Had a surprisingly quick and pleasant arrival at Heathrow, on my way to Android Dev Summit tomorrow! Shockingly, this might be the first ever Google developer event of this sort that I actually make it to.

It's that time of year again! Tell me what your biggest problems are with adopting Kotlin Multiplatform or building KMP apps in the replies. Is it something with Compose? Is it the build system? Something around iOS? I'm all ears.

Want to see KotlinConf 2027 from the inside? Join the volunteer team for a backstage pass (well, a volunteer badge). Meet fellow Kotlin fans, catch great talks, and help bring the conference to life. The call for volunteers is open! Apply here: https://kotl.in/8b9tdz

What is one new app, website, or software tool from the last 3 years that you picked up and really enjoy using, or get a lot of value from? What do you like about it? Looking for consumer apps, so no, it can't be a coding agent 😄

📢 Big news for AGP support in IntelliJ IDEA! The latest EAP includes support for AGP 9.3, and it also comes with a new experimental flag to enable opening projects with future AGP versions, so you can open/sync projects with 9.4 or even 9.5 alphas! Feedback very welcome.

Grab the EAP from JetBrains Toolbox or from www.jetbrains.com/id... You can then find the new setting by going to... Languages & Frameworks > Android (Experimental) > Enable opening projects that use future Android Gradle plugin versions

You'll also get a helpful error and link to enable the setting if you just try syncing a newer AGP version:

Good morning Berlin! Hope to meet lots and lots of people at next app dev con today 👋 You'll find me at my talk at noon, at a roundtable in the afternoon, and generally at the JetBrains booth!

Is it just me or does everyone take notes with titles like macOS Mac setup terminal commands cli init settings bash zsh brew ... for "SEO" purposes?

Trying to understand peoples workflows these days: What percentage of... * code do you write by hand? * time do you spend in an IDE? * time do you spend instructing an agent or reviewing its work?

Compose Multiplatform 1.12 is out! kotlinlang.org/docs/... * Improved performance on iOS * Automatic font fallback on the web (e.g. for emojis!) * MCP server for Compose Hot Reload * General goodies from Jetpack Compose 1.12, like new Grid or gradient APIs * ... and more!

Shout-out to whoever put this on the reddit website. It's great at making me get off of reddit when I accidentally go there. That's not even a joke, I genuinely appreciate this being built in.

Gradle convention plugins are such a catch-22. They're theoretically the proper way of organizing configuration to reuse it across modules. But they're different and more complicated than normal config, so I really don't want to see them in samples for beginners...

Having a 1 TB SSD means I can only try developing projects in one ecosystem at a time. There simply isn't enough storage to pull the dependencies for mobile things *and* Docker images for something backend-related at the same time...

Turns out that learning to create THING slowly, manually over time lets you gain experience with THING, and you can develop a fundamental understanding of what actually makes THING good. If the cost of creating THING drops to ~0, these skills and *taste* are what really matter.
