bluesky request. do not follow or reward quote-doomers. people who quote an article and only add something like "you have no idea how bad this is" or "it's over" or "say goodbye to everything you love". they succeed from your stress. they're bringing you down with them. stay awake; not like this.

I am sorry brother, just some times I want to yell at the void being the internet in hopes of findiing other people who are also horrified by the enshitificaiton of our society

This is actually great content for mastodon too. It might not get quite the same traction over there, given there's just so much MORE unsolicited advice and condescension available, but I think this content would be a great contribution.

I think this is wise advice. Certainly I've been following it. If I post or quote something alarming, it's generally because I think I've spotted a salient weakness :)

Look, I’m no expert but I come from two families of holocaust survivors and my generational trauma DNA is strong, so if I can offer anything, it’s this: you already know it’s bad, there’s nothing more to be gained in wallowing. You have to find a way to be at peace, especially when you’re at war.

On the other hand you have a Russian asset for homeland security, a child sex trafficker as AG, a fossil fuel guy for Energy, a spineless weathervane for Sec of State, a Fox host for DOD head and Musk cutting everything. Kinda hard to be cheery with that train wreck staring us in the face...

I think this is a tough time for a lot of us and there's a lot of fear in the air. But yes, constant doom and gloom can wreck your psyche. I would love to see a temporary mute button for this sort of thing.

Here here. The local paper asked me how how tariffs would impact my business and my response was tariffs could be bad but until we see how they are made I can't comment speculate. It's just going to add to the doom.

“Quote doomers” Love that label! It’s the label I didn’t know I needed. YES. Engaging with that kind of posts will reward the wrong behaviours. Culture is shaped by the behaviours we reward, and the ones we tolerate. Let’s not tolerate those, not feed into that way be in virtual social spaces.

I agree that it isn’t helpful, but there are still people in denial about the consequences. People who think “the law” will stop everything or that military won’t cooperate. Whatever is going to happen; it won’t be like 2016.

I've been following back people in my industry.... and then gradually unfollowing all those that do this. Every now and then wonder where all the depressing headlines in feed have appeared from and realise it's one person just reposting over and over. Unfollow and move on.

Similarly, endless hype on the other end of the scale is something I won't miss. Influencers pushing products, crypto, breathless AI news There's a real burnout effect from consuming too much doomerism/hype, a way to truly filter that out would be amazing

Yes!! Thank you. The absence of this is one of the things I liked about BlueSky until recently when it started popping up here. I will not engage with accounts who do this and may block them for my own sanity.

It's a fine line. What bothers me most about the "we're fucked" posture is its passivity and, I suspect, its neediness (they seem to want to be reassured?). I'm all for talking about difficult things on here, but people, lose the passive posture. That's our job now. bsky.app/profile/lids...

It’s the passive mode that irritates me, and the laziness. Knowing things are bad doesn’t elicit only one response. What function does “we’re fucked” serve? I hear it and want to say “when things get worse you’re not going to be leading us, I’m going have to lead you”

My brain supplies those quotes all on its own. Make tea: "you have no idea how bad this is" Binge watch entire series: "it's over" Drop my sandwich mid-mustarding: "say goodbye to everything you love" (But seriously, excellent advice.)

I agree! But also I am compelled note your profile has your domain name listed. ngl, that made me lol a little bit! (Panic dot com on a post nominally about not panicking = winning!)

I much prefer when people give their view, take, and an actual summation (or basic gist) of something, and the link to an article serves basically as a bibliography/footnote. Otherwise, the post is just clickbait in my opinion.

Brings to mind the quote “My desire to stay well-informed is at odds with my desire to stay sane.” Maybe there’s some balance somewhere. Not going to stick my head in the sand to current events, but would be more beneficial for quotes to take more of a “Shit sucks but here’s how we can help…”

afaik the labels would be entirely optional, I believe they're applied via a moderation service you subscribe to, or a custom feed you add - I'm not entirely sure how that works yet

Like literally normalising the idea of "dopamine cost" when reading posts on social media. Give each post a rating of 1-5 with AI sentiment analysis (because AI is actually very good at stuff like that) and you can literally be like "Ok, I'm feeling burnt out today, gonna be a 1 day on the socials"

Also means that people might end up toning down the hype when they're writing to reach a wider audience. Which absolutely isn't censorship in any way, in fact, shows in a positive light how you can convey exactly the same information freely but in a nuanced, more effective fashion

Yeah, interestingly, I understand that a lot of people have come here to get away from a very specific environment on Twitter, but shouldn't that mean we talk about other stuff in here? Not just the hateful people over there and how everything sucks? 90% of what I read here is just that

Give everyone a chance to settle down and yourself a chance to follow more people/feeds and build up your algorithm. Every time a big wave of Twitter users migrate everyone buzzes about this or that. You can also block the word "Twitter" for a few days if you're really peeved!

It takes a while. Bluesky isn't like Twitter - it doesn't recommend posts or accounts for you. Instead, your following feed will only show accounts you follow. To find other stuff, you have to join feeds other users make and then you can add those feeds to your home page. You can search for feeds!

I look up good news specifically lol I got tired of doomerism and I think there's a part of corporate media that wants us hopeless. Cable news reminds me of this I use to watch it ALL THE TIME. Once I quit I felt so much better I was miserable and sad when I watched it.
