when our baby was born we asked the pediatrician doing rounds about the then-new RSV vaccine, and she visibly steeled herself before launching into a pre-rehearsed spiel about the efficacy of vaccines and only relaxed when we were like, no, we’re asking because we WANT it

NEW: Babies Are Bleeding to Death as Parents Reject a Vitamin Shot Given at Birth The vitamin K shot, a lifesaving injection given to newborns to prevent uncontrollable bleeding of the brain and intestines, has become collateral damage of the anti-vaccine movement.

Every time vaccines comes up at the pediatrician, the air completely sucks out of the room in the silence between saying which shots are recommended and us saying yes, we'd like them all please

It makes people uncomfortable but since I have twins people often bring up that they’re born early or which was born first etc , my go to line about child birth is like “Thank god no one died when my lads were born, if you can make it through all of that and no one is dead then you’re doing great”

I surprised the hell out of our pediatrician by asking if my kid could get her measles vax EARLY (there was an outbreak in our area). He advised against it because it hadn't been tested on that age group but he said it was the first time he'd ever gotten THAT request about a vaccine!

Spoke to the vaccine nurse at a parent event recently because my kid is terrified of needles. The way she relaxed when she realised I wanted help getting *more* jabs in him. It's grim out there. (She was also great and genuinely helpful.)

During Trump 1.0 I made a joke to our pediatrician about the vaccine possibly giving my kid autism, and I should have known this would happen from my own experience in retail - but I could see the doctor take a full second to try and evaluate whether I was joking.

Right? Who wants to be sick? Who wants to watch kids stuck at home sniffling and coughing and whatever? It’s unnecessary suffering even if it isn’t life threatening! And it’s inconvenient!

When my kids were born they routinely gave them the Vit K jab after birth and after my first child was born they gave me a jab to protect future children against my RhNeg blood and a rubella jab because I wasn’t immune. They explained what they were doing but there was no expectation I would refuse!

I think about that moment every time I’m picking her up from school and wonder how many of the other kids she’s playing with have insane parents

I got a dog and the foster person warned me about vets; "they like to push the medicines, but they contain a lot of toxins". So I'm kinda thinking of just preemptively getting the rabies vaccine before it comes back the way measles is.

I've told this on here before but I know a woman (smart, but not educated or connected to anyone who is- she has a GED) and she vaxxed her 3 now-adult kids but hasn't vaxxed her 2nd grader because now she's "more educated about health." By speakers who have been coming to her evangelical church. 1/

Preaching the evils of fluoride and vaccines and singing the praises of essential oils and other woo. This church has helped her in other ways (pitched in money to get her an apartment to leave an abusive marriage, etc) and she + her kids are very involved. So it's super complicated. 2/

But I think this horseshit is spreading as a quasi-religious belief in evangelical circles and it's very hard to disentangle it from people's other religious beliefs, especially when they don't have personal connections with anyone who knows better.

Our kiddo was born in 2014. The dod did the same thing then, stealed herself to give us the spiel- it was only when we said "its ok, we believe in science" that she relaxed and we had an adult conversation about the vaccination schedule. Boulder County, Colorado.

I always open these conversations with "I WANT ALL THE SHOTS". When my kid asked what the HPV vaccine was for, I opened my explanation with "what if you could get a shot that prevents cancer? 💫💫💫 (I also talked about HPV and reminded them that, in this family, we get ALL THE SHOTS.)

Had a similar thing with our oldest when we first met with the pediatrician where we asked about vaccines and he tensed up and took a deep breath and basically said if we weren’t vaccinating he couldn’t be our pediatrician and we said “good” and you could just watch the tension drain out of him

First licensed in the US in 1995, or about 8-9 years after I had my case of varicella. You can bet your ass that I got the shingles vaccination roughly as soon as I was eligible to. Both does kicked my ass for about 36 hours, but actual shingles would be about a billion times worse.

I feel for them. I preface every question at the pediatrician l’s office with “I promise I’m not one of those crazy anti-vax people who thinks they know better than doctors.” Like, I almost certainly overcompensate and they may still think I’m crazy but in a different way.

I am glad I made sure all my grandkids got all their vaccines, including the HPV and RSV. Two got them late (one premie, one with a heart defect), but both got them the week their doctors said it was safe. Why have a child if you aren’t going to protect them?

My oldest son married a woman 10 years older than himself who already had two kids by two dads, one of them deaf at 9 months old though she hadn’t noticed. So it was clear they needed a grown up to help. Luckily our other sons married well. 😊

We were supposed to have an interview to get a pediatrician to accept us at patients and be there at delivery. “What’s it about?” “Vaccines, etc” “Huh?” “What vaccines you want, some other things” “All of them?” “Great you’re accepted”

I nearly lost my second from RSV as a newborn - I was thrilled when I saw the nasal RSV vaccine under research! With autoimmune conditions I and my children have had to be careful not to space vaccines too close together, but by gum I will always be 100% vaccine!

I had my son in 2020. When they came around to discuss vaccines I was like we will take any of the ones you have and any clinical trials you’ve got to. Load him up.

Yeah same, the nurses were visibly relieved when we told them we wanted every vaccine they can give my son lol

I happened to be in the room when a client of mine had just brought her baby home, and her mom was looking at the vaccine schedule intensely. She laid down the paper and opened her mouth, and my client held up a hand and said “it’s not up for discussion. He’s getting them all.“ could’ve hugged her.

I know you probably already know this, but the HPV vaccine(s) is/are also available right now. I REALLY want to see some cancers just cease to exist.
