I continue to believe that in times like these, we all share a collective duty NOT to splatter our demotivating feelings of doom and despair all over everybody else in public. I don’t care if it makes YOU feel better. This isn’t about YOU. Deal with those feelings outside of public venues.

anyway I’m going out to protest this weekend because we haven’t been beaten yet, and I suggest you do the same it’ll make you feel better than reading an endless stream of posts about how we’re all doomed and we might as well offer ourselves up to be processed into slurry for the MAGA AI mines now

Feeling defeated and demoralized is something human beings regularly feel. Personally, professionally, any context. But man, its a foundational adult skill to deal with that before making it somebody else's problem. Feel like social media has damaged that particular skillset.

I think you're right *and* I think if one sees someone crashing out about everything that's going on and has the bandwidth to shore them up, they should. Not everyone is prepared for this fight yet and giving people a little grace and a reason not to despair is a good way to secure friends & allies

I experience those feelings. I’m sure all of us do. There are ways to handle that that don’t involve contributing to demotivating and panic-inducing messages on social media.

And no, I’m not talking about *posting negative and depressing factual information.* That’s an essential and important task. I am talking about emotionally-charged public dooming. This does no one any good.

My flags for dooming include ‘is this assuming that the forces of evil are all powerful and those of good are powerless? Does this assume that bad trends will continue or worsen indefinitely and good trends will reverse?’ Et al.

If you study the successful rebellions and resistance and civil rights movements of the past, you will note that “people who spend their time publicly bumming out everyone around them by emphasizing how totally fucked everything is” do not play a central role, or indeed, any role at all

My husband's family (2 adults and 4 children) survived the Holocaust because a member of the Dutch resistance found hiding places for all of them. She broke the law and risked her life. She is honored at Yad Vashem along with many other righteous gentiles. Would you do the same?

As a black person who is being erased by this administration I find it really hard not to be in a constant state of rage. The other side of me tries to find joy where I can. FYI I'd we dont fuck this shit up we are doomed.

When people falter and feel despair I prefer to help them rise up, find hope, not pound them into the ground for it. This is about all of us, telling people to go fuck their feelings is what they otherside does.

Morale is essential and since the default morale level for the Democrats at this time as well, we have to do everything we can to preserve it. That includes not doom-dumping all over your friends and allies and neighbors. We all are miserable currently, got it. You’re not the only one.

You make a great point. The situation is bad, and it’s going to get worse. But one reason thing as are so bad is that millions of people don’t care, or simply aren’t paying attention. So there we need to be walking that fine line between spreading despair and spreading awareness.

I realized not long ago that whenever a good thing happened my knee-jeek reaction was to go "eh, nothing will come of it" and since then I've been trying to at least frame it as a question (e.g., "how can we make sure this *does* matter?")

I've made it into a logic thing, because that's how my brain works. We could be cooked. We could be dead and we don't even know it yet. If that's the case, nothing we do now matters. If we aren't, and if we still have a path forward, thEn everything we think, say, do, and believe matters. RIGHT NOW!

Endlessly dooming will not help us in the first case. Trying won't change anything either, but either way we are screwed. But if we give in to the fear and uncertainty, that seals our fate in either scenario. And that's not something I'm willing to do.

Opinion policing by any other name is still controlling acceptable opinions. Join Faine if you believe that the majority should be able to tell any minority to shut up. If you believe that telling others to shut up is both a waste and a step in the wrong direction, speak up.

yes, I’m terribly sorry that I forgot that your feelings are the most important feelings in the world, and that the collective good is irrelevant in the face of Important Feelings

curious as to where they said any of that, because that's not how I read it. it's a good point - that doesn't mean it's wrong to feel despondent, but it also doesn't mean anyone else has to take it seriously.

Or maybe don't dictate how people should process their feelings & focus on what works for you & share that which people may find more useful than "fuck your feelings." Not everyone can go protest for many reasons so maybe suggest other uplifting ways they can add their voices. Be safe out there.
