Here's another bit of conventional wisdom Zohran completely blew away: His speech was at well above a 10th-grade level. It was complex, erudite, punctuated by deep and fluent references. You don't have to condescend to voters with baby talk! Part of re-establishing norms is speaking like an adult.

Ya know what was missing from most of it? The word "I." And when he did use it, it was to take clear and proud ownership of the terms that had been thrown at him as pejoratives.

Of course, you need to have a vocabulary of more than 500 words (cough Trump cough) to do so. Oh, and reporters and politicians alike: The meaningless phrase “move forward” is just a synonym for “uh.”

I always got irrationally annoyed when Dems (Obama did this a lot) get trained to cut the "ing" off of words to sound folksy ("talkin', doin', hopin'")

His speaking style is extremely effective for dealing with Trump and the current GOP - he can joyfully eviscerate them without stooping to their schoolground bully level of discourse. Obama's style was an effective response to Bush/Cheney, and Mamdani's style is the perfect response to Trump.

The best message is to use both academic & simple language at the same time. Saying an erudite adult word like you said, followed by a synonym in a simple language. That helps the uneducated voter to understand the message, while acquiring new vocabulary Not everybody had the chance of an education

This is very true, and there are a lot of really good reasons why. I think a huge part is that, due to age and not being born in the U.S., he doesn't have the Obama-as-template fixation that so many on the left think is the default for a "good" speech. bsky.app/profile/jame...

I have actually not seen Mamdani give a formal speech and what I’ll say is that unlike so many of his peers he is not trying to mimic anyone in his delivery. He is simply being himself and it is very effective.

More broadly, I would also say that, both rhetorically and in cadence, he has many other traditions to tap into, so he doesn't need to appropriate AAVE speech-making in order to sound passionate or move people. (Interestingly, this was also true in his raps being specific to Ugandan culture.)

In terms of _content_, as we see with nods to Debs and Nehru, he's deeply comfortable with socialism. This makes sense not just because of his father's work, but also the cultural heritage on his mom's side; the region of India our families are from has always been a hotbed of leftist activism.

Sigh. I’ve written #Speeches for Dem Appointees inside big Fed Agencies (not for Dem Political candidates—too Skeevy for my liking.) Can confirm that @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social + his StratComm team are really talented. If the OG DemParty StratComm Industrial Complex doesn’t learn from this …. 🥴

Yes!! The current administration talks like idiots! You see Obama, Clinton and even former Republicans speaking and you absolutely see the difference in intelligence. They think they look the part and then they open their mouths and show that they’re stupid.

His message discipline was incredible but mostly I think the consulting/pundit class hasn’t put together that’s it’s the product of actual organizing—debating theory and method and persuading people and trusting your audience and… all products of organizing

Ok, now he’s in charge of picking up trash, dealing with rat infestations and making sure trains run on time, with no prior operational experience even though he is an articulate speaker. What I’ve never understood about elections is voters never approach it like a hiring decision, which it is

Anyone who took the temperature of mainstream Bluesky commenters over the last year in a constructive way would have understood this. As a cohort, they were way ahead of Dem leaders, the pollsters they rely on, and the centrist consultants and pundits they listen to, on how politics was shifting.

True, it wasn't about what grade level you speak with but it is the message you get from Bernie, AOC and now Mamdani... And it's the message that Trump stole and lied about... Break the establishment. Represent the people. Improve lives!
