I would absolutely rather talk about astrophysics than health — partly because it’s where my expertise lies and partly because it’s more fun — but as a human person with a frustratingly biological existence (and friends and family who are also humans) it’s real hard to just ignore this dire stuff

And now this. My father had polio when he was a child in the 1930s. He thankfully survived. Many did not. This is, well, evil. Let's not mince words. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/h...

The idea that powerful people will soon be working to subject an entire nation to much more sickness and suffering by undermining or even taking away some of the most miraculously effective tools humanity has against disease is truly horrifying

They’re working their way back to a livestock model: more’n half of the mammalian mass on earth consists of animals humans either eat or enjoy. This structure, transposed onto people, is becoming again the model of nations. We won’t be encouraged to outlive our net positives. [Thus spake Answerman.]

sadly, frighteningly, it’s a cycle of corruption and depravity at the expense of ordinary americans, all for more profit and further entrenching their ideal of creating systematic wage slavery

I genuinely believe some of them are psychopaths. They’re too smart not to understand the science. They just don’t care because there’s money and power to be had in lying.

It's not about education, it's about emotion and power. Do you think RFK Jr isn't educated? They've appealed to and roused people's emotions to gain power. Academics is still one of the most bigoted and segregated milieus. If education fixes hearts, it would be the most diverse workplace.

When there is no Medicare or Medicaid left, & no-one can afford insurance, & insurers won't pay anyway, presumably people will just have to linger then die at home, "safe" from vaccines? Difficult to know whether Trumps Cabinet are mad, deluded, sadistic or have shares in funeral parlours, or all 4

What do they gain from this? Surely they don’t truly believe vaccines are useless. I will never understand this level of hard-headed ignorance, or cruelty, or whatever the heck it is.

I think it’s partly the “I’m exceptional and healthy, therefore it won’t impact me or anyone I love” magical thinking and arrogance. Good old arrogance. They think they’re somehow smarter than people devoting their entire educations and careers to this stuff. Never want to admit to limitations.

Them and their base spent the entire lockdown pandemic time solidifying a belief that vaccines didn't work to solve that issue and it left an open door to the whack jobs who think no vaccines are safe. If they get away with revoking vaccines from the market they're going to learn a horrible lesson.

Well said. Powerful people who think they know more than they do because they have a loud voice, money, or a fat ego (often all inherited, not their own expertise).

The WHO failed to entirely eradicate polio because some illiterate halfwits in Pakistan's tribal areas believed a conspiracy theory that the vaccine was secretly designed to strelilise them. The next health secretary of the United States is as stupid as those people.
