it didn't even occur to me that the government might try to execute someone a second time if they torture the person but fail to kill them during a first botched attempt. truly grotesque and a moral stain upon all involved.

A judge applied the law & ordered the state to carry out a sentence. The state tried to kill her as the law required. Now the state is working hard to keep her alive so as not to be cruel & unusual. Once she recovers, they will attempt to kill her again, as the law requires. Do I have this right?

This is my f*cked up, insanely cruel state of Tennessee. Just looked up what countries still practice this barbarism and we’re up there with China, North Korea, the Saudis, Japan (sad), Yemen, etc. There is something so wrong with this nation with the boots of rich, white, male, thugs on our necks.

If a jury/state decides to execute someone, do it painlessly, in the most efficient means possible. Had horses; one, severely injured had to put him down. Hired a backhoe operator to dig a whole. My vet prepared a shot. I walked away crying. Heard a loud thump; it was instant. He did not suffer. 😢

my man the government literally assassinated several civil rights leaders + gary webb obama merc'd a u.s. citizen with a drone to say nothing of what washington has done to foreigners in other countries (abu ghraib, the genocidal bombing of north korea, etc.) "morality" has never existed in d.c.

Here’s what I don’t get, what’s the criteria that makes this method or any, “humane”. Seems to me the most humane would be the swiftest. Not the most “sciency”.

And the kicker is, those doing the torturing and killing likely feel utterly righteous about what they've done.

After 2 botched attempts, they took her to a hospital emergency room to try to save her life, so that once they figure out what went wrong, they can try killing her for a 3rd time. This seems like a What Would Dolly Do? moment, Tennessee. I think she would commute this woman's death sentence.

Joe Biden banned executions using the pentobarbital protocol because of how painful & cruel it is.. But Trump overturned that as soon as he got elected 💣 Christa Pike's failed lethal injection attempt: What is pentobarbital & why did Biden ban it? | The Independent share.google/2Tu7aw1u1EeO...

There used to be a time when it was "God's Will" that you should walk free if an execution failed. But that was a time when execution was "Death by Hanging" which frequently went awry.

If you’ve ever cracked that Bible and actually read to understand, you wouldn’t want to be associated with those terrorists. Unless, of course, you’re a terrorist also.

Apparently they have had to go to a 1 drug IV solution since pharmaceutical companies won't sell them the other 2 drugs for moral reasons. And they have to find someone that can insert an iv correctly.

Australia abolished the death penalty half a century ago while the US is in the top 5 nations for execution with Saudi Arabia, Iran, China. Somalia A cruel and barbaric nation .

The fact that Trump and his goons made it a priority to reverse the pentobarbital ban supports once again this administration’s “Cruelty for Cruelty’s Sake” policies and practices

My guess is sheer incompetence. Most HCPs would refuse to assist with a lethal injection because it violates the Hippocratic oath. Whoever they found to do the honors in this case was probably from the bottom of the barrel.

ps. Did you know? The USA is a moral stain on the world, ever since 9/11? And Israel, which already was an Apartheid state, became one on 10/7? Do you understand the implications for your nations?

Capital punishment itself is a stain upon society, and it is fiscally irresponsible. Because The State ends up assuming the cost of the Appeals Process, the final cost of executing someone far outweighs the cost of imprisonment for his or her natural life.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn called for the state to return to the electric chair as a means of execution. "the answer is simple: bring back the electric chair and deliver justice for these victims swiftly." imagine the wretched state of her mind to say this. Pike should have the death penalty commuted.

to suffer through it once is truly horrifying but twice is beyond comprehension, to do it a third time would be a crime against humanity itself. i am not saying commute her sentence, just do not try to execute her again.

Worse the Governor stated how the state needed to make sure to kill quickly, follow the constitution but did not, at any point, state that there is also an obligation to be humane. At this point if they try to kill her again there is little humanity left in our nation. ENOUGH.

Double Jeopardy should apply in this case. If you cant be tried for the same crime twice, you should not have to go through two executions. Even writing that statement makes my brain hurt. Pure craziness going on in this country right now.

We have concentration camps in America, masked, armed and unidentifiable Gestapo thugs kidnapping people and murdering Americans on our streets, and SCOTUS just gave our government the right to traffic human beings. There isn’t much that surprises me anymore… the fascists are running amok. VOTE!

I was always under the impression that, if you fail to put down a person after trying numerous times, don’t they have to go free? I’m not condoning murder, but, multiple tries isn’t good either.,

This brings up a horrible memory for me. Over 20 yrs ago, I was at the vet b/c my beloved cat had severe diabetes and had to be euthanized. The first shot didn't take b/c his blood stream was so saturated with sugar, it took a 2nd shot to finally let him have peace. It was horrible for us both! 😢

1943 Supreme Court decision, "In Re Resweber" held 5-4 that "death by installments" doesn't violate Double Jeopardy nor 8th Amendment because botched executions are just happy accidents & not intentional. Otherwise billions could get away with murder if they knew they couldn't be executed twice.

they’ve done it with people they tortured when they couldn’t locate a vein, got a dosage wrong or miscalculated, botched electrocutions are horrible, none ever leave the room alive with the exception of TN’s 2 most recent attempts, death penalty supporters will tell you the extra pain is deserved

I find it repugnant that, on top of everything else, a small number of people are invited to come and watch it take place like some kind of freak show. I also question the state of mind of those who go along. A stain on American society and it has no place in a civilized country.

The Eighth Amendment to the constitution, part of the Bill of Rights, states, “….nor cruel or unusual punishments inflicted”. I cannot fathom that ‘third (injection) time’s a charm’ or ‘now let’s use an electric chair’ is not ‘cruel or unusual’.

”Crime and punishment are conventionally spoken of as if they were opposites, yet both are committed in the name of morality and justice, and both use violence as the means by which to attain those ends. So not only are their end identical, so are their means.”(Gilligan, 2003)

Reminiscent of Mary , Queen of Scotts botched execution in 1587, almost 500 years in the past. State executions are still inhumane , gruesome and ineffective .

Have you seen the cancer in our government? We bombed girls school and weddings, bombed civilian fishing boats daily, kidnap people off streets & let them die in prison camps, we let pregnant women die by preventing medical care. There would be a moral stain if there was any morality left.

They carried out a death sentence twice. They had their chance, now let her go and reflect on the merits of the death penalty more widely

A person languishing on death row since having committed a crime as a child, no less. (But then Mr Torture Memo has some serious thoughts: Why don’t machine gun her to death straight from the hospital?)

On top of that she's been locked up 30+ years already for a murder that occurred when she was 18. How many punishments will she get?

Serious question - doesn’t that constitute cruel and inhumane treatment? Shouldn’t her term be converted to life in prison - if she survives this? I don’t care what someone’s beliefs are re the death penalty or no death penalty. Doing what they did AGAIN is beyond the pale.

Lately there seems to be abundance of moral stains. The big reveal will be in 2029, when ICE detention center abuses and horrors will come to light. The suffering of cubans because of draconian sanctions, the school and wedding bombings in Iran. Gaza… This is a cruel regime.

But executing them if they commit murder is? Why? Define the moral difference between taking away someone's freedom and choice forever versus executing them after breaking the social contract and taking an innocent life.

An execution that's remotely humane. Phenobarbital generally just stops your heart and breathing because your brain shuts off. Either they had bad access and drugs bled into tissue or the drugs were expired because States are having a hard time getting phenobarbital from the makers.

Witnesses in the room report that Pike could be heard snoring and gasping for air for more than an hour after the lethal injections were administered. At one point she screamed that there was a spot in her arm that was “burning and felt like it was about to burst open.”

Killing a criminal doesn’t bring back the victims. There have been enough wrongful executions and botched executions to say enough. It’s nothing more than cruel and vengeful punishment.

Also, the average time from sentencing to execution in this country is 20 years. That’s 20 years of torture for the victims’ families. Life without parole would be better.

Putting someone in prison for life doesn't bring victims back either. So this argument means nothing. Take a life, give your life

The government should not be executing anyone. But, until that day, the government should get one chance to carry out the sentence. If the government fucks up, the prisoner goes free -- with lifetime medical coverage for the aftereffects of the botched execution. 1/

Think about it: If you're pulled over for speeding, you don't get out of the ticket by telling the cop, "Let me go back and drive the same route again at the proper speed." Robbery: "This time I'll just ask for spare change without showing a weapon." 2/2

The most painless form of execution, scientifically proven, is judicial hanging where the odontoid process of the second cervical vertebra breaks and punctures the spinal cord. Assuming that the hanging process is done properly. But we have medications that could do the job with least pain.

Did it occur to SCOTUS that this is the 2nd time that this has happened in Tennessee this year, with two botched executions, that they could have said nope wait a minute. Instead, it was State’s rights to torture this woman, but State’s rights may not apply to voting? Why pay Federal taxes then?

There’s actually a Supreme Court decision from 1947 involving a death-sentenced teenager named Willie Francis on this issue under the Eighth Amendment (Louisiana ex rel. Francis v Resweber). The Court split 4-1-4 on it! The extent of suffering imposed is a factor to be considered.

With The Creature being the exception! It should be tried for crimes against humanity and the killing of innocent seafarers in the Caribbean and Pacific, innocent schoolchildren in Iran, plus peaceful American protesters and whatever comes out of the tRumpstein Files. Finally, for Treason!

During Trump’s first term they hastened the number of federal executions. Trump LIKES HAVING THE POWER OF LIFE AND DEATH. Capital punishment should be abolished.

I know during his last term they executed more than double the number of people who had been executed under federal law since the moratorium on the death penalty was lifted. I don't know where it ended up, comparatively, but the rate at which he was executing people was alarming.

I can't find it. I hope Bsky didn't scrub it. Jack Smith release an email/text that Epstein and Trump exchanged. From what I could glean, Trump was in China raping kids, and videoed one girl being tortured, Epstein said he liked it. We have the WORST person alive in OUR White House.

The death penalty is a grotesque moral stain upon all involved, regardless of how well or poorly it is carried out.

Between this Krista Pike nightmare, deadly ICE raids and concentrations camps, the abrupt shutdown of USAID, reduced funding for WIC, massive cuts to science and medicine and the push for cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, it's clear that Trump and the GOP are intent on killing us. #VoteBlue

Is the irony lost that they are saving the woman's life so the state can try to kill her again. shouldn't she be released on principle? Do the religious zealots not see it as an act of their gods mercy

This also seems to occur over and over in some courts these days, if trump &/or his personal DOJ are involved. I understand they now plan to relitigate the Nixon investigation. 🤣🤣

Somehow death penalty proponents equate Christianity with vengeance and punishment. The same reason why an evanglical bishop lost his church when he announced he stopped believing in hell. People are obsessed with punishing others. www.npr.org/2018/04/15/6...
