hello cis friends this is what people mean by trans genocide if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

they moved it to the subhead/summary/whatever its called. The remains of Sam Nordquist, 24, a transgender man, were found after he had been reported missing. The district attorney in Ontario County, N.Y., called the circumstances surrounding the death “beyond depraved.”

this is disgusting. dehumanizing trans people in the press by stripping away their identities is fucking low, and they should be ashamed.

Both the perps and victim were trans. Of course they report victims as trans. There have been many headlines that say "woman arrested for raping/killing etc", when it's clearly a trans identified man. Your confirmation bias is showing.

I understand, but I would also point out that an assumption is made here about motives that may or may not be the case. The victim is, in fact, a woman (adult human female.) Does that statistic matter?

Hate crime or not, the removal matters because living on the margins of society is dangerous—even if they weren’t targeted for being trans. Removing “trans” from a NYT headline drops trans people from the conversation and makes it harder for others to fully understand their experience.

Ahem "There is only 2 genders because that is all we are allowing ourselves to be capable of understanding. Anything other than that is far beyond what we want to believe we should understand, therefore, we refuse to acknowledge that they exist."

I’m surprised that TX would do better than NY on this, but this Texas station still has the original headline and says transgender man and he. It’s far enough down I had to search for the article though. It’s from the @apnews.com. www.kbtx.com/2025/02/16/t...

kbtx.comTransgender man, 24, was tortured for more than a month before his death, police sayAuthorities said the 24-year-old died following repeated acts of violence and torture for more than a month by multiple people.

Honest question: I always thought trans people DON‘T want to be treated differently than Cis folks, in the line of „trans men are men“. So I would need guidance when to say „trans man“ and when to just say „man“.

(3 of 3) ...not considered a hate crime." So that's their argument, which I understand. But I reminded the Editorial Board than in the 19th century, nobody thought those lynchings were the result of enraged mobs of racist Americans spurred on by Jim Crow laws and a hate-filled government. So.

(2 of 3) ... b/c violence not classified as hate crime, they discussed headline could give impression of the motive. "It was later adjusted to 'person' to be more precise, but we kept term in the summary and in the story." Their Standards Assistant also said that current reporting seems to...

UPDATE 2/19: Heard back from editorial board. They state they had some discussions on Sat. eve when story was published about headline, and decided to move 'transgendered man" to the summary bc "we did not know that the gender issue was connected to crimes alleged." Also state that...

UPDATE: This is the only correction note on the NYT article page. So I sent a follow up question directly to the writer credited on this article. Not that he writes the headlines, per se. But he might have some insight. I did directly ask him about...

Online there are multiple versions of headlines shown to different people with small changes like this (through A/B delivery). The print headline is usually the one that matters the most for the historical record because it's physical media and will be archived and preserved as the only version.

The email I received in response. I will be sure to check the article tomorrow to see if they added a correction to the bottom. Or to the headline. "Thank you for contacting The New York Times. We appreciate readers who share their feedback and help us report thoroughly and accurately. ...

"...You have written to the corrections department, and your message will reach the appropriate editor or reporter promptly. If we determine there is a correctable error, a correction will be appended to the article and published in print if necessary. ...

Compliance with evil is more evil than the act. #resist we need a template complaint letter, organize a protest, and take all your cash out the banks on Friday the 28th. And observe the sacred rights of organized fucked.

image ID, cont.: the quote post, from @caulimovirus.bsky.social, shows a screenshot of the headline on the NYT website that now reads, “person killed in new york was tortured for more than a month, police say,” captioned, “now it just says ‘person’” in both posts, the images have alt text. end ID

to be so reduced even in the acknowledgement of the outrageous horror surrounding your death, because doing so might evoke a brief feeling of sympathy in a reader

I saw the "person" headline & clicked because I thought it was a new case with (presumably) an unidentified victim. Once I started to read, it was very obvious what had happened to the headline. It's another form of violence.

The sense of relief emanating from the upper class is so tangible. They’re so happy to stop acknowledging that people unlike them matter, if they even exist at all, that gosh darn it they might just start using slurs again to celebrate.

A horrible thing to happen to anyone. 5 people charged. It was to be an affair of the heart, a chance for sincere love. That was fake, and they killed him over a long period of time. Their attorney says it wasn't a hate crime... They should all burn. It happened in my region of NY State. Sad.

What is the proper etiquette? I am from the south. When I was young, it was common practice to say, “this man, he was black,…“. His race was irrelevant to the story. It is a form of racism. These days I try not to mention race like that. Are there times you should or should not mention gender?

It's not just the removal of "trans" it's also the switch from "man" to "person". Intentionally avoiding the use of gender in cases where it's a _specific_ person with a known identity is a sneaky way to dehumanize them.

Their being trans was a factor in the murder, apparently, and we're living in a time of increased hatred and persecution of trans people, so it's an important and relevant point to include in the headline. To paraphrase... "person murdered, that's not news. Trans man murdered, now that's news".

Language matters. When we let these "small things" slide, the results are disastrous. This is a way of censoring identity and is indirectly permissive of violence against us. Thank you for the post and spreading awareness. We are stronger together 🩷🤍🩵

It's pretty insane (and not possible) that "investigators" have concluded this already... I mean, it may not have instigated it. But if any one of them said a word during that month about their gender, it's a hate crime. Until you have leverage over a witness, you couldn't conclude this.

The entire situation is weird. 5 perpetrators allegedly tortured him to death, the cops quickly figured out exactly who they were somehow, but they're not charged with 1st degree murder. makes me think the cops are telling a story to the public that isn't gonna hold up in key respects.

we'll see... It sucks, but holding off on charges is common and prudent, imo. Generally speaking, the system is just too flawed to convict on higher crime. Even if obvious. The thing that gets me is that the punishment for kidnap/torture should be on par with felony murder.

considering how the nyt was for the genocide in palestine, this is sadly par for the course both passive voice and vague language are their attempts to kill blame on the oppressors, letting them remain comfortable while they get to exterminate minorities en masse. typical bigot supremacist behavior

This is where all the propaganda of TERF shit or calling things "woke" leads to. We MUST be othered then erased cuz people can't miss what they didn't know was there and it's not killing someone if they don't exist. Fuck that. We cannot, will not be erased.

Yes. Or like Matthew Shepherd, who happened to be gay, whose head accidentally came into forceful contact with hard objects when he became entangled in a split rail fence.
