his electorate has forgotten. And they probably have, considering how American voters are and considering that his narrative accords with their own religious preconceptions.

It was disgraceful and disgusting ting to watch in real time. The part I believe in, is there is a special place waiting for these people holding this meeting, and it has nothing to do with”heavenly arms”.

The sheer absurdity of a government official pointing to the people who’ve died and saying that prayers saved some people but not your loved one, sorry. Mysterious ways and all, surely you understand how god didn’t think they were important

He worships a being that's too weak to save people, and won't even be bothered to assist unless sufficiently placated first by mindless praise. I'm not entirely sure that's God he's praying to.

There is religious jibber-jabber to cover any situation. None of it means or accomplishes a damn thing. If you want to say "god" had anything to do with this one way or another my question is why did "he" attack a christian bible camp in the first place.

What with a collection of the most ignorant and malignant Trump fellatio enthusiasts in America, of course the press would have to wait for anything meaningful.

Why does this smell like Uvalde? The pressers with Abbott talking about how great/amazing the response was (& condemned O'Rourke for asking pointed questions) & then we found out the truth, how badly law enforcement screwed up! WTF were all alerts sent out only on X? Didn't they ever hear of Nixle?

I personally haven't even looked at 'X' since Musk-rat bought it. I would NEVER consider it, 'a trusted source'. Nixle is an emergency alert system. Since Abbott is too damn cheap to fund things that save lives, like flood sirens, maybe Texas can, at least, become part of Nixle?

Nice going @theguardian.com, you got this up in record time. It was a loathsome press conference. Hard to imagine, but the republicans are morphing into something worse. They are all so drunk on power, their access to power, and having blown away the libs, that they have lost their souls.
