when someone representing socialism on a national stage says “I’m a capitalist” they should be challenged by the socialist with the threat of removal from the socialist club I’m surprised this is so controversial, asking them to clarify “I’m a capitalist” seems quite reasonable

Talking with my coworker about the mandatory hearing tests because we work in a factory Him: “I figure if I didn’t lose my hearing shooting drag along howitzers in Afghanistan in the 80s I wouldn’t have lost it now” Me, a fan of the podcast Blow Back: “wait, … where? … when!?”

There was a memorial dinner held in DC a month after Savimbis murder where right wing politicians and religious leaders eulogized him , this is absurd and bad and my take away from so many Blowback seasons is these people and their ideology are still around and seem to still be winning

You can't expect the New York Times to give any attention to a story about the president being credibly accused of violent rape when the story breaks so close to an election. It's not like we're talking about something *really* important, like email security protocols.

I haven’t done that … but I did pitch to my local DSA group yesterday that we should just give people beans at every event “Thanks for coming to the tabling/canvassing/protest/study group here’s your complimentary beans 🫘 “

The increase in fuel prices isn't what makes the US stand out though: price increases there are similar to other market economies. The reason that per capita costs in the US are so high is the high consumption of fuels per person and lack of progress in reducing reliance on oil.

Related to this I was developing an eco-phenomenological idea that I smashed this with an apocryphal Louis Pasteur phrase in to: The map is not the terrain, the terrain is everything And then I dropped out of grad school to move to California and work in a Tofu factory, so there’s my origin story

A loooong time ago I got a degree in geography and there’s a hip phrase a philosophical group of geographers, like I was, love: The map is not the terrain I also worked very briefly for the US place names and map update service in school We would sometimes have to “ground truth” things

Ok new frustration, my day job is managing industrial food logistics and supply chain stuff Which requires a lot of emails and things shipping on time Very Recently , I’ll email someone “did this ship today like you said it would a few weeks ago?” And I get what is clearly an automated response

In a professional capacity, the biggest impact AI has had is that it slows me down and makes everything more annoying bc I have to deal with my coworkers bad use of it Verbose emails, interrupting meetings to ask the AI, AI note takers who are wrong, breaking spreadsheets, people repeating it to me

Like sometimes if there’s an old building on a map , or a waterfall or something , someone would have to physically go out to it to see and measure to confirm the map So this is kind of like that, I need another human to go LOOK and see if something physically happened

But these AI intermediaries is causing friction with the human to human request or ground truthing and therefor will necessarily delay or cause problems in the physical world I’m really not happy about the sycophantic mad lib robot having real world affects

Which will make US manufacturing worse and drive up the cost of everything because of production schedule failures People will have hours cut Should manufacturing a grocery logistics be so lean? NO But they are and any miscommunication this causes will have outsized ripple effects for our food

That’s just reconfirming the previous email “order confirmation attached! Your order is scheduled to ship 10/26” And I’ll ask again, “yes, today, that’s why I’m asking if that’s still true” And I’ll just get the same generic response! Clearly no one is reading my email and checking the shipment

Like we are all used to this behavior with regular customer service but this is B2B like tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in business that *has* to be on time And if we let the AI do it badly then we’ll go through a lot of manufacturing stresses and production failures

LMAO he made his little AI too sassy and it hurt his feelings He needed help redoing an excel spreadsheet password and showed it a screenshot asking where to click and it was “obviously you’re not looking at the screen because you could clearly see this isn’t correct”

I was waiting for someone to mention this and also that as early as the 1930s the British intelligence and later American was largely funding the Muslim Brotherhood as a counter to Secular independent movements and communists, especially before and during Nasser

Michael J. Stern@michaeljstern.bsky.social

This is true. Qatar is widely believed to be the biggest financial backer of the Muslim Brotherhood.
