The rumors about Robert Eggers's take on R + J are strange, and should be ignored. The movie isn't even on his IMDB yet. It’s obviously extremely early. But let’s remember that Eggers has only released 4 full-length films. They're all worth watching, even if…

…only The Lighthouse bears any real chance of maintaining importance long term. I don't think his output quality or judgement is predictable yet. That said, his other films are definitely interesting and probably earn him a little deference if he actually decides to get really weird with R + J.

@gruber.foo The AirPods 4 & 5 cases with wireless charging do have magnets, they're just the apple watch charger magnets. And the reason they don't have MagSafe magnets is because the cases are too small, the radius of the MagSafe magnets would exceed the case size substantially.

There's no slowing down frontier models by regulation that wouldn't lead to regulatory capture. But we could simply force all AI model companies to release their model weights openly. It's the world's data after all and nothing would slow their funding/progress more effectively and universally.

Slow down frontier model development. Bring open weights to current frontier. Build out local inference providers, stabilize hardware prices, focus on cost and token throughput for a bit. Get our software updated to handle what's being thrown at us. I would not mind spending a beat on distribution.

There should be criminal charges.

Wow. Turns out another OpenAI agent swarm was busy spamming and exploiting RubyGems way back in May, within days of the previously uncovered Wiki attacks: simonwillison.net/2026/Sep/12/...

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

After a sudden diagnosis and major surgery, a young Pokémon fan required a mechanical pump to keep his heart beating. To help him cope, his care team 3D-printed a miniature “PokeMate 3” version of the heart device he now relies on and attached it to his favorite Pikachu.

In the 1980s, let's say 1987, it typically cost $29.95 for a copy of a feature film on VHS. That's not all that far off from a UHD Blu-ray copy today, at least at MSRP. Which is to say, buying a movie today is comically cheap. $30 in 1987 is equivalent to about $88.50 in today's dollars.

So basically if you think things like movies and games cost too much today, the reality is they are ridiculously cheap. The real problem is you're getting fucked by the ownership class, or whatever you want to call employers. You should be making so much more money for what you do.

Of course, you don't feel like it's cheap because the working class has been so massively, ridiculously screwed over starting principally in the late 1970s where increases in worker wages stopped going up to match increases in worker productivity.

(Actually it really started in the 60's) Even if you ignore productivity, minimum wage should be about $12.35/hr by inflation alone. But if you account for productivity, it would be nearly double that, ~$23.84 which is over 7x the minimum wage when a new movie cost ~$30.

If you go by algorithmic media you might believe that everyone hates Supergirl and it's sooo terrible. 54% Tomatometer! But the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 76%. That's really good! It's also a reminder that critics and algorithmic media are garbage 95% of the time and should be ignored.

For my part, one of my all time favorite movies has a 30% tomatometer score and a 63% popcornmeter. I can recognize its strengths and many weakness, but that doesn't change the fact that I enjoy it every time I watch it and it still has one of the best movie soundtracks of its era. (It's The Saint)

I plan to watch Supergirl when I can stream it to my home theater. Based on what I've seen people saying, I expect it to be a misunderstood movie with some unimportant flaws that will be a nice addition to a series of comic-based movies that feel better than the genre has, overall, in years.

That doesn't mean you're going to like the movie, it's just a reminder that you should form your own opinion on things or at the very least, establish an extremely strong reputational relationship with sources of opinion instead of being mind-controlled by techbro slop feeds.
