I think writing your stories with AI so you can "focus on reporting" is both disrespectful to your audience and a guarantee that you don't do good reporting, because you're clearly not a fan of quality information. Negative levels of respect for people that do this.

I think much the same can be said for attorneys relying on AI to write their briefs. You are supposed to be a zealous advocate for your client, not someone relying on boilerplate prose and fake citations to persuade a judge.

I don't even understand how that would work. It seems to me that in order to get the LLM to write your story, you basically have to write the story yourself to generate the prompt for the LLM. Unless your intent is to include a bunch of filler to reach a specific word count, I don't see the point.

I assume they take notes during reporting, collect quotes, and then feed the notes and quotes into the LLM, letting the LLM turn incomplete sentences into semi-coherent paragraphs.

Sure, I can absolutely see someone doing that, but Ed's talking about people who claim to do original reporting. Presumably to get an LLM to generate an article based on original reporting, you'd need to provide it all your notes, along with necessary guidance about context & emphasis & structure.

Me: Prompt: please rewrite this transcript in the form of a Thomas Friedman global village think piece CGPT: Sure—please paste the transcript you want rewritten, and I’ll reshape it into a Thomas Friedman–style “global village” think piece.

Finally someone else says it! If your job is any corporate writing/reporting, most of the time is spent Gathering the Information. Actually writing it up takes a fraction of that. Bosses who don’t write for a living have always demanded you do it faster. They expect an LLM to fact-gather. It can’t.

from what I can understand, they feed a bunch of stuff into an LLM, it farts out a story, they tweak it to some degree and then ship it. They then think they are "faster than the competition" or "streamlined." Unclear whether this is actually faster, it certainly is worse bsky.app/profile/elpi...

Most reporting has - for many years now - been devolving into just stenography. Reporting directly what politicians or CEOs say. I'm sure that this problem made the entire industry extra receptive to just offloading the last vestiges of their thinking to random next word predictors.

I agree... for "me" to us AI or that "Flapchat" thing isn't really using my personal talents. And I don't trust that there isn't a way that someone can hack the apps and steal your work before you have a chance to copyright it...
