being anti AI is a luxury belief only available to first world people, especially Americans imagine how important machine translation is for people whose first languages aren't that common

all contemporary computer translation services use language models more or less identical to the usual suspects, they've used machine learning algorithms for something like 15 years and transformer architectures specifically for over half a decade.

So they are just lookup functions with a bloated name. Intelligence would allow a word derived from two root meanings to be worked out. AI only does that if it’s told what the answer is from its data. It can’t ’work out’ anything.

i regularly portmanteau words together to express some composite meaning when i’m working because i trust the robots to figure it out more than i do actual people

oomfie can we not do chomsky propaganda in this thread universal grammar has been dead and buried for like 30 years

im not a chomsky fan here, it's just one of the biggest open problems in linguistics still lol

oh no i’m sure there are a bunch of linguists who still work on it, it just seems to have permanently lost the argument

you'd hope but you are kind of combining multiple things here there are people who believe in poverty of the stimulus who aren't UG heads, and there are minimalist UG heads and maximalist UG heads, and everyone is secretly a minimalist UG head

Still waffling on thinking documents will somehow explain why AI makes up shit rather than admitting it makes up shit for reasons you don’t understand. You don’t understand how they work because if you did, you could fix them. You can’t and so until tou can, you are guessing just as much as AI does.

thought experiment time: could you explain how the prhase "Colorless green ideas sleep furiously" is both grammatically correct and semantically meaningless?

Only semantically meaningless in particular contexts! In fact, in the context of this post it has a semantic meaning
