What could a "social internet" look like? Here's one example: Try navigating to a bsky.social handle directly in your browser! Now, it'll take you straight to the Bluesky profile. Your profile here is your home on the social internet.

Experimental feature: If you're using a custom domain already, and you want your own website to redirect to your Bluesky profile too: Set your domain to be a CNAME of `redirect.bsky.app` and we'll redirect your domain to your Bluesky profile URL.

could we do something like `at.domain.tld` e.g. `at.runspired.com` or even `@runspired.com` so that my website is still my website but there's a shorthand that redirects?

Any solution to redirect my old bluesky address (#https://bsky.app/profile/alexvicious.bsky.social) to my new (#https://bsky.app/profile/alexvicious.fr) with my domain ? Thanks in advance

Users should add so-called ALIAS/ANAME records for their apex domains as CNAME records are not allowed. Still, I wonder how you'd prepare the TLS server certificates for users' domains on your redirector.

I'm completely confused how a “certificate has expired” error could be in any way related to the DNS returning a CNAME, but every time I try to understand HTTPS/TLS/X.509, my brain just begs for the sweet release of death.

The DNS entry being a CNAME is sort of irrelevant. It's just saying which server is asked for the certificate. Until recently, Bluesky's redirect web server returned valid certificates for our custom domains (which they know as our handles), and it is no longer the case.

One detail of adding my own domain that surprised me is that my bluesky handle became immediately available for squatting - I re-registered it, but it would be cool if I could have multiple handles without multiple accounts that all funnel to my primary username URL

Apparently it looks like every single other social feed has looked for about the last 20 years. Almost identical to a Twitter profile too. What exactly is supposed to be so revolutionary here?

How would a trending tab turn this into a dumpster fire? all it would do is let you know what people are yapping about, hell i would be happy with a feeds esk thing where it’s customizable/optional, just having that as an option would be nice instead of a hard no.

A trending tab? You could just use Twitter for that. I thought the advantage of BlueSky was "No Algorithm" or something like that (plus, people tend to not use Hashtags in the first place).

That wasn’t how trending worked on twitter to begin with, a lot of the time if a lot of people talked about 1 thing it would appear, was very handy for anything that was being talked about. I would rather die than rejoin that nazi site, but it’s just a thing I would like to see again

Theo literally how? It just showed you what was happening on that day/ what people thought about it. With all due respect, I do not understand what in the hell you are on about lol

Twitter's Trending was often toxic, encouraged dogpiling, and spread misinformation. Also it kind of goes against bsky's "choose your algorithm/customize your community" system. Just one example of some problems below. Now, maybe custom unofficial Trendings could be created, like custom feeds?

mediaite.comOPINION: Ellie Kemper And Why Twitter's Trending Topics Are ToxicThe Ellie Kemper incident is just one example of why Twitter adding "context" hasn't fixed the problem with their toxic trending topics feature.

Nope, that's exactly what they are proclaiming as being the future... Exactly the same thing social media websites have all been doing almost identically for the last 20 years it's apparently an exciting new concept to these guys...

It's a for-profit corp, they are going to do it. But the tech and some of the software is FOSS so you can spin your own stuff up if you want. I know not ideal but that's what everyone had to do to have a website back in the 90's

I'm going to answer the philosophical rhetorical here. For me a social internet would like a lot like LiveJournal used to. Its structure would be fairly horizontal, with space for communities where equal participants can share thoughts, plus a personal "blog" space, visually simple, easy to read.

Just feedback from an average user here: I don’t see how this is any different than how YouTube channel urls are standardized, or how you can redirect a website to any other social media platform. Maybe somthing more technical is going on here, but it’s not too interesting. Love the app.

Yeah it's just a wild-card DNS entry for a CNAME record. WebApp uses name value to look for a matching handle and renders. It is convenient though. And when added to federation idea is you just give your your "social handle". Except at signs aren't valid in DNS so... *shrug*
